In a Sector WhatsApp group, the 85-year-old owner of the house maintained that the driver from Bapu dham came just once to take salary that too on April 10. The owner added that she did not require the services of the driver. She added that she had sent the maid to the hospital.

However, local councillor Devinder Singh Babla said that according to government authorities, the driver from Bapu dham kept coming to the residence and also visited on April 25 and during other times which are being concealed.

While speaking to The Indian Express, Babla said, It is not a crime to get infected. Just that if the maid has developed fever, they can intimate us so that we coordinate with the authorities. The maid has been going around taking vegetables from vendors, taking the dog for a walk and various other things.

When asked about why the Bapu dham colony was sealed in phases, he said, When the first case was reported, we sealed the affected part where 3,000 people were staying. Then we expanded the sealed area. There was no delay at all in sealing the area. It was done immediately as and when the cases were reported.

Evening Brief: Deal reached to increase pay of essential workers – iPolitics.ca - May 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Good evening, readers.

    The Lead

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says a cost-sharing agreement has been reached with the provinces and territories to provide lower-earning essential workers wage top-ups.

It will be up to provincial and territorial governments, some of whom have already introduced wage increases for some essential workers, to decide which workers qualify and how much they will receive.

Ottawa will provide up to $3 billion for the effort with the provinces and territories offering $1 billion.

    Jolson Lim has the details.

    In Canada

Greyhound Canada is temporarily cancelling all of its bus routes and services as ridership plummets amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting May 13, the bus company will halt all routes until passenger demand recovers.

The bus operator says ridership has dropped by 95 per cent, which has already led Greyhound to decrease services twice since March.

The Canadian Press has this story.

A large majority of Canadians that responded to a federal consultation on medical assistance in dying (MAiD) supported expanding access to patients suffering from dementia, according to new documents tabled in the House.

The Liberal government, however, did not heed that request and introduced less expansive changes to the MAiD framework earlier this year, in hopes of quickly passing court-mandated amendments to the existing law.

Documents provided to MPs in April contained the results of the more than 300,000 online submissions that were made to the Department of Justice as part of the consultation it conducted in January on how the MAiD eligibility should be revised.

    Charlie Pinkerton has more.

The federal government is leaning on provincial and territorial governments to chip in to help cash-starved municipalities facing large financial shortfalls because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities has asked the Trudeau government for at least $10 billion in aid to cover an estimated $10- to $15-billion loss in revenue for local governments in the near term.

The organization representing hundreds of municipalities across the country said Ottawa was in the strongest financial position to provide support.

    Lim explains.

As Ontario faces calls from Toronto public health to consider new measures to combat overdose deaths including safe supply programs like one in British Columbia its top medical officer is drawing a contrast between the challenges faced in B.C. and Ontario.

They have big challenges there. We dont exactly have that, Ontarios chief medical officer of health, David Williams, said on Wednesday about British Columbia after labelling the overdose challenges experienced in Vancouver as one-of-a-kind.

We have a larger, wide-spread (challenge) in a number of different municipalities, and each one is a little bit different, Williams said.

    Victoria Gibson reports.

Google affiliate Sidewalk Labs is walking away from an ambitious project for a high-tech neighbourhood on Torontos waterfront, citing unprecedented economic uncertainty.

The organization said Thursday that it is abandoning its controversial smart city plans that had envisioned a state-of-the-art neighbourhood on a derelict parcel of land that had drawn the ire of those concerned with the privacy implications of living or moving through an area that is under constant surveillance.

    CP has this story, too.

These jobs are in high demand in the UAE during the Coronavirus pandemic – Gulf News - May 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Picture used for illustrative purposes only. Image Credit: Gulf News archives Highlights

Dubai: Jobs have been lost, people are facing serious pay cuts. The global coronavirus pandemic has triggered very difficult economic times. However, there is hope.

While some sectors have seen a high unemployment rate , there are other areas that have seen a rise in demand.

    Job opportunities opening up

It might seem hard to believe, but even in the age of COVID-19, there are jobs that are not just available but in such high demand that companies are experiencing a shortage in staff.

So, here is how you can plan to get your next job during the coronavirus pandemic, if you have relevant experience or the necessary skill set.

    Apply through the right portals

There are several online portals that you can use to set up a professional profile, including government job portals and industry specific ones. So, if you are looking for a job, here are some of the ways in which you can start your job hunt.

    Government job portals:

Federal Government job portal - Federal Authority for Government Human Resources

Emirates Job Bank, for UAE nationals interested in applying for jobs offered by government entities and the private sector.

Tawteen Gate, Ministry of Human Resources snd Emiratisation (MOHRE) service for UAE nationals only

Dubai Careers - Dubai Government job portal

    For hospitality industry:

    http://www.catererglobal.com/UAE/Jobs

    http://www.find-nanny-and-maid.com/

    Reach out to companies directly

A more traditional approach could also help you go further in your job hunt. By doing an online search for jobs in your sector and reaching out to companies within industries that are experiencing a rise in employment opportunities, you can adopt a more focussed approach to your job hunt.

    Which professions are in demand?

According to Abbas Ali, Senior Vice President of sales at TASC Outsourcing, a staffing firm based in the UAE, there are certain sectors that have seen a surge in job opportunities.

Demand in the industry sector is huge, particularly in e-commerce. We are getting a lot of enquiries for high-end technology professionals who can help companies through their digital transformation, as almost every company tries to brush up their online presence. This is also an area where we are able to recruit people working remotely, whether they are in India or in Romania. Whenever the borders open, these professionals will fly in but for the time being they are working remotely, he said.

    - Abbas Ali, Senior Vice President of sales at TASC Outsourcing

Another sector experiencing a high demand is logistics and delivery.

Everybody needs a driverright now as well as warehouse helpers, and people who can support logistics, he added.

Bana Shomali, founder of servicemarket.com, a digital marketplace for home services, said that the home service industry also appeared to be resilient to the pandemic crisis.

Demand for home services like moving, maintenance, electrical, plumbing, pest control, and home cleaning is still strong despite the crisis. While we saw some initial slowdown in demand from customers at the start of the movement restrictions, demand for these essential servicesare now back to pre-coronavirus levels, Shomali said.

In terms of services that saw an increase in demand we have found that deep cleaning, disinfection and sanitisation services, across homes and offices have surged in demand. We are currently handling eight times the usual demand for these services. This is a precautionary disinfection service that homes and offices are requesting to ensure that their residences and workplaces are virus- and germ-free. We expect that this service will remain essential over the next six to 12 months, she added.

    - Bana Shomali, founder of servicemarket.com

So, if you are wondering if you would be able to capitalise on any of these jobs that are in demand, here is a list of all the occupations:

    Technology

    1. Software engineering (Mobile Developers, DevOps, Full stack developer)

    2. Cloud Infrastructure and Cyber Security

    3. Business Intelligence and data analytics

    4. Digital product development and management user interface and user experience (UI/UX) and product managers

What we have noticed is that businesses are currently asking how they can get the right technology in place to provide their products and services online. So, if you are a technology expert you should be sprucing up your online profile, adding details of what kind of work you have done and updating your LinkedIn profile, Ali said.

    Finance

    Credit controllers

    Finance planning and analysis

In the current scenario because cash is tight, we are seeing a lot of companies hiring credit controllers who can manage the finances and make sense of the data to help companies make better financial decisions, Ali said.

    Logistics/e-commerce

    Riders/Drivers

    Forklift operator

If you have a UAE motorcycle or driving licence, one sector that has seen a huge demand istransportation, with many establishments offering home delivery options. Also, if you have any experience in retail and promotion, you should reach out to online marketplaces, whether it is food delivery or general websites, to find out if they are hiring, according to Ali.

If you were working in a souq, and have experience with retail and promotion, try to make a shift to e-retailers, he said.

    Insurance

    Claim administrators

    Administrative staff

    Backend team of data coders

Many third-party insurance providers have requested for staff that can help them deal with the surge in claims they are experiencing. While having experience in insurance can help your chances of getting hired, any person with experience in processing transactions, whether having worked in banks or pharmacies, can also try to apply for such jobs, Ali said.

    Medical service providers

    - Nurses

    - Doctors

    - Consultants

We are seeing a rise in demand for medical professionals, not necessarily from hospitals and clinics but from corporates. Many corporates need nurses as they are going to do basic health checks for their employees each day. So, if you are currently a licensed nurse taking a break, there is a lot of demand in your sector, Ali said.

    Home services

    - Domestic workers

    - Deep cleaning

    - Disinfection services

Even if you do not have the necessary qualification for technical jobs like disinfection, the industry also requires support and business development staff, according to Shomali.

Technical jobs do require specific qualifications and certifications, within maintenance, especially. However, other jobs in the industry such as operations, business development and project management will only require expertise in that industry or a similar one. So, you would need relevant experience in any industry that is focused around manpower, operations or construction, she said.

For technicians or cleaners who are looking to enter or re-enter the home service industry, our recommendation would be to seek employment with licensed home services companies. The home services industry is regulated in the UAE and only companies with the correct licensing are allowed to perform these services. Furthermore, licensed companies can provide technicians and cleaners with financial security, workman insurance, and health insurance, which are critical for their security and safety as they perform these jobs, she added.

Shomali also cautioned residents against using third party websites for domestic workers, whether full-time or part-time.

Licensed companies are protecting their workers and customers by doing daily temperature checks, making sure their staff have the right PPE (personal protective equipment like masks and gloves), sanitising dormitories and vehicles multiple times a week, and giving their workers paid sick leave and health insurance to stay healthy and safe, she said.

    Opportunity for stay-at-home mums

With remote work now being a norm, Ali said that stay-at-home mums who want to enter the job market should sharpen their CVs and apply for jobs that match their profile.

The pandemic has opened up a huge opportunity for them, if they had stopped working because they could not go to the office earlier. They are now also potential candidates to fill in any job vacancies as everyone is accepting working from home. If you have a good skill set, you can give the employer a cost advantage as you are working from home and anyone who can do that in this tough time is a good candidate, Ali added.

    Global impact

The economic impact of the pandemic, quite like its impact on public health, has been global. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the preventive measures taken by governments globally have led to 2.7 billion workers being without a job, adding that an estimated 1.25 billion workers, representing almost 38 per cent of the global workforce, are employed in sectors that are now facing a severe decline in output and face a high risk of workforce displacement.

2.7billion number of workers estimated to lose their jobs globally due to the financial impact of COVID-19, according to ILO.

However, by adopting a more strategic approach to your job profile and taking the time out to work on any skills that may help you transition to a sector that is hiring, you can use the change in the workforce to your advantage.

Coronavirus: Public urged not to rush out when measures ease on May 12 – The Straits Times - May 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Even as barbers, hairdressers and some other businesses prepare to reopen from Tuesday, National Development Minister Lawrence Wong has urged people not to rush.

"I know some people may not have had a haircut for some time, but there is no need to rush to go out to have a haircut on May 12," he stressed.

There will be lots of time to do what needs to be done, he said, adding that people should pace themselves.

"We should remain vigilant and not take any chances. (The easing of measures on May 12) should not be an opportunity for us to go out more frequently," Mr Wong stressed.

The multi-ministry task force, which the minister is co-chair of, had announced earlier that certain businesses would be allowed to resume operations on Tuesday.

These include all food outlets selling packaged snacks, cakes, confectionery and desserts as well as home-based food businesses and hairdressers, subject to some restrictions.

For example, hairdressers may offer basic haircuts, while dining in remains banned. Restaurants and other eateries have to ensure that they have delivery services.

"The circuit breaker is still in place and we should make the most of the next three weeks and more through the circuit breaker period to bring our community numbers down as much as possible," Mr Wong added.

At the community level, the number of Covid-19 infections being reported every day has been coming down. The average in the past week was about 10 a day, the minister said. The number of unlinked cases has also come down.

"Importantly, if you look at the surveillance programme which we have put in place to test cases in our clinics with prolonged respiratory illness, those cases have also been coming down, which suggests that the number of unlinked cases in our community is lower than it used to be in the recent weeks," Mr Wong said.

For businesses, the minister said that they should similarly be in no rush to reopen and neglect safe management practices which they must first put in place.

Even as some shops are eager to reopen, others are cautious.

Bak kwa brand Lim Chee Guan told The Straits Times that it will reopen its flagship store in New Bridge Road first and monitor the situation before deciding when to reopen the other three outlets.

Housewife Annie Tan, 42, said: "I'm definitely excited that some of the shops are resuming services but it's important to heed the call to not all rush out on the first day.

"My hairdresser has already messaged all her customers to say that even when her shop reopens, services will be by appointment only. If more businesses do the same, the situation should be under control."

Coronavirus: All TCM shops allowed to sell retail products from May 12 – The Straits Times - May 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

SINGAPORE - All traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) medical halls will be allowed to sell retail products from Tuesday (May 12), Health Minister Gan Kim Yong announced on Friday (May 8).

This is in addition to the 130 TCM medical halls attached to registered TCM practitioners that were previously allowed to open on May 5 to sell retail products, provide consultation and herbal dispensary services.

"This will provide more convenience, especially for our seniors," said Mr Gan.

The ministry had received feedback from seniors that it was too far to travel to these few medical halls to buy medicine, Mr Gan said, during a press conference held by members of the multi-ministry task force set up to combat the spread of the virus.

He added that he had promised Member of Parliament Lee Bee Wah that he would look into the matter. Ms Lee (Nee Soon GRC) had asked in Parliament on Monday whether the reopening of TCM shops could be prioritised.

However, Mr Gan stressed that the medical halls must put in place the necessary safe management measures before commencing operations, particularly as they serve many seniors.

He added: "Let us work together to keep our seniors safe. Let us keep up our good habits, such as safe distancing, personal hygiene and wearing of masks.

"Avoid interacting with seniors if you are unwell. Together, we can protect them from the infection."

Customers rushed to receive acupuncture treatments at TCM clinics on Tuesday (May 5), the first day such treatments were allowed to resume since the start of circuit breaker measures on April 7.

Since the introduction of circuit breaker measures, TCM clinics had been allowed only to provide consultation and dispense herbal medicine to their patients.

Services like cupping, guasha and tui na are still not allowed.

Company officials saythey are different than other maid services, because they are certified technicians. Theyare also sharing some tips on how peoplecan clean theirhomes, like they do.

"If you are disinfecting, make sure you leave it on for proper dwell time. It can be anywhere from 45 seconds from the product we useto 10 minutes, so what that means it needs to stay wet for the entire time for it to inactivate the germs and viruses there,"said company owner Eugena Bring.

Bring says the proper way to wipe is by folding the cloth.

There are eightsides to a cloth, so if you are folding it correctly, you can clean all sides with this because when you are cleaning and removing particulates, you have one wipe per side then fold it,"said Bring.

Bring adds not to cross-contaminatethe cloth with other areas of the house, and says to always cleantouchpoints like handles, switches, or knobs.

Hotels are adapting to the pandemic, some by helping the homeless – WYDaily - May 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Pineapple Inn and Housing Center is located on Richmond Road by TGI Fridays (WYDaily file)

Multiple industries have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and the local hotel business is no exception.

As hotels continue to operate at very limited capacity, many are still finding it difficult to stay above ground. In a letter from the Williamsburg Hotel and Motel Association, the organization asked Gov. Ralph Northam to consider allowing tourism businesses to re-open under certain restrictions.

That means reducing maximum occupancy in hotels, maintaining social distancing protocols and creating new sanitary practices in communal areas.

The letter also asks for Northam to have more consistent dates in his executive orders as the dates from Executive Orders 53 and 55 have different expiration dates. Having a more consistent set of dates would help the industry prepare for reopening, according to the letter.

Were not putting economics before health, said Ron Kirkland, executive director of the association. Were appreciative of what the governor has done, but were just looking for some consistency.

In the meantime, hotels, motels and bed and breakfast businesses in the area have had approximately a third of their normal business, Kirkland said. And two dozen have temporarily closed altogether.

Kirkland said a few might stay open because theyve borrowed money to build their structure and require someone onsite at all times.

But for those that have remained open and accepting guests, theyre changing their practices. Instead of daily maid services, some only have cleaning happen after checkout. In addition, when guests check in and out of the facility, staff are wearing personal protective equipment to keep themselves safe.

As the state prepares to re-open, Kirkland said the industry wants to know what best practices to adopt when moving forward.

Even with the letter to Northam, Kirkland admitted theres no real assurance that business will bounce back.

Thats the million-dollar question, he said. Theres going to be a group of people still uncomfortable with traveling but theres also the fact that people have been cooped up in their homes, so theres a pent up demand.

Kirkland said it will depend on when other attractions, such as Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg, are able to reopen.

In the meantime, some of those locations are using the extra space to house the local homeless population.

When the pandemic first came to the area in March, Barbara Watson, assistant social services director for James City County, said the county reached out to hotels to see if they would be willing to shelter homeless individuals. The concern came after the Community Faith Mission winter shelter closed and left people without a place to go.

However, while two hotels, Best Western Historic District and Holiday Inn Express Lightfoot, responded saying that they would be willing to house individuals, Watson said there havent been any who needed the resource.

The [Community Faith Mission] shelter was only 25 people, but we didnt know whether or not there would be people losing housing during the pandemic, she said. What occurred was the inability to evict people, which made a difference.

Those in the homeless population have returned to other hotels in the area that have been providing housing services for years, such as the Pineapple Inn, Watson said.

We have a significant number of people in our community who make hotels their permanent residence year round, so that hasnt changed at all, she said. Those people are still there.

Watson said there hasnt been any need to quarantine anyone in the homeless population so far, but the county is compiling a list of possible locations to do so should the need arise.

The countys main purpose is to ensure that people remain housed during this time, she said. We dont want anyone on the street so we are working to provide and fill in those gaps.

Amy Lee, manager at Pineapple Inn & Housing Center, saidthey have implemented sanitation measures such as wearing masks, gloves and using physical, social distancing.

We have a process, she said. Most of my residents are longer term, but when they check out, we do a deep clean, full sanitation of the room.

Besides 3e Restoration, Pineapple Inn is working with localities, including James City County, New Kent County and Williamsburg, to house people who are homeless during the coronavirus.

Most of the referrals have been from James City County Social Services as well as nonprofits such as Williamsburg House of Mercy and United Way.

As of Wednesday, the hostel has 64 out of 114 rooms occupied and they are expecting more people this week.

The first is Friday and a lot of people will get their money on Friday, she said. So we are expecting more people.

Lee is not sure if the property owner has applied for FEMA funds yet.

When asked if how they were handling people who couldnt pay rent and Northams executive order regarding evictions, Lee said she doesnt anticipate they would be asking people to leave and the hostel works with people who cant afford rent on a case-by-case basis.

Other than implementing the social distancing measures, limiting visitors and increased sanitation efforts, not a lot has changed for the hostels operations.

The biggest difference for us is the outpouring from the community, she said, adding nonprofits, church groups and restaurants are bringing hot meals to the families multiple times a week.Tonight, we have La Tienda coming.

Kids meals are delivered three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and night-time meals twice a week on Mondays and Fridays.

This is all a waiting game for everybody, its one a day at a time, she said. Its keeping peoples spirits up and reiterating why we have to follow the rules in place currently. Were trying to make sure everyone who is here is safe.

Life is hard, when youre living in a hotel, its really hard, she added. Inherently, most people are good and we have a good group here.

Tammy Harden, executive director of 3e Restoration, a nonprofit that helps the homeless population in the area, said they have two rooms at Pineapple Inn, part of the nonprofits emergency homeless shelter program, Restoration Place.

Harden said they recently received a $3,600 grant from the Williamsburg Community Foundation to add two more rooms at the hostel.

Right now, were taking more families with children, she said.

Before the coronavirus, three people and one family were being housed at the inn. Now, they have added one family with another family pending, Harden said.

The COVID-19 Emergency Response Grant covers rent and additional rooms for a few months and the goal is to extend it to the end of the year, Harden said.

In the meantime, the nonprofit has partnered with home health care providers so their clients can work during the coronavirus and once the pandemic is over, they can access services like childcare assistance.

In terms of FEMA funding, Harden said she feels its kind of a last ditch effort since there are certainly requirements such as individuals being COVID-19 positive or being considered high risk.

So everybody is just trying to navigate it and the layers of funding and how we access them, she said. What we are seeing is a lot of the families who have been in hotels, who have lost their jobs, are the calls we are getting right now.

People the nonprofit cant house are referred to the regional homeless hotline or depending on their needs, other resources like Avalon, Harden said.

Sadly, right now a lot of the shelters are closed, she added. They may even have to go to Newport News or Hampton or Norfolk unfortunately.

3e Restoration is collecting donations for their COVID-19 Recovery Sponsor A Neighbor Initiative to help people with medical health, employment work and housing related issues when the coronavirus ends. You can donate here to the fund here.

Hollywood Offers Alternate History, and Glimpses of a Real One – The New York Times - May 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Let me guess, Patti LuPone says as she plinks olives into a martini. You came here to be a movie star.

Here, of course, is Hollywood, where dreams are made, faked, defeated and deferred. In Ryan Murphys Hollywood, a seven-episode limited series that comes to Netflix on Friday, LuPone plays Avis Amberg, a former actress married to the head of Ace Studios. Ace Studios, while fictional, looks like Paramount Pictures, walks like MGM and green-lights pictures more progressive than any the Golden Age birthed. Set in the late 1940s as the studio system began to wane, Hollywood enjoys this dizzy cocktail of history and hopeful make-believe.

As a kid, Murphy watched Hollywood oldies with his grandmother and became particularly attached to three actors: Anna May Wong, Hattie McDaniel and Rock Hudson all of them, he felt, stifled by the studio system.

I was attracted to the idea of lost potential, he said in a telephone interview last week. And maybe worried about it myself, that I was not going to be allowed to be who I wanted to be because of who I was.

After completing the first season of his series Feud, set in 1960s Hollywood, he mulled a more factual series honoring the systems victims. But ultimately, it was just too fragmented and also, to be honest, too depressing, he said.

He began to think along revisionist lines, instead, imagining what might have happened if people of color had been offered work commensurate with their talent, if the industry had allowed its queer members to live openly. Happy endings all around.

Hollywood, which he created with Ian Brennan, mingles actuality and what-if. Real people like Hudson (Jake Picking), Wong (Michelle Krusiec) and McDaniel (Queen Latifah) rub elbows and more with invented ones like David Corenswets Jack, an aspiring actor and sometime gigolo, and Darren Crisss Raymond, a biracial director who passes for white. Others merge fact and fictions, like LuPones Avis, inspired by David O. Selznicks wife, Irene Selznick, or Joe Mantellos Dick, a homage, at least in part, to the movie whiz Irving Thalberg.

To help sort entertainment history from fantasy, here is an introduction to the real-life figures who populate this counterfactual Hollywood and the inspirations for several of the seriess fictional characters. Action!

An actor who would ride the beefcake craze of the 1950s, Hudson, born Roy Harold Scherer Jr., came to Hollywood in the late 1940s.

He knew how he looked, said Picking, who wore facial prosthetics to play Hudson, a former Navy aircraft mechanic. He would stand out in front of the studio gates in his uniform hoping to bump into someone influential.

A bit player in the 40s, Hudson, who signed with the talent manager Henry Willson, graduated to westerns, adventure pictures and melodramas, earning an Oscar nomination for his work in Giant. In 1959, he starred opposite Doris Day in Pillow Talk, a comedy in which his character briefly masquerades as gay. He projected an attractive yet unthreatening masculinity, said Steve Cohan, an author and film historian.

Willson thwarted tabloid attempts to out Hudson as gay and Hudson later married Willsons secretary, Phyllis Gates, in what was possibly a lavender marriage meant to further allay suspicion. (Gates denied this. We were very much in love, she told a biographer.) In 1985, Hudsons publicist confirmed a diagnosis of AIDS, and two months later, Hudson became one of the first celebrities to die of AIDS-related complications.

A serial abuser and a starmaker with an impeccable eye for brawny, unformed talent, Willson helped rename and introduce actors such as Hudson, Tab Hunter and Troy Donahue, as well as women like Natalie Wood and Lana Turner. For a while there, he understood how to make his own little factory of these strapping all-American men and plug them into the movies, said Jim Parsons, who plays Willson in Hollywood. That doesnt excuse the despicable behavior by any means.

The well-documented behavior included demanding sex from his male clients and various forms of psychological abuse, even as he protected his roster from hostile press and blackmailers. He ranks right up there with Harvey Weinstein as one of the towns greatest monsters of all time, Murphy said. Deserted by his clients in later life, he died destitute.

Hollywoods first Asian-American star, Wong, a third-generation Chinese-American, grew up in Los Angeles, where her parents ran a laundry, and went on to appear in dozens of silent and sound films.

She was captivating, said Emily Carman, a film professor at Chapman University. Her presence radiated charisma and elegance.

A fashion plate and a publicity darling, she rarely won principal parts (her later B movies are an exception) or unexoticized roles. As Wong, played by Michelle Krusiec, says in the series, They dont want a leading lady who looks like me.

The role of O-Lan in The Good Earth, the film adaptation of Pearl S. Bucks China-set novel, seemed made-to-measure for Wong. But the production code, a self-censoring charter major studios adopted, prohibited romantic scenes between actors of different races. Since Paul Muni, a white actor, had been cast as O-Lans husband, the part instead went to Luise Rainer, a white actress who played O-Lan in yellowface and won an Oscar for it. The Good Earth producers offered Wong the role of a seductress, the movies villain, but she refused it.

An alcoholic who experienced periods of depression, she died in 1961 at the age of 56. Her lonely death, that for me was very sad to discover, Krusiec said.

The first person of color to win an Oscar, McDaniel, the daughter of former slaves, began her career in vaudeville, as did several of her siblings. She moved to Los Angeles in the early 1930s and soon found screen work playing maids.

She was a scene stealer, Carman said. She knew how to mobilize that stereotype to her advantage.

She fought for the role of Mammy in Gone With the Wind, arriving for her screen test in a real maids uniform. She won an Oscar for it, though at the ceremony itself she was relegated by the events organizers to a segregated table. While she hoped the award might unlock a broader away of roles, Hollywood only saw her as a maid.

Later in her career, some African-American activists attacked McDaniel for accepting regressive roles. Her stock response: Id rather play a maid and make $700 a week than be a maid and make $7.

A woman had to make a living, said Queen Latifah, who plays McDaniel. But it was a waste of her talent. She was a powerhouse. She could sing. She could dance. She could act. She was smart. She was funny. She had timing. She was brilliant.

In the third episode of Hollywood, the film director Cukor (Daniel London) throws a wild party with an elite guest list, including Leigh and Bankhead, and a crew of sex workers to provide postprandial entertainment. Cukor, who directed The Philadelphia Story and Gaslight, did host louche parties, many of them all-male. Leigh (Katie McGuinness), who played Scarlett OHara in Gone With the Wind, and Bankhead (Paget Brewster), who tested for the role, were both close friends of Cukors. In the late 40s, Leigh was about to appear in the stage version of A Streetcar Names Desire and was experiencing episodes of bipolar disorder. Bankhead, known as one of Hollywoods most accomplished seducers of women (including McDaniel, according to a persistent rumor) as well as men, had recently had a hit with Alfred Hitchcocks Lifeboat.

Though Murphy disclaims any interest in Bowers, Dylan McDermotts Ernie runs a service station that doubles as an anything-goes bordello. This dovetails with Bowerss claims, aired in a controversial 2012 memoir, that he spent decades providing sexual services to the Hollywood elect, first as a pump jockey then as a party bartender.

Whatever folks wanted, I had it. I could make all their fantasies come true, he wrote in the introduction to Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars. The book alleges that Bowers arranged liaisons for the likes of Hudson, Cole Porter and Leigh (who all appear in the series as clients), as well as Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. (The stars he wrote about were already dead but the families of some of them, like Cary Grant, disputed the claims.)

Within Hollywood, Jeremy Popes screenwriter character, Archie Coleman (glancingly inspired by James Baldwins Hollywood experience), sells a script about Entwistle, a 23-year-old aspiring actress who finally achieved brief fame by jumping from the H of the Hollywood sign, back when the sign still spelled Hollywoodland.

Born in Wales, she moved with her father to New York and began acting as a teenager, including a tour with the New York Theater Guild and in a number of Broadway plays. In the spring of 1932, she came to Los Angeles with a play and stayed to shoot her only film. Her contract was not renewed. After telling her uncle she planned to visit friends, she disappeared. A hiker discovered her body at the foot of the sign.
