Kitchen remodel: What it really costs, plus three ways to save big - August 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

When I talk about my kitchen remodel, which I've done endlessly this year, people confess they want a new kitchen, too, and ask how much mine cost.

    The answer: about $22,000.

That's not even close to the $54,394 listed by Remodeling.com's 2014 Cost vs. Value report for a midrange kitchen remodel in Denver. An upscale kitchen? Figure $109,127.

The newly renovated kitchen of freelance writer Lisa Greim on Wednesday, August 20, 2014. Greim has been in her home for 18 years and just did a two-month-long renovation. (Cyrus McCrimmon, The Denver Post)

My 18-by-9-foot kitchen, in a 35-year-old suburban house, required no major demolition or structural work. It features flat-pack Ikea cabinets that I assembled, closeout appliances, Formica countertops and laminate flooring.

And it's so pretty, so functional and so much better than what it replaced that I could sit right down in the middle of the fake acacia floor and weep.

Budget is the elephant in the remodel room, according to Kelly Morrisseau, a California master kitchen designer and author of "Kelly's Kitchen Sync" (Springline Media, 2011), a guide to the nuts and bolts of remodeling, and an e-book, "Kelly's Kitchen Savvy: Solutions for Partial Kitchen Remodels."

What drives designers nuts, she says, are clients who make their wish lists with no idea of how much things cost and then complain that her plan is too expensive.

There's no shame in scaled-back designs or a modest budget, Morrisseau says. "None of us will think badly because it wasn't what you wanted to spend; we all have the same choices to make ourselves. Our goal is to find something you like."

Design magazines and renovation TV shows don't help aspiring remodelers get a grip on reality, either.

Research Reveals Mechanism Behind Cell Protein Remodeling - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Newswise New Brunswick, N.J., August 28, 2014 The remodeling of a kitchen or bathroom changes the appearance of the room and improves its functionality. As investigators at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Rutgers and Princeton Universities have demonstrated, a similar concept comes into play in remodeling proteins found within a family of cancers that does not respond well to cancer-treating drugs -- cancers driven by what is known as activated Ras.

According to the National Cancer Institute, more than a third of all human cancers are driven by mutations in the Ras family of genes. When Ras is activated, it promotes tumor growth but also activates autophagy which helps to sustain that growth. These cancers remodel proteins using the cellular self-cannibalization process known as autophagy to capture and degrade intracellular proteins and protein-containing organelles. Since Ras-driven cancers often rely on autophagy for growth and survival, this raised the question: Is proteome remodeling by autophagy important, and if so, by what mechanism?

This question was answered in research published in the current online edition of Molecular Cell (doi: 10.1016/j.molcel.2014.07.019), by senior author Eileen White, PhD, associate director for basic science at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, and colleagues. They compared the global proteome (all of the expressed proteins) of Ras-driven cancer cells where autophagy was present to those where autophagy was deficient.

In this latest study researchers found that autophagy affects a majority of the proteins in Ras-driven cancers, yet the process is highly selective as to which proteins are targeted. For instance, investigators found that autophagy eliminates proteins involved in non-essential pathways or those deemed toxic under stressful conditions. Meanwhile, autophagy-resistant proteins involved in pathways needed for stress survival and autophagy maintenance were spared. The authors say these sets of proteins can serve as biomarkers for monitoring autophagy in the clinical setting. The study also revealed that defects in the autophagy process caused accumulation of certain proteins that prompted activation of an immune response in cancer cells and led to cell death.

This remodeling process of the cell proteome by autophagy is an important immune-suppressive survival mechanism for Ras-driven cancers, and inhibiting autophagy can provide a means to target these aggressive cancers, notes White, who is also a distinguished professor of molecular biology and biochemistry at Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences.

Along with White, other authors on the study are: Robin Mathew and Sinan Khor, both Cancer Institute and Rutgers University; Sean Hackett, Princeton University; Joshua D. Rabinowitz, Princeton University and Cancer Institute; and David H. Perlman, Princeton University.

The work was supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health (R37 CA53370 and R01 CA130893, White; RC1 CA147961 and R01 CA163591, White, Rabinowitz), and the Department of Energy (DE-AC05-06OR23100, Hackett).

How to Keep Your White Kitchen White - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Becky Dietrich, Houzz Contributor

White kitchens bring a clean, light feel to any home, but many homeowners express concern about how to keep those cabinets looking pristine. In reality, the best way to maintain that sparkle is to never use your kitchen, but if you insist on actually cooking, you are likely to encounter yellowing cabinets, accumulations of grease, and stained and marred sinks and countertops. What fun.

The truth is, you dont need to be nuts to own an all-white kitchen. Just a little diligent, and armed with the tips below.

Browse thousands of beautiful kitchen designs on Houzz

Why do those sparkling white cabinets start to yellow? The first culprit is exposure to direct sunlight, which tends to jaundice or fade painted wood (and laminated surfaces). You should consider draperies, blinds or window film to shield your cabinets from direct sunlight.

The second culprit is actually using your cooktop. As soon as you start cooking, those mouthwatering aromas rise into the air in the form of microscopic food or grease particles, and since they have to land somewhere, why not on your white cabinets? The result? Cabinets that turn yellow.

To prevent this, you cant let grease accumulate on your cabinets. As soon as you begin boiling, broiling or deep-frying, turn on the exhaust fan or range hood to filter out at least some of those minuscule bits before they reach the surrounding surfaces.

Writer Lorna Hordos suggests removing a yellow tinge this way: Wash your cupboards with a fizzy mixture of 1 cup vinegar, 2 cups warm water and 1 tablespoon baking soda. To keep cabinets white, give them a monthly bath with a solution of warm water and a grease-busting dish soap.

How to keep the rest of your white spaces looking great

Then there is the inevitable muck and grime that accumulate from oil and grease splatters. The folks at Kemper Distinctive Cabinetry remind you to not use abrasive cleansers or scouring pads on painted cabinets, as they can scratch or dull the finish. A soft cotton cloth dampened with warm water is usually sufficient.

Contemporary Kitchen Design Townhouse Remodel Honored with Chrysalis Team Award - August 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The challenge: transform a tiny townhouse kitchen into a contemporary and functional family headquarters. The result: a 2014 Regional Chrysalis Team Award for team leader Chris Donatelli, founder and president of Donatelli Builders in Wayne, Gail Drury, CMKBD and president of Drury Design in Glen Ellyn and Vicki Ovitt, an interior designer based in Wheaton.

Were always honored to partner with leaders like Donatelli Builders and Vicki Ovitt. We admire their work and enjoy creating client projects as a team. Congrats go out to Chris, Vicki, and the homeowners on the Chrysalis award, said Gail Drury.

Chris Donatelli said, For this kitchen, I felt that Gail Drury of Drury Design would be a great fit. Gail went right to work by carefully reviewing the wish list and walking the clients through a 10-page questionnaire to fine-tune their familys needs. She then developed four preliminary floor plans with completely different ideas in each. After some brainstorming with the team, a combination of the four plans was chosen, incorporating different elements that were most important to the owners.

The purpose of the remodel was to transform a very small kitchen into the functional hub of a 2,500-square-foot townhouse. Although the space was sizable, like many townhouse units, the original builders plans did not capitalize on the townhouses full potential. Both avid cooks, the couple wanted to create a fully functional space for their young, active family and their guests.

To maximize the townhouses livability and fulfill the clients wish list, design plans called for improving the kitchen design layout, upgrading appliances including a Wolf professional six burner range with dual fuel oven, and creating a distinctive eating area with a built-in granite table.

By relocating the laundry area to another level of the townhouse, removing the wall between the spaces, and expanding the range wall by removing a broom closet, additional space was created for the kitchen. Also added was a new mudroom area with plenty of storage and a message center. Contemporary cabinetry and other aesthetics were included to update the look to create a modern European feel with coordinated finishes and colors including glass tiles.

Los Angeles Kitchen and Bathroom Remodeling Company, Professional Builders, is Now Offering Complimentary Estimates to … - August 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 27, 2014

Los Angeles kitchen remodeling company, Professional Builders, is now offering complimentary estimates in an effort to help homeowners save money on home remodeling costs. Remodeling the kitchen or bathroom can be difficult to complete without the help of a hired professional service provider. However, finding the right contractor to make renovations can be a time-consuming, not to mention expensive, experience. Professional Builders offers various services, including:

Homeowners may just assume that most companies will provide a complimentary estimates or cheap kitchen remodeling in Los Angeles. This is not the case. Most home improvement contractors will charge a fee to come to the home and make an estimate for renovations and remodeling services. If the homeowner chooses that service provider, the contractor will often take the cost of the estimate and apply this amount to work completed so that the estimate ends up at no charge. However, if the homeowner does not choose that specific company, that money remains with the contractor to cover their time and effort in providing the estimate.

While it is reasonable to pay contractors for their time, if a homeowner wishes to receive more than one estimate on a home improvement project, the costs can quickly add up. Since most homeowners will decide on one contractor to complete their remodeling project, money spent on estimates from other contractors is lost.

Homeowners can save money by getting a complimentary in-home estimate from Professional Builders, experts in kitchen and bathroom remodel in Los Angeles. Through their quality of work in every project, this company has established itself as one of the most respected companies in the area. As the website states, "We pride ourselves on making sure our clients are happy with every job we do." By offering complimentary estimates to potential customers, Professional Builders has the chance to make even more customers happy by saving money.

Professional Builders, experts in bathroom and small kitchen remodeling in Orange County and Los Angeles, is accredited with the Better Business Bureau, so customers can be assured that they will receive the agreed-upon services in a timely manner. The company strives to give quality results while staying within the allotted budget for beautiful results that last.
