WE note with alarm and regret that there is rampant logging and land clearing inside Templer Park, Selangor.
We appeal to the authorities to issue an immediate stop-work order and to cancel all developments in areas that have been zoned for conservation.
The National Conservation Strategy and the Selangor State Conservation Strategy both note that Templer Park should be protected because the area is rich in wildlife, including birds, reptiles and serow (goat-antelopes).
Studies by MNS have confirmed that there is still a population of serow living in the vicinity.
On Sept 8, 1954, the Sultan of Selangor, the late Sultan Hishamuddin Alam Shah declared that Templer Park was dedicated by Selangor to serve as a refuge and a sanctuary for wildlife and a meeting-place for all who love and respect the beauty of nature.
The following year the Govern-ment gazetted the area as a Botanical Garden and Public Park under the land enactment (Notification 104-1955).
We recognise that the boundaries of the park have since been changed several times, with many parcels being given to private ownership, including two golf courses and several exclusive bungalows.
Now we are alarmed to see that there has been further logging, slope cutting and highway development through the park.
The current developments include more than 30ha of forest being cut for the Rawang Bypass highway and about 20ha of forest being cleared for housing development (including some steep slopes).
These developments are completely at odds with the Governments pledge to hold a moratorium on logging inside forest reserves and the promise to consult the public before any development takes place in green areas.

A MISCOMMUNICATION between consultants which resulted in illegal land clearing has cost a Tamworth property development company $184,000 in restitution imposed by a federal government department.
Tamworths Marloelle Pty Ltd agreed to enter into an enforceable undertaking with the Federal government at the end of last month for illegal land clearing of a 4.5-hectare site over a three-year period at Windmill Hill Estate.
Two of Marloelles partners, Tamworths Mark and Loanna Single, own and operate one of the citys biggest and most prominent construction companies, Single Builders.
It is understood Single Builders had been engaged by Marloelle to build at the estate, but it had not been involved in the clearing process.
The clearing occurred between November 2008 and July 2011 at the residential estate near Moore Creek.
Marloelle was found to have wrongfully cleared 4.5 hectares of land that was home to an ecological community known as white box, yellow box and Blakelys red gum woodland and derived native grasslands.
The white box woodland is the same ecological land that North West environment groups say is under threat from coalmining expansion in the Gunnedah Basin.
The woodland is present in four Australian states and territories but less than 5 per cent is considered good quality.
A Marloelle Pty Ltd spokesman yesterday said the issues with clearing grasses from the small section of the Windmill Hill Estate arose out of a miscommunication between consultants engaged by the company.

Another tragic day in Tweed Shire NSW, where coastal land is decimated by developers to make way for totally devegetated blocks for people to build on and landscape. WHy does land need to be deforested for development? I remember in Sydney councils trees had to be left and land cleared only where necessary, the trees not affected could "live on" keeping some of the native plant life in tact, Not here! Shame - when do these environmental consequences catch up on these scorched earth practicers? Like war criminals are hunted down and punished, surely councils and environmental legislators who damage the environment for future generations can be held responsible for their actions - crimes against the environment!
