Great Yarmouths Haven Bridge will be closed every night for eight weeks as essential maintenance work is carried out.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The bridge will be shut from 7pm to 6am from the beginning of February to allow for the 230,000 worth of work to be carried out.

Throughout this period it will remain open to pedestrians but cars will be diverted via North Quay and Breydon Bridge and Pasteur Road.

Contractors will be replacing an area of timber blocks, which form the running surface on the bridge on the eastern section - which lifts - as well as the supporting timbers.

The deck surface repairs are being carried out under a separate contract to the bridge painting works, which are currently in progress. The painting work is being done from beneath the bridge and is not affecting motorists.

Both schemes are being managed by Eastport acting on behalf of Norfolk County Council, which owns the bridge.

The work is due to start on, or as soon as possible after, Monday, February 2.

Renovations at Longview depot slow to complete - January 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Scaffolding used to put stucco on the ceiling sits unused in the open air pavilion at Longviews historical train depot. It is one of several projects that has remained uncompleted in the eight months since the depots grand opening.

Unexpected problems installing drainage and difficulty getting a Fort Worth contractor to finish its work are behind the slow grind finishing the renovations of the citys depot.

City Architect Brent Brevard said Mega Contractors in Fort Worth has missed its deadline to complete the project. Originally, the company was given a year from January 2013, but complications with the drainage to prevent flooding of the basement allowed the completion date to be pushed back.

It is substantially complete now. It is serving its intended purposed, but the contractor still has something that they have to come back and do, Brevard said.

We have had difficulty getting the contractor to come back. They did a big push to get to May 10 for the grand opening.

The May dedication of the depot was a huge event for the city, bringing in dignitaries with the railroad system and symbolically marking the end of renovations of the Texas Historic Landmark and Local Historical Landmark.

But Brevard said last week that the hot water heater for the facility has not been connected, nor has an air conditioning system for the basement. Additionally, work on the roof of the pavilion and finishing details such as painting, doors and door hardware are waiting to be completed.

We are holding 5 percent retainage on $1.8 million; so, we are holding a lot of money, Brevard said.

The City Council unanimously approved the contract with Mega Contractors in November 2012.

A representative for Mega Contractors was unable to be reached for contact.

Waltham Lido Pool to reopen - January 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Waltham Lido Pool is reopening on Saturday 17 January, with a Welcome Back Waltham pool party on Sunday 18 January.

The Christchurch City Council facility would attract more than 17,000 people each summer before its closure due to earthquake damage. Facilities include a shallow water lido leisure area for young children, a toddlers' pool, a lane pool for lap swimming, a hydro-slide and a landscaped, grassed BBQ space.

David Adamson, the Councils Director Council Facilities and Infrastructure Rebuild, says the pools reopening is an exciting event that the community has been waiting a long time for.

"Wed scheduled a soft opening for Monday 12 January, but some minor hiccups have meant weve moved it to Saturday 17. Needless to say, people in the area know what a great facility this is, and for them Sundays pool party has been a long time coming. Weve had more than 70 people down there this week working hard to have things ready in time for it. The pool looks tremendous and it is credit to the contractors, consultants, staff and subcontractors who have worked tirelessly right through the Christmas break.

"As well as fixing and strengthening the pool, weve taken the opportunity to revamp things a bit, and make effective use of recycled materials," Mr Adamson says.

"In addition to the upgrades - new signage, landscaping, roofing, re-sizing the plant room, fencing, painting, shade sails and other small improvements - weve included the old reception desk from the Lyttelton service centre as well as wall brackets from QEII Park.

"The resulting refurbished pool will be something the community and Council can be proud of."

Sponsors MORE FM and Streets will be at the party with giveaways, competitions and prizes to keep the kids entertained. Details of all the summer pool parties will be broadcast on MORE FM (92.1FM).

People who fell from Commerce Casino were painters, fire officials say - January 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The five people injured Saturday after falling from Commerce Casino were painters who hit the pavement after scaffolding gave way, fire officials said Sunday.

The workers were painting the casino around 3:20 p.m. Saturday, when they fell about 15 feet, officials said. The painters suffered minor injuries including scrapes, but were doing well after being taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, said Capt. Mark Roberts, of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

They were sitting up and talking to us, said Roberts, who responded to the call from Station 50. It could have been horrible, but it wasnt.

Roberts said he believed the painters were contractors. A spokeswoman for Commerce Casino, which includes a 200-room hotel, declined to comment to the Los Angeles Times on Saturday. Representatives did not immediately return a phone message on Sunday.
