Light pollution shown to affect plant growth and food webs - March 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

22 hours ago Researchers from the University of Exeter simulated the effects of street lighting on artificial grassland plots containing a community of invertebrates at night, exposing them to two different types of light treatment - a 'white' light similar to newer commercial LED street lighting systems and an 'amber' light simulating the type of sodium street lamp still found in much of the UK. The experiments investigated both top-down (driven by predators) and bottom-up (food or resource limited) effects of the lights on the population density of a species of pea aphid, and in the presence and absence of predators including ladybirds Credit: Jon Bennie/University of Exeter

Artificial night time light from sources such as street lamps affects the growth and flowering of plants and even the number of insects that depend on those plants for food, a study published today confirms.

The research shows that light pollution can impact the natural environment in complex ways that may be hard to predict. Due to the global extent of artificial light at night, there are concerns that these ecological impacts may be widespread.

Researchers from the University of Exeter simulated the effects of street lighting on artificial grassland plots containing a community of invertebrates at night, exposing them to two different types of light treatment - a 'white' light similar to newer commercial LED street lighting systems and an 'amber' light simulating the type of sodium street lamp still found in much of the UK.

The experiments investigated both top-down (driven by predators) and bottom-up (food or resource limited) effects of the lights on the population density of a species of pea aphid, and in the presence and absence of predators including ladybirds.

The low intensity amber light was shown to inhibit, rather than induce, flowering in greater bird's foot trefoil, a wild relative of peas and beans that is a key source of food for the pea aphid in grasslands and road verges. In mid summer aphids feed on the flowering shoots; the number of aphids was significantly suppressed under the light treatment in mid-August due to the limited amount of food available.

Professor Kevin Gaston, Director of the Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) said: "These are the first findings from major long-term experiments being funded by the European Research Council, and already reveal how profound the impacts of artificial night time lighting can be on even simple communities of organisms."

Dr Jonathan Bennie of the ESI added: "Our results suggest that by lighting up our night time environment we trigger complex effects on natural food webs. While we are all aware that street lights often attract insects at night, we show that they may have more permanent, widespread impacts on wildlife and ecosystems."

Davies, David Cruse, Richard Inger and Kevin J. Gaston is published in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B.

Outdoor furniture borrows from indoor comfort - March 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

It's time to ignore the weather outside your door and imagine a warm scenario in which you enjoy time on your patio.

Those outdoor living spaces have come a long way from the days when outdoor furnishings meant a few inexpensive folding chairs around a flimsy plastic table.

Today's outdoor chairs might be wrought iron or wrought aluminum, with upholstered seats. The table might be stone or wood or an elegant faux version of either, and would not look out of place inside in the dining room. Add outdoor sound systems, carpets and lighting, and the backyard or balcony can look and feel like an extension of the home.

That notion gets ramped up this spring and summer; manufacturers are offering new furniture, textiles and materials that resemble indoor furnishings yet can withstand the elements.

Getting the right look can be tricky; you don't want it to seem like you just plunked a sofa from the living room down onto the patio.

Here's a look at what's hot for Warm Weather 2015:

    Vintage modern and ultra-modern

Watch for midcentury modern styling in outdoor pieces to coordinate with this popular interior style. Gloster's Dansk collection includes a chair with marine-grade, leather-look upholstery and teak tables, designed by Dane Povl Eskildsen. (gloster.com )

After World War II, California designer Walter Lamb was helping salvage sunken Navy warships at Pearl Harbor when he started messing around with the brass tubing and fittings. His prototypical outdoor furniture collection was put into production by Brown Jordan, the Pasadena-based company that pioneered outdoor furniture. Today's iterations of Lamb's pieces are still crafted from brass, which you can leave alone to develop a patina or polish to retain the shine. The seats are marine-grade cording. (dwr.com)

Luxe looks evoking old Hollywood are also in. Beautiful on an urban terrace, these pieces are chic and sophisticated, with tailoring details on upholstery, elegant finishes and striking colors.

Astronomers rap Little Rock for defeating light pollution bill - March 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Central Arkansas Astronomical Society has issued a statement blaming the city of Little Rock and the Arkansas Municipal League for defeat of HB 1003, which would have strengthened regulation of outdoor lighting. It would have, among others, required shielding on new lights.

The group said in a statement:

The careless use of poorly designed and unnecessary outdoor lighting has veiled the natural night sky over most of our state and removed the universe in which we live from our daily lives. A naturally dark sky has become so rare that some states, to include neighboring Texas, have created dark sky parks where people can witness the universe they live in. It is estimated that fewer than eight out of ten persons reaching adulthood in this country today have ever seen the Milky Way.

But there is more to this issue than esthetics. Light that goes up into the sky is wasted light and wasted money, often public money, a waste of the energy source used, often a needless source of air pollution and green house gas emissions, and impacts wildlife, particularly nocturnal species, while proper lighting is safer and more effective lighting.

It is unfortunate that instead of educating themselves on this subject and following the lead of other cities around the country and even a few here in Arkansas, the league and the city of Little Rock have chosen to be guided by inertia, resisting what they should be leading.

LED Lighting Company D2 LED Lighting and Design Completes the Largest LED Retrofit in VIC, Australia - March 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) March 12, 2015

The founders of D2 LED Lighting and Design, an LED lighting company based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, are proud to announce that they have just completed the largest LED retrofit project in late 2014.

Along with their client CitiPower/Powercor, the friendly and experienced team from DTwo.com.au completed the 11 site upgrade with new high-quality and energy saving D2 LED lights. As a company spokesperson noted, the lighting that was used in the project was installed to full Australian AS1158 and AS1680 compliance standards.

Installation occurred throughout metro and regional Victoria. Amazingly, the 11 sites were completed from concept to installation in just 3 months with a full turnkey solution.

D2 LED Lighting and Design, a company that prides themselves on offering LED lighting that Australian businesses can rely on, provided many different services for this comprehensive project, including lighting audits, lighting design, lighting installation and maintenance. They also worked with their valued business partner, Leighton Property Management, who, the company spokesperson noted is one of Australias most recognized and successful infrastructure companies.

D2 LED Lighting and Designs project will provide a host of benefits to CitiPower/Powercor, the spokesperson added. In addition to over $3 million in energy cost savings, the project will reduce overall lighting energy consumption by over 60 percent. The 11 sites will also significantly increase security at the locations and automate the outdoor lighting process.

The spokesman also mentioned that D2 LED was used to generate the Carbon Certificates under the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (VEET) scheme that provided CitiPower/Powercor with a cash incentive, reducing the cost of upgrading to LED lighting.

Overall, this was a perfect project, with an optimal outcome for all involved, said Robbie Habib, Finance Manager for D2 LED Lighting and Design.

James Gray, the Sales Manager for D2 LED Lighting and Design said the project represents D2 LEDs strong growth in the Victorian, Australian Market; D2 LED has been experiencing continued exponential growth for years now and also continue to gain significant market share in the lighting industry and in the growth segment of LED lighting, he said.
