KEEPING your home cool during summer isn't always easy, especially as most homes in the UK don't have air conditioning.

And while electric fans and bowls of ice can help bring down the temperature, there are some changes you can make to your home that will make far more of an impact.

Sanaz Nouri, the founder and principal designer of Sanaz Design Inc. spoke to Fabulous to share some of her best tricks to keep ensure your home stays cool this summer.

She explained that the steps to prevent your home from overheating are similar to how you'd keep in warm in winter.

And Shanaz says the first easy change anyone can make is to their windows.

She explained: "For any windows getting a lot of sun, I recommend thermal drapes.

"This will minimize the heat during those hours when the sun is shining and If youre living in an older house, make sure youve sealed any gaps that may be letting outside air in."

The interiors expert explained that because thermal drapes are made from a thick fabric they're able to stop the sun heating up a room.

She added: "Its not 100 percent effective but is definitely a better alternative to sheer curtains or plastic blinds."

According to the pro, the flooring in your home can make a difference as well.

There's a reason most homes in hot climates don't have carpets - they're the worst at keep things cool.

Sanaz said: "The ultimate flooring hack for keeping your home cool is a stone, ceramic or porcelain!

"Carpet will be the least effective in keeping your home cool."

Homeowners, where possible, should reconsider the layout of their home to keep cool too.

Think about the rooms in your home that you spend the most time in and ask yourself if they get a lot of sunlight throughout they day.

If so, consider switching things around, if your dining room doesn't get much light and stays cool but you don't spend a lot of time in there, move a sofa in there so you've got somewhere cool to relax.

"It's all about window placement," Shanaz revealed, adding that "you will want to be strategically placing windows to reduce the amount of direct sunlight coming in.

"Windows being placed on opposite walls to create cross-ventilation will create a nice breeze in the home."

Not only that but rooms with higher ceilings "will help reduce the amount of hot air pooling in rooms."

When it comes to keeping the bedrooms in your house cool, breathable mattresses and bedding are vital, opt for thin linen sheets or even satin, which is a cheap alterative to silk but will prevent you sweating all the same.

Sanaz added: "If the temperature drops at night, you can open the windows to let the cool breeze in."

Plants are also a great thing to add to your home if you want to avoid overheating, not only do they look posh but according to the pro "they release water into the air creating a cooling effect."

Your outside space can affect how hot the inside of your house gets too, "a house that sits directly in sunlight all day will be monumentally hotter inside than a house that sits in shade," Sanaz explained.

"Even if your whole house cannot be shaded, strategically placing trees outside of windows to block the sunlight will make a huge difference."

Twenty-six years ago, TWA Flight 800 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. It was the fourth deadliest aircraft accident in the history of U.S. airlines after Pan Am Flight 1736 in Tenerife, American Airlines Flight 191 in Chicago, and American Airlines Flight 587 in Belle Harbor.

On July 17, 1996, 12 minutes after taking off from New Yorks John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Boeing 747-100 disappeared from radar. All 230 people onboard perished.

Subsequent investigations revealed that a fuel tank explosion was the cause of the crash.

Last year, a private memorial service for the families of those lost on the flight was held. The service took place that evening in Smith Point Park, a beachfront park overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on the east end of Fire Island along the central south shore of Long Island.

At precisely 8:31 p.m. local time on that fateful day, an explosion that was ultimately determined to have been caused by a spark from fuel gauge wiring, inside the center wing fuel tank of the 747, which in turn caused a huge explosion that split the plane in two about 15,000 feet over the Atlantic, some 8 miles (13 kilometers) south of the beaches that flank the East Moriches inlet.

The reconstructed Boeing 747 wreckage sat some 260 miles (419 kilometers) away at the National Transportation Safety Boards training center in Ashburn, Virginia for almost a quarter of a century. The agency, until last year, had been using the salvaged wreckage in accident investigation training courses and, with the ascent of most family members, decommissioned and destroyed the remains of the wreckage.

The Jumbo Jet had 212 passengers and 18 crew members on board at the time of the crash. The roster included 16 students and five chaperones from the Montoursville Area High School French Club in Pennsylvania; Jed Johnson, an interior designer who was Andy Warhols partner of 12 years; Rico Puhlmann, a German fashion photographer; and David Hogan, an American composer.

One passenger who was supposed to be on board, Eileen Rence of Appleton, Wisconsin, missed the flight by minutes thanks to weather delays in the Midwest. She did not immediately realize the significance of her late arrival until she telephoned a friend who then informed her of the news. I cant rejoice while others are feeling so terrible, she told the New York Times at the time, speaking from the Ramada Inn near JFK where relatives of the victims were gathering.

The passenger, just an hour earlier, had been waiting to board in the TWA Flight Center, the storied airlines Eero Saarinen-designed terminal at JFK, perhaps sitting in the airlines lounge, the Ambassador Club, or one of its three restaurants, the Constellation Club, the Lisbon Lounge, and the Paris Caf.

FBT Editorial Director Jonathan Spira remembers the night of the crash as if it were yesterday.

I was driving home and since it was the pre-Internet radio days was listening to WCBS Newsradio 88 when the news broke and the network preempted local programming. I pulled over to listen to the report and had a sinking feeling in my stomach.

I didnt know it at the time, but a friend and neighbor of mine as well as of my brother, the late Greg Spira, this magazines co-founder, was on the flight. Eric Holst and his wife were on their way to Paris for the wedding of his brother Troy, another friend.

The in-air disaster prompted the largest investigation of an aviation crash in U.S. history, and the findings led federal officials to require airlines to pump inert gas into empty fuel tanks, making them less likely to ignite.

The warehouse containing the reconstructed aircraft was closed to the public but families of the victims were allowed to visit over the years. Before the massive 747 was dismantled, the agency documented the reconstructionusing 3-D scanning.

The move comes as the lease on the warehouse nears its end and the destruction of the wreckage is in accordance with an agreement it made with survivors of the victims of the explosion, one of the deadliest plane crashes in U.S. history, albeit one that resulted in safer flying as a result of the investigation.

The investigation of the crash of TWA Flight 800 is a seminal moment in aviation safety history, said Sharon Bryson, the safety boards managing director, in a statement. From that investigation we issued safety recommendations that fundamentally changed the way aircraft are designed.

If you're in the process of redecorating your little one's room, how your choice of paint color affects their mood should be a big consideration. We usually think of paints as ways to decorate or lift a space, but while hues can inspire and soothe, they can also agitate or distract. And this is particularly true for children.

Kids are prone to being stimulated by their surroundings. Certain colors are known to induce energy and excitement, while others help them calm down. In fact, it isn't as much about the color as it is about its temperature or undertone. While most paint hues work in a kid's room, specific intensities and temperatures may not be ideal.

However, do keep in mind that every child is different; these generalizations dont apply to all.We asked interior designers for their advice, whether there's any colors to avoid, and how to get these shades right.

'Color psychology plays a major role in impacting the human mind,' say Hardesh and Monica Chawla, founders and interior designers, Essentia Environments (opens in new tab). 'Every color has its meaning and connection, that varies across many factors. In the field of design, the color wheel has a universal theory for each color, from mood to its impact.'

'While designing a kid's room, you have to keep in mind five basic factors sleep, play, layout, color, study, and work,' say Hardesh and Monica. 'This room should be filled with colors, but one has to choose the right shade so that the reflections formed in the room with light and color never blind the eye, or put any stress on it.'

Purple or bright purple tends to have red undertones, which means the hue has a high-energy effect, keeping you alert, and thereby making the room less restful. While the hue looks great as a decor option, in a little boy's or girl's bedroom, it can be the enemy sleepiness.

'Purple tends to have an undertone with shorter wavelengths that awaken the brain instead of relaxing it,' say Monica and Hardesh. 'While this might be the first choice for the bedroom, purple, made up of red and blue, has a fluctuating wavelength for the human eye to perceive. Plus, people end up choosing cooler hues as people do not know or understand about color psychology or the science behind it.'

If your heart is still set on this hue, choose a more muted tone, like soft lavender, because of its cool undertones. You could go for Lite Lavender by Sherwin-Williams (opens in new tab) or Benjamin Moore's Spring Lilac 1388 (opens in new tab), for example. Alternatively, make like OAD Interiors (opens in new tab), who created this clever scheme with a stripe of purple behind the bed. This keeps it out of sight and out of mind at bedtime, but makes for an energizing space the rest of the time.

Typically red is a color that evokes emotions of dominance, power, and prestige. But the shade and undertone of red are what matter the most. Phone box red or bright, orangy red can elicit aggression and frustration and can be a volatile kids' room paint color.

'While red is a fantastic color for kids' bedrooms, use it in moderation such as pieces of furniture painted in bright colors or accessories like cushions and posters, avoiding a full wall color in this tone' says Ann Marie Cousins, founder at AMC Design (opens in new tab).

'Red will do exactly the opposite of what you want a bedroom to do,' says Joshua Smith, founder and principal designer at Joshua Smith Interior Design (opens in new tab). 'It stimulates excessive brain activity and can often make kids feel agitated, and no one should ever go to bed angry.'

Red can do well as an accent tone on cushions, artwork or even on a stand-alone wardrobe. However if you're still looking to paint in this hue, choose terracotta/rust like Morocco red by Behr (opens in new tab), or Sundried Tomato by Benjamin Moore (opens in new tab)that are less jarring.

It's rather easy for parents to think of sugary, bubblegum colors for their kid's bedrooms or shared bedrooms, but a bright, florescent shade can be quite overwhelming, both for the eyes and the mind. 'I particularly advise against the Easter egg hues as they make the bedroom look like a pre-school,' says Jennifer Morris, interior designer, JMorris Design (opens in new tab). 'If you have to use these colors, choose their warmer tones.'

'Color is a mood enhancer,' says Kellie Burke, founder and principal designer of Kellie Burke Interiors (opens in new tab). 'Fluorescents like yellow or pink are energetic, stimulate the appetite, but tire the eye and can evoke anger and agitation, so lets keep that color out of the bedroom and settle for something more soothing.'

A few good paint tones to consider are Balsam by C2 Paint (opens in new tab) or Green 09 by Lick (opens in new tab).

Pink with brown or grey undertones can elicit tranquillity, and the same can work well in the bedroom. But when it comes to colors to avoid in a bedroom for kids, hot pink should be left for a space that creates more energy, like a playroom.

'Softer colors tend to have a more beneficial effect when it comes to relaxation and sleep, so if possible, avoid bright and overwhelming colors like hot pink in a child's bedroom,' says Ann Marie.

A good alternative to hot pink is one with a light undertone of grey. 'My favorite pink paint color is Farrow & Ball's Calamine (opens in new tab). It reads like a neutral, but is better,' shares designer Mary Patton. For a little pop of energy, hot pink has been added as an accent on the radiator - a fun detail that won't overwhelm the space.

Yellow is one of the most common colors for a gender-neutral kids' bedroom and is usually associated with feelings of happiness. Many psychological studies point to this color as being bright and cheery, ideal for motivation. In some cases, it is believed that the softer or deeper tones of yellow can aid in concentration. Plus, there are many other colors that go with yellow.

However, beware of using an acidic, or cool yellow in large doses it may create feelings of agitation and even anger. 'Its all about balance, designing a space that feels playful and fun to play in, but also calm enough to sleep,' says interior designer Emma Shone-Saunders of Design & That (opens in new tab). 'Getting the color right key - yellow is a bright and cheerful colour, but a soft yellow can also very soothing.'

Try layering in shades of cream or white for some softness and contrast. Plus, add soft, cuddly textiles in the room for comfort.A good alternative for acidic yellow is a dusty yellow like Farrow & Ball's Hay (opens in new tab) or muted gold like Benjamin Moore's Inner Glow (opens in new tab).

Before you look at a shade card and start selecting paint colors for the kid's bedroom, remember to keep temperatures and undertones in mind. 'The temperatures or undertones to avoid are more linked to the orientation of the room rather than the room use itself,' says Ann Marie. 'It feels like an obvious thing to focus on, but it is the one thing you cant change to allow for warmer colors in north-facing rooms and keep the light and airy color schemes to south-facing rooms.'

'Whichever way it faces, the room needs to have some calm to it, so even when designing for small children who respond well to bright colors, keeping a calm and soothing base is important, and keeping vibrant colors to accents is the best way to ensure that small people arent too energetic at bedtime,' says Ann Marie.

When it comes to picking tones for a kid's room or even a teenager's room, it's not entirely a bad idea to go for perceived 'grown-up colors' as they give the room longevity and help you avoid redecorating through the growing years. 'Smart, deep greens or moody, smoky blues such as De Nimes (opens in new tab) are a great choice,' says Patrick O'Donnell, Farrow and Ball (opens in new tab)'s brand ambassador.

'Warm neutrals, those with a little red or yellow through them, allow to effortlessly layer all other fun elements into space, from brightly colored linen to pops of color on a painted bed,' says Patrick. 'Archive (opens in new tab)is a warm stone shade that will soften a room, even if starved of much natural light.'

Boca Raton resident Joe Pooch Pucciarelli knew hed be safe this week after becoming the backstage boss last week on the Season 24 premiere of the CBS reality show Big Brother.

What he couldnt prepare for was a houseguest leaving the game unexpectedly, which is what happened to 22-year-old interior designer Paloma Agular.

Big Brother has two elements: three televised episodes a week and the 24/7 live feeds where viewers can keep track of the houseguests online. However the feeds were down for an extended period late Wednesday and all day before Thursdays episode, leading to speculation something out of the ordinary happened.

Thursdays episode showed clips of Paloma experiencing anxiety and not getting sleep. She decided to leave the game for personal reasons, and the houseguests found out via a note. Her decision led to an emotional response from the houseguests who were worried about her health. It also threw a weeks worth of gameplay into limbo.

The objective of Big Brother is to be the last houseguest remaining, which results in a $750,000 prize. Houseguests are cut off from the outside world, followed by cameras and vie for power to be the Head of Household and nominate players they would like to see eliminated. A weekly vote is conducted to evict one of the nominated houseguests.

Further complicating matters was that Paloma was involved in the backstage twist, which was not fully explained until Thursday night by host Julie Chen Moonves. As the backstage boss, Pooch chose Paloma, Alyssa Snider, a 24-year old marketing rep, and Brittany Hoopes, a 32-year-old hypnotherapist, to join him backstage.

It was explained earlier that no one backstage could be nominated for eviction, play in the Power of Veto competition, be chosen as a replacement nominee if the veto was used or vote in the first eviction. But unlike Pooch, Paloma, Alyssa and Brittany were not fully safe.

How those three werent safe was still unknown as of Thursday. Chen Moonves announced that the original plan was to have one of the two nominated houseguests battle one of the players that was backstage, and the loser of the battle would be the first one evicted. However, since Paloma left, that plan was scrapped; no one else went home, and the week reset.

Sundays episode showed that Pooch was cognizant he selected all girls to go backstage as he was talking to Monte Taylor, Kyle Capener and Joseph Abdin soon after all the houseguests entered the house for the first time. Pooch was banking on avoiding repercussions since his selections were based on who did poorly in the first competition.

Im playing the game like Im coaching, Im keeping it fair, Pooch said in one of the shows diary room sessions, when contestants can speak in private to the viewers.

It didnt seem like Pooch received direct backlash for his backstage picks, but selecting three women, along with the self-proclaimed bros quickly bonding, may have indirectly led to the formation of a womens alliance of six known as the girls girls.

Thursdays episode showed Pooch briefly getting into an alliance with Alyssa, Paloma, Monte, Kyle and Ameerah Jones, but Pooch was unknowingly replaced in the alliance by Michael Bruner, a 28-year-old attorney.

I think Pooch long term might rub people the wrong way, Kyle told Paloma and Monte, and opted for Michael to join their alliance because, according to them, he keeps a lower profile.

Before Palomas surprise exit, a normal week of Big Brother played out. Head of Household Daniel Durstson, a 35-year-old Elvis impersonator, nominated Michael and Terrance Higgins, a 48-year-old city bus operator, for eviction.

Micahel won the Power of Veto competition on Wednesdays episode. He used that power to take himself off the block and Daniel replaced him with Taylor Hale, a 27-year-old personal stylist.

Taylor immediately rubbed some of the houseguests the wrong way by saying she was a pageant queen and spending more time with the guys in the house than the girls. She was likely the houses target to be voted out, but will now advance at least another week.

After Paloma Aguilars surprise exit fromBig Brother 24, the Houseguests competed for the Head of Household. Who is the new HOH, and who did they nominate for eviction?

California-based interior designer Paloma Aguilar quitBig Brother 24before the first elimination. As a result, no one was voted out of the house.

Following the canceled eviction and Backstage twist, the players faced off in the seasons second Head of Household competition. Jasmine Davis became the HOH for Week 2, even after she appeared to injure her ankle during the first part.

Shortly after her victory, she named Taylor Hale as a potential nominee due to how well she did in the competition. Also wanting Taylor out still, Joe Pooch Pucciarelli expressed his desire to get nominated as a pawn, believing he had the votes.

When allies Michael Bruner, Alyssa Snider, and Ameerah Jones thought about his offer more, they realized they could flip on him, noting many Houseguests have said they want him out of the game.

After Pooch volunteered to become a pawn to Jasmine, she talked with Ameerah, who pointed out they had the votes to turn on him and should take the opportunity.

After warming Pooch up to the idea that he wouldnt sit next to Brittany Hoopes as he wanted, the assistant football coach suggests she nominate outgoing Head of Household Daniel Durston because they were the only two safe last week.

Even though Jasmine admitted she was worried about nominating Taylor due to her ability to play in the Power of Veto, the HOH seems willing to target Pooch.

Ameerah then told Nicole Layog about the plan, adding that they dont perceive Taylor as a threat, and Nicole shared the information with her number one ally, Daniel. Although hes working closely with Pooch in an all-guys alliance, the Elvis Pressley tribute artist admitted he preferred to work with the girls.

Jasmine continued to have conversations with the other Houseguests before the Nomination Ceremony. Michael confirmed that he would play in the Veto for her if she picked him, and Alyssa admitted she preferred a bigger target, Pooch leaving this week over Taylor.

During her talk with Kyle, he revealed he wouldnt care if the Florida native got nominated, and Terrance confirmed that he would vote to evict Pooch. He also pointed out that they have the numbers to vote Taylor out of the house whenever but its possible they wont have another opportunity to target Pooch.

She shared the logic with Monte Taylor during their talk, which seems to want Pooch out as well, referring to him as a wildcard who spreads information. Jasmine told Taylor that she would nominate her but assured Pooch is her target.

Following their conversation, the HOHnominated Taylor and Poochand said she would put up Brittany post-Veto if one of her nominations were removed. According to Ameerah, only Pooch, Joseph Abdin, and Matt Turner are unaware of their plan to target the assistant football coach.Big Brother 24airs Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays on CBS.

But the reason that galley kitchen layouts work is that they are ergonomically sound it's easy to place everything so it is to hand.

I love a classic galley kitchen, enthuses Seattle-based designer Heidi Caillier (opens in new tab). They just feel so intimate and special, and there is something very appealing about them practically. They force you to be thoughtful in how you lay out every inch, and I also like the mentality of using ALL of your kitchen versus just that one corner between the range and the sink.

To maximize galley kitchens you simply need smart ideas. A good kitchen designer will be able to come up with solutions for awkwardly-shaped spaces but if you feel you want to explore the rooms potential further, and are perhaps considering structural work, it is worth consulting an interior designer or architect.

Similarly to a chef's kitchen, galleys follow a similar linear plan, with lines of ranges or hobs divided into specific stations for the preparation of different types of dishes. Where there is room for a parallel run of units a double galley you can introduce the classic work triangle, arranging the key task zones of fridge, cooker and sink in this pattern to cut down on the footwork between them.

L-shaped kitchen ideas work beautifully whether a space is a small, medium or large. L-shaped layouts work with both contemporary and traditional cabinetry, and the form is flexible enough to adapt to structural needs, such as sloping ceilings or large windows.

If you're wondering what you can do with an L-shaped kitchen, it's important to keep practicality in mind as with all kitchen layout designs. It's also vital to think about your day-to-day life in the space, as this will help you arrange an L-shaped kitchen.

According to Marco Rossi, head of product at Magnet: 'Each main working station should be within a couple of metres of one another where the fridge, sink and cooker make up a working triangle.'

Sofia Bune Strandh, managing director of Sola Kitchens, agrees. 'L-shaped kitchens make excellent use of space. They are easy to work in since the work triangle can be easily established.'

U-shaped kitchen ideas are efficient three-sided designs that max out kitchen storage possibilities with everything close to hand. If space is tight, these horseshoe-shaped layouts offer plenty of kitchen countertop space, cabinets and drawers above and below for an ultra-streamlined look.

U-shaped kitchens dont have to be restricted to three walls either and the layout can be adapted if theres space for an island unit or breakfast bar at one end of a run of units.

Modern designs include the U-shape plus island combination, which sees an island bridging the middle of a large U-shape, as well as standalone U-shape islands that sit in the middle of an open-plan room.

'As its name suggests, a U-shaped kitchen features cabinetry on three adjoining walls to create a U-shape,' says Charlie Smallbone, founder of Ledbury Studio (opens in new tab). 'This layout is very flexible and works no matter the size of your space.'

Move over, modern farmhouse decor; theres a new design aesthetic in town. Blending Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian hygge, Japandi is the latest trend gaining traction in the interior design world, bringing with it a cozy but simplistic look thats popping up in homes all over the worldand piquing the interest of design lovers like us. To get to the bottom of what exactly Japandi is and how we can channel the serene style in our own homes we talked with interior designer Shanty Wijaya, founder of Allprace, a boutique home design, build and landscape firm that recently completed an incredible Los Angeles home flip that epitomizes Japandi style. Dubbed Project Japandi, the home is rife in Japanese and Scandinavian influences, from a neutral color palette and an emphasis on natural materials (think wood, stone, living finish metal and leather), indoor/outdoor living and greenery throughout.

Overseeing the entire stunning renovation, Wijaya says, Japandi is the East meets West design movement that blends Japanese artistic elements and wabi-sabi philosophy with Scandinavian comfort and warmth. Both the Japanese and Scandinavian design aesthetics are focused on simplicity, natural elements, comfort and sustainability. Japandi is not purely an aesthetic but also a way of life. Its about recognizing, accepting and embracing the imperfectness of life and opting for simplicity-authenticity as a conscious choice.

While were more familiar with the Scandi hygge principles creating rustic, cozy, warm spaces that foster togetherness Wijaya brought us up to speed on Zen Buddhisms key elements of the wabi-sabi aesthetic, which is rooted in appreciating the imperfection of things. Focusing on principles like kanso (simplicity), fukinsei (asymmetry or irregularity), shibumi (beauty in the understated) and seijaku (tranquility), wabi-sabi can be achieved in a slew of ways, according to Wijaya.

Opt for reclaimed pieces or something that is original or handmade, she says. Use materials that can naturally patina in time, like wood, natural stones and living finish metals. To create depth, use different stained colored woods. Opt for simple, low-profile furnishings, and bring nature in by using potted and hanging plants and greenery inside the house.

And in terms of overall decor, Wijaya recommends infusing bright spaces with clean lines and muted color palettes, creating uncluttered spaces and adding cozy blankets and candles to gathering areas like the living room. Appropriate is not usually a sexy word. Unless youre talking about restoring a 120-year-old SoHo loft with 11-foot ceilings and original cast-iron columns for a 28-year-old New Yorker, that is. Youre taking an interesting old thing and youre making it appropriate for today, explains Andrew Oyen, principal at Ferguson & Shamamian Architects, who teamed up with Elizabeth Lawrence, partner at Bunny Williams Interior Design, to give the disheveled space back its original swagger for a client whose lifestyle included both studying for her masters and entertaining lots of friends.

Previously used as a studio by the famous architect and sculptor Maya Lin (designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.) and as a manufacturing facility before that, the 2,800-square-foot unit retained few of the coveted industrial features common among lofts in the neighborhood, save for a pair of floor-to-ceiling cast-iron columns. It became about, How can we work with what we have? recalls Oyen. The answer: Restore the original wood windows and floors, remove a layer of acoustic tile from the ceiling beams and ducts, hang a rattan swing , replace the 1970s door with a more period-appropriate versionand then give every exposed feature a fresh coat of white paint.

But at the behest of the client, Emma Lasry, now a research analyst at an art advisory firm, the loft couldnt look too old-timey: I wanted my own space to feel comfy and cloudlike, but with tons of fabrics, patterns, and colors, and [Oyen and Lawrence] instantly got it. After all, the two prestigious firms were familiar enough with her style, having already worked together to renovate several (much larger) homes for her parents on the Upper West Side and in Connecticut.

Following Lasrys cues, Lawrence got to work on the palette (bright pinks and blues) and layout (adding a huge kitchen island and plenty of space for entertaining). Emma knew she wanted traditional pieces mixed with modern, so we took that feedback and ran with it, Lawrence says. Shes a sophisticated young ladyshe could pinpoint pretty quickly what she wanted.

The result is a bright, colorful apartment that feels utterly unexpectedboth for the historical address and for the firms, known as they are for more opulent projects, that came together to create it. Weve been called chameleons before, says Oyen of the team. Its a huge compliment!

You want an apartment like this to be revealed to you, says Oyen, who relocated the front entrance so that the first thing visitors see is the dramatic cast-iron columns. (Doing so also created space for a sunlit open kitchen at the front of the unit.) An impassioned search for the perfect door led them to Demolition Depot in Harlem, where they found a heavy metal door from another old warehouse in downtown Manhattan. Retrofitted with an antique door closer and new hardware, its one of the few antique pieces we brought to the project, says Oyen. It really makes the space.

For architect Andrew Oyen and decorator Elizabeth Lawrence, the biggest challenge in this New York loft was configuring the massive open floor plan as a comfy entertaining mecca.
