Residents react to cemetery conditions - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Residents have been expressing outrage over the condition of city-operated cemeteries and it's getting results.

On Wednesday city workers were out cleaning up multiple cemeteries that have been in awful condition.

Pat Garchow and her husband Martin stopped by Forest Lawn Cemetery on Wednesday.

Loved ones have been fed up with the overgrown grass and weeds in the Saginaw cemeteries, especially near veterans graves on Memorial Day.

But when the couple arrived they saw volunteers and several city workers had already cleaned the area up.

City workers were mowing the grass at Forest Lawn on Tuesday. On Wednesday crews were fixing up Oakwood and Brady Hill cemeteries.

Public services director Phil Karwat said there are a few factors to blame for the recent conditions at the cemeteries during Memorial Day, including the weather and a lack of employees.

Karwat said the city has a new commitment with Tri-Cap, a community corrections program. Which means there should be more crews available to help maintain the cemeteries starting this week.

In the meantime Garchow said she hopes the city starts to make cemetery upkeep a bigger priority.

City awards landscaping contract - May 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Corsicana The Corsicana City Council awarded a two year-plus contract for mowing and landscape maintenance of city properties and parks when it met Tuesday.

Aguado Lawn Care, owned by Tony Aguado, a fireman for the city of Corsicana, was the low bidder of four companies that bid on the project that includes not only mowing approximately 465 acres of parks and rights-of-way, but maintaining them as well.

Council members discussed the scope of the contract in a work session prior to Tuesdays vote. The project was re-bid at mid year because the city terminated the contract with its previous contractor over performance problems, said City Manager Connie Standridge.

The contract calls for mowing and maintenance of 13 city parks, six municipal buildings, and 18 medians, entrances and even some TxDOT properties. The city will pay approximately $29,700 monthly for Aguados services, based on the frequency of mowing and maintenance needed at the selected sites.

Standridge said the move to contract mowing and landscape maintenance a decision the city made about four years ago has generally worked well for the city, and reduced the number of employees in the parks department from 14 to seven.

The deal with Aguado will cost more than the previous contractor by about $5,400 per month, but includes about 90 additional acres not involved in the previous contract. Still, Aguados bid was the lowest of all four received in response to the citys call for bids.

Standridge said the new deal will allow the city to eliminate one full-time position in the parks department that is currently filled through a temporary employment service.

Aguado said he would be purchasing new equipment from local dealers to fulfill the contract with the city, and would work along with a five-person crew to make sure everythings done right.

The council approved the new deal unanimously, set to run through October 2016.

In other action Tuesday, council members heard requests from three non-profit agencies for funding in the 2014-15 budget year The Freedom Flag Plaza Committee requested $6,000 to help fund additional improvements in Bunert Park; Community Services, Inc. asked for continued financial support from the city for the Meals on Wheels program; and the Festival of Lights Committee asked the city to fund the annual Christmas celebration in the amount of $6,000 in the upcoming budget.

Man rescues grandson from burning home - May 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Kenneth Baker was mowing his lawn when he heard his nieces boyfriend yell "The house is on fire!"

Baker then saw smoke and flames billowing out of his raised-ranch home on Pleasant Street, the Enterprise reported.

He ran into the home to rescue the only person inside: his 15-year-old grandson, Robert, who is a special needs student.

But Baker, 66, said the house was already engulfed in thick, black smoke.

"You couldn't even see inside," he recalled minutes after Sunday's fire. "I was screaming to my grandson... he calls me Dad. I said, Where are you? He said, Dad over here. I went directly to the living room from (the sound of) his voice and from there, got him out as quickly as I could."

"I was ready to pass out, thats how bad it was, Baker said. It was all black smoke. He didnt know which way to go so he just stayed in there in that smoke."

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the one-alarm blaze at 43 Pleasant St. late Sunday morning, said Fire Lt. Rick Emord.

No injuries were reported, and officials said the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

Emord was among firefighters who responded to the house after receiving an emergency call reporting a possible basement fire at 10:40 a.m. Sunday.

When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke showing from the front of the house, and flames coming out of a basement window, Emord said.

City opens yard enforcement hotline - May 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

City ordinance requires that lawns be kept shorter than eight inches in height and noxious weeds be controlled.

Residents are encouraged to report potential nuisance vegetation violations by calling the Lawn Enforcement Hotline at 978-6900 during normal business hours or leave a voice message after hours or on weekends. Potential violations also can be reported online at http://www.siouxfalls.org/weeds.

When the City receives a complaint about a parcel of land that is being neglected, the City investigates the complaint with a site visit. If the complaint is valid, the property owner is sent a courtesy letter asking that the nuisance be corrected. Generally, property owners are given seven days to correct the problem. Only one courtesy letter is sent on a property per year.

The City then reinspects the property on or after the due date. If the problem has not been corrected, a City Code Enforcement Officer issues a $100 citation for the violation. In addition, the City has contracted with lawn mowing and weed spraying services who correct the violation. The property owner is billed for the work, and if the bill is left unpaid, the cost is assessed against the property.

Residents are reminded to monitor their property throughout the year and ensure it remains in compliance. For more information about the Citys ordinances regarding nuisance vegetation, go to http://www.siouxfalls.org/weeds.

Green lawn-care franchise offers opportunity - May 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Herb Hauls grew up far from environmental nirvana, in an asphalt-heavy North Philadelphia neighborhood where buses and cars junked up the air and blades of grass were few.

He earned a degree in electrical engineering at Drexel University, working first at Peco Energy Co. and then for the Navy in ship acquisitions, overseeing vessels' electric plants and control systems. He cleared six figures last year, he said.

Now, he's mowing lawns for a living.

This is not an act of desperation. It's a fully reasoned career switch based on a belief that Philadelphians, no matter how tiny their allotment of turf, and their lawn-rich suburban counterparts will have an environmental conscience akin to that of property owners in other parts of the country - and will be willing to open their wallets to back it up.

As the name implies, Clean Air is more than organic treatment of soil and the green stuff it sprouts. Non-chemical alternatives have been around for at least 20 years.

It's what's on each of its trucks that distinguishes Clean Air: a roof-mounted, 135-watt, 12-volt solar panel and an inverter to charge its all-electric equipment for mowing (except for ride-ons), trimming, and blowing.

"It's a great talking point," Hauls said of his solar-powered offerings. "Whether people care is another issue. I don't think we have on the East Coast as environmentally conscious people as on the West Coast. It's a matter of educating."

Clean Air's website (cleanairlawncare.com) does some of that with the following assertions:

Mackay man wants to help others to be business owners - May 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Topics: business, fanchise, local, mackay

FOR anyone looking to begin their own business, Express Mobile Services North Queensland master franchisor Noel Matsen is the man to see.

Mr Matsen is taking advantage of the Daily Mercury's Buy Local Bargains campaign and is offering people the opportunity of beginning their own car detailing or lawn mowing franchise for $6950.

As part of the campaign readers need to snip out the Express Services coupon on page 4 of today's paper.

Mr Matsen said it was a great opportunity because it was a low start-up cost for the business.

"You still get the full training, all the training is paid for plus all the equipment. The (franchise) is about $6950 all inclusive to get started," he said.

The born-and-bred Mackay man works for Express Mobile Services, which is aiming to establish franchises throughout Queensland, Australia and the world.

Mr Matsen has his own franchise with Express Services, an air-conditioning cleaner service, which he began in October last year.

"I then brought the master franchise rights, which means I'm now the master franchisor for north Queensland," he said.

"What I'm doing as part of my job is advertising in the local bargains just to raise awareness and to sell franchises here, Rocky (Rockhampton) or wherever."
