PEORIA, Ariz. -- Some parents in the Valley are deeply concerned about the possibility of mold inside their children's classrooms. And with the chance of more rain on the way, it has added a sense of urgency at Terramar Elementary near Happy Valley and 67th Avenue in Peoria.

Parents said this isn't the first time they've had this issue.

In fact, they said they believe it's a leak in the building that hasn't been fixed for a couple of years. And although the district said there isn't any mold in the building from last weeks storm, some parents said they don't believe it.

"I want to be more reassured that my kids are in a safe environment," said Dex Nolan.

Nolan said she has a 13-year-old and a 10-year-old at Terramar Elementary, but she kept them home from school Monday.

"Partly to make a statement and because I have seen mold there, she said. They can't tell me there's no mold, and that makes me not trust them when they say there isn't mold. I have seen mold."

Peoria school relocates students for mold testing - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Students at a Peoria elementary school will spend Wednesday and Thursday classes in temporary quarters after concerns of water damage and mold at their school.

Angry parents, teachers and concerned citizens met with Terramar School and Deer Valley Unified School District officials Monday night to voice their concerns about safety in the classrooms.

Parents and teachers said they took air samples from several of the saturated rooms and they tested positive for mold.

District officials, however, said their tests found no mold at the school.

But parents on Tuesday morning received an email from school Principal Sharon Weister and DVUSD Superintendent James Veitenheimer stating that classes would be relocated to Christ's church of the Valley for Wednesday and Thursday.

The school was inundated by the torrential rains of Sept. 8, and leaks soaked drywall, shelving, carpets and books, much of which was covered in mold, parents and teachers said.

"At the conclusion of the meeting, it was determined in the best interest of students, teachers and parents of Terramar, school will be in session at an alternative site," the district said in the letter.

The letter said the students would continue to be relocated while additional testing and remediation is completed.

Two people, a parent and general manager of a company that tests for mold, who spoke at the meeting were invited by the district to conduct their own air quality and mold tests, according to the letter.

Laboratory confirms black mold in Chandler apartment - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    CHANDLER, AZ (CBS5) -

Jessica Ford's ceiling caved in with water during last week's powerful storm.

And when a maintenance man opened it up, the single mom said she saw black mold.

Managers with Laguna Village Apartments in Chandler denied there was a problem but now there's proof.

"I'm feeling even more scared than I was before, to know that it was confirmed and that is what it was that's what we've been inhaling for a couple months," Ford said.

CBS 5 News sent a sample of her ceiling sheet rock, provided by Ford, to Southeast Environmental Microbiology Laboratories where it tested positive for stachybotrys, a black mold that canproduce toxic spores.

The discovery is a far cry from what management told Ford last Thursday in a voicemail.

"The drywall has a colored backing on the back of it, and that is what the discolored spots are," said a manager with P.B. Bell, the company that owns Laguna Village. "It's actually not mold, and there's no mold that's been seen."

After sending the SEEML report to P.B. Bell, CBS 5 News asked why Ford was told it wasn't mold.

Through email, marketing director Kira Bell wrote, "The response was based on a preliminary conversation prior to any investigation or professional testing."

Mold can imperil your home and your health - September 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Servpro of Alachua County West employee Robert Harrison holds up mold-covered drywall while working at a Gainesville, Fla. home removing a mold infestation, Thursday, August 28, 2014.

Among the consequences of this summers frequent rains and intense humidity, besides thriving yards and weeds, is the increased chance of mold growth, threatening residents homes and health.

While the rainfall this year in and around Alachua County generally has been a normal amount, mold growth is rampant. Mark Raymond, the owner of SERVPRO, a mold remediation company serving Alachua County, said his company has seen a 10 percent increase in mold cleanup calls this year over past seasons.

By the time most people realize there is a problem, Raymond said, they have tried everything they can to get rid of it. Trying to resolve the problem yourself can be a mistake, he said.

Even though most people think they can see the problem, mold spores by themselves are microscopic, so people actually cant see where theyre supposed to clean, he said. They could cross-contaminate their homes or kick spores up into the air that were dormant.

The best advice, he said, is to call a state-licensed mold assessor who will look at the structure from a mold and air quality perspective, then do swab tests and air samplings to determine the extent of the problem.

Once the source and the intensity are determined, remediators can remove the mold and spores.

The weather does play a role in mold growth, but rainfall and mold are not necessarily correlated, according to Ben Nelson of the National Weather Service. Just because there is limited rain does not mean there is low humidity, which can spur mold growth.

Mold needs time to develop, he said, so a wet spring can turn into a bloom later in the year.

Mold is not only hard to discern and difficult to clean, it can also cause severe allergies, leading to prolonged illness, according to officials at Gainesville Medical Centers, a company at 805 NW 13th St. that specializes in dealing with such allergens.
