BOSTON Another winter storm inflicted fresh misery on the Northeast on Monday, causing several deaths and accidents and the cancellation of flights, classes and major court cases a day after it dumped up to a foot-and-a-half of snow on the Chicago area and blanketed much of the Plains and Midwest.

Here's how the storm is playing out:

In two of several weather-related deaths, a truck driver and a 62-year-old woman were killed in separate traffic accidents on snowy roads in Nebraska while in Wisconsin, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office said a 64-year-old man with a history of cardiac problems was found dead Sunday in his garage after shoveling snow.

The snowstorm, which brought 17.5 inches of snow to O'Hare International Airport by early Monday, was expected to deepen off the southern New England coast, bringing accumulations of 9 to 16 inches to Boston and nearly as much to Hartford, Connecticut, Providence, Rhode Island, southern New Hampshire and Vermont places still digging out from up to 3 feet dumped by last week's blizzard.

"For New Englanders, we're used to this during the winter," said Matt Doody of the National Weather Service. But he cautioned that both the morning and evening commutes would be messy.

Snowfall totals in New York state were to vary from 6 to 10 inches in Buffalo and Binghamton and 8 to 14 inches in Albany. A winter storm warning is out for more than 20 counties, with up to 16 inches forecast for the eastern Catskill Mountains, and northern and central Taconics.

Many Long Island schools delayed opening or closed due to a forecast of snow and freezing rain. The storm was expected to dump between 3 to 5 inches of snow north of the Long Island Expressway and slightly less to the south.

The Philadelphia area received about an inch of snow before the precipitation changed to rain. Forecasters expected 3 to 5 inches to fall in the Lehigh Valley, and 5 to 11 inches in northern Pennsylvania.

As co-founder Wills Mahoney explains, it used to be that you would have to call a company and then pay price-gouging rates if you wanted snow removed during a blizzard, and that was if the company answered your call. Plowz and Mowz does the dirty work for you, setting you up with an accredited company and getting the job done fast.

This simple concept is starting to pay off for the company entering its third year.

It was a good week for Plowz and Mowz. As the Northeast blizzard dumped two feet of snow on Boston, Mahoney and Co. saw record use of their app, coordinating plows of over 2,000 driveways in a 24-hour period, and helping one snowplow provider walk away with over $10,000 extra in cash, according to Mahoney.

Its an antiquated industry, Mahoney said of the plow business. Were getting these companies customers theyve never seen before, and really drumming up business for these guys.

Investors are taking notice, pouring money into on-demand anything, from doctor-finding apps, to handyman-sourcing apps.

Plowing driveways and mowing lawns may not be the sexiest service on the on-demand spectrum, but its part of a new wave Mahoney is hoping to ride. Mahoneys company currently includes 30 cities, from Miami to Anchorage, and partners with over 1,300 local companies. The most profitable markets have been Minneapolis, Cleveland, and Boston.

LINCOLN Grimacing and taking deep breaths, Dave Shemek struggles just to stand.

His muscles are weak.

Hold it. Hold it. Look. Keep your eyes open, Colleen Sankey says, speaking firmly and deliberately so Shemek can read her lips.

Sankey, an occupational therapist, instead takes hold of her iPhone and speaks into it.

She is going to loosen the sling behind you and you need to work on keeping your trunk tight and your butt in and dont go with the sling, she says.

Her message displays on the screen. Sankey holds the phone in front of Shemek so he can read the instructions. Its the easiest way to communicate with him during therapy sessions because he lost his hearing. She mimics her command to Shemek as physical therapist Shannon Roth adjusts the sling that was holding him up.

The Columbus man fights to hold form. His arms are outstretched on the table in front of him. After just a few moments, his breath comes in gasps and he clenches his eyes closed.

This is really tiring. If he was weaning (off the ventilator), it would be harder. He wouldnt do an activity like this. Just breathing on your own is difficult, Sankey says.

On this day, he was able to stand for about 14 minutes.

As well as leaving posies somewhere in Wellington once a week, Ingrid Pritchard and her team at Scent Floral Boutique give away weekly bouquets to breast cancer sufferers and their support people.

Pritchard became familiar with the Sweet Louise charitable trust at a memorial service for a friend who passed away after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Sweet Louise aims to improve the quality of life for women with breast cancer, relying on donations and support from businesses to provide vouchers for services such as spa treatments, lawn mowing, food and childcare.

"I met the speaker, Elva Phillips, at the memorial and wanted to do something for them, and donate a random act of kindness posy," Pritchard says.

"We have it ready every Monday for someone at Sweet Louise to pick up and give it to someone deserving, whether it's a member, staff, sometimes it might go to a member's mum, or one of the drivers.

"We have been doing it for about two years now."

Phillips says she has been blown away by Ingrid's generosity and humble attitude.
