Land clearing activities in Selangor stripping away precious greenery - February 28, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

A DRIVE to Kajang or Rawang has become an upsetting experience, not because of the road conditions or traffic congestion, but the brown patches that have replaced most of the once-green hills there.

Upon entering the Cheras-Kajang Highway, motorists will be able to see land clearing activities taking place on the undulating hills in the distance. Ironically, this is the direction city folk take when heading to places such as Hulu Langat, Semenyih and Broga for some fresh air.

Similarly, when motorists drive along the North-South Expressway towards the supposedly greener areas on the fringes of the state such as Serendah and Bukit Beruntung, they will be greeted by row after row of land cleared for quarry, plantation or housing development.

I am sad about what is happening around here, said Cheras resident Yong Boo Ying.

Every now and then, I see the hills being cut for housing development or another large stretch being stripped bare of its greenery. This has been happening at an alarming rate over the past few years, she added.

Selayang MCA Youth chief Lee Li Yew said he was doubtful that the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) was doing its part to monitor the land clearing along the North-South Expressway.

Although these are private land, the clearing has to be watched closely. I noticed that the land has been cleared but no ground work has been done after that. I suspect they are chopping down the trees without approval, he said.

It may take detailed surveys to prove the land clearing activities are affecting the delicate balance of the eco-system but the flooding in the Klang Valley, that is occurring more frequently, is certainly a warning sign.

On the other hand, looking at existing laws and plans, there is no lack of clauses in place to ensure the equilibrium between development and the environment.

In Selangor, there are the Selangor Structure Plan 2020 as well as the development plans for various localities, further supported by the need for sustainability assessment during the planning process and Local Agenda 21 that calls for public consultation.

Indiscriminate land clearing can affect eco-tourism, says Dr Ng - February 16, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Posted on February 16, 2013, Saturday

KOTA BAHARU: Indiscriminate logging and land clearing activities, claimed to be happening in Kelantan, can be destructive to the environment and will adversely affect the states eco-tourism industry.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the states natural beauty and the environment should be preserved as they were the main factors that attracted foreigners to Malaysia.

The Tourism Ministry cares for the environment and protect it for tourism, she told reporters at the state-level Chinese New Year gathering here yesterday.

She said this in response to a claim by a non-governmental organisation, called Orang Muda Berpadu Anti-Korupsi (Ombak), on indiscriminate logging activities in Kelantan.

According to Ombak president, Wan Khairul Ihsan Wan Muhammad, the areas worst affected were in Lojing, Gua Musang and Dabong in Kuala Krai.

Dr Ng said the ministry was concern with Kelantan because of its potential to be a popular tourist destination.

However, she said, the state government would also have to play its role by providing the necessary infrastructure and to maintain the cleanliness and beauty of the state.

In another development, Dr Ng, who is also Kelantan MCA chairman, said there was increasing support for Barisan Nasional by the Chinese community in Kelantan. Bernama

    20. 'Rampant land clearing in Kelantan will affect tourism' - February 16, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Saturday February 16, 2013

KOTA BARU: Rampant land clearing and serious environmental degradation in the state's forest reserves would affect Kelantan's image as an eco-tourism destination, said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

She said that clearing of the state's forests without an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) would affect the ministry's promotion of the state.

Tourism Malaysia's motto is to protect, manage and preserve the environment and Kelantan has the all the ingredients to promote eco-tourism. Publicity on the wanton land clearing without any EIA studies would certainly affect the ministry's efforts to promote eco-tourism in the state, Dr Ng said after attending the state-level Chinese New Year celebrations here yesterday.

She was commenting on media reports that the Kelantan PAS-led government had cleared thousands of hectares of forest land in the Gua Musang and Kuala Krai districts which stretched to the state's borders with Perak and Pahang.

The land clearing has also caused hardship to the orang asli as rivers have been polluted.

Scores of orang asli living in settlements in Gua Musang have also been displaced and their income from forest produce has been affected after the state government allegedly alienated 200,000ha of land for the Ladang Rakyat scheme to non-bumiputra companies.

Dr Ng, who is also Kelantan MCA chief, said that the state government should protect the interest of all its residents.

'Don't blame land clearing' - February 2, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Its district officer, Datuk Ahmad Daud, said at present, the farmers were carrying out their activities without proper control, which led to pollution of a river in the area.

"They have no control. They just dump fertiliser and pesticide wastes on the ground. When it rains, the wastes will flow into the nearby river, causing pollution," he said when met at his office yesterday.

Ahmad was commenting on claims by some farmers that land clearing activities by a farmer had caused pollution to a water-catchment pond in the area.

He said the farmers would be called in groups by the committee soon.

He also said his office was monitoring the land clearing activities.

Ahmad said the farmer concerned had not violated any of the conditions set by his office.

"The other farmers have requested the Land and District Office to issue a stop-work order on the land clearing activities.

"But this is unfair as the operator, who is conducting the land clearing, has not done anything which is against the regulations.

"However, I have given my contact number to the farmers. They can call me if the operator breaks any regulation and necessary action will be taken."

Mysterious land clearing underway in Detroit; Bing's office tight-lipped - February 2, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

DETROIT A mysterious 6-block land clearing project is underway on Detroit's east side, but no one is admitting why.

Since Wednesday, heavy machinery has rumbled through the mostly forgotten lots tearing down the few remaining time- and fire-ravaged homes.

Pickups blocked Pierce between St. Aubin and Dubois Friday afternoon while a bulldozer dumped boards and innards from on razed home into a semi-trailer dumpster.

There are at least three occupied homes in the clearing area to the south of Mack, which encompasses plots from Scott south to Watson and St. Aubin east to Chene.

One homeowner said he has no idea what they are up to. No one will say.

One employee in a truck Friday laughed when he was asked what the crews were doing out there and said he couldn't say.

A black Chevy Tahoe with tinted windows and at least two passengers seemed to be overseeing the project. It was present most of Friday, parking for several minutes then moving to another location but never straying far from the area.

Detroit owns some of the involved properties, according to the Detroit News, but officials are mum on what the intent of the work is.

"I don't have any information to share with you," is the response Mayor Dave Bing spokesman Anthony Neely gave MLive Detroit.

He declined to say why the information can't be shared with the public.
