PASADENA (KABC) -- One of Pasadena's great estates will open its doors to visitors this Sunday for the 50th Annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design to raise money for music.

Volunteer designers made over the interior and exterior of an English-style country estate built in 1915 for $28,000.

Designers "volunteer their time, their talents, their resources," said Mary Anne Clayton of the Pasadena Showcase House. "The money that we make goes to support our music program."

Over the years, the event has raised $19 million for the arts.

More than 30,000 ticket holders will visit the Flint House, named for the original owners who commissioned Southern California architect Stiles O. Clements, whose work includes the El Capitan Theater and Malibu's Adamson House.

An interior designer gave the salon a new lease on life by covering the black, paneled walls, creating the furniture and fixtures and commissioning the art.

The kitchen was comprised of six rooms until the interior designer Cynthia Bennett knocked down the walls, bringing in details like the stove's steel hood with a sheet iron overlay.

"We want everybody to be in the space. So seeing all these closed up rooms, it was also very dark and I just wanted to open it up," said Bennett of Cynthia Bennett and Associates.

There's also a kitchen outside with appliances for barbecuing and a pop-up TV in a waterproof case. The pool nearby got a complete makeover, complete with dancing waters.

The 3.5-acre estate with a lily pond is framed by an outdoor patio that's more like a living room.

RENO, NV - The owners of a Spanish Springs home had every reason to believe their dogs were safe and secure when they left them Saturday morning.

But they returned to a horrible sight; their Shih Tzu lay dead on their living room floor, their Pekingese just inside the home and their black lab in a bathroom, the pit bulls standing over her.

After tearing through three fences, the pit bulls had entered the home through the dog door.

Experts at Washoe Animal Services say that detail is unusual, but they have seen it before.

"Last year we had some incidents out in the Spanish Springs area where coyotes were jumping fences and in a couple of instances went through a dog door and killed pets inside," says Animal Services Field Supervisor Bobby Smith.

Smith says it's more common to see skunks and raccoons use a dog door to enter a home.

They can offer human intruders access as well.

"It's fairly common, yes," says Reno Police Officer Tim Broadway. "I would say two or three times a month we get reports that a home has been burglarized through a dog door."

Neither man, however, would tell you not to install one of these doors. They say you should do your homework and use the locking security doors when needed.

"Look at the customer reviews for strength," says Broadway. "Look at the available products, the metal doors to cover them up to keep anybody from making entry."

The peace and quiet in the millionaires' enclave home to Harry Redknapp, former players Graeme Souness and Darren Anderton, Ian McGlinn, the Body Shop investor, and until recently cricketer Geoffrey Boycott was once only disturbed by the occasional car alarm or foxes knocking over bins.

That was until several of the multi-million pound holiday homes that lie empty for half of the year were made available to let out for up to 1,000 a night.

Now those who have worked so hard to retire in what they hoped was a peaceful neighbourhood have their weekends ruined by groups of up to 30 partying till dawn, Mr Syms said.

Calling for a tightening up of legislation to deal with noise nuisance, he told a Westminster Hall debate: Constituents are fearful on Friday afternoon to have a look at these homes and see the number of cars which have come in. They pray for rain because people stay inside rather than stay outside; they know there's going to be anti-social behaviour."

One resident complained about returning with his seven-year-old daughter, "to find that the house next door had blow-up dolls brought from a sex shop all the way around the veranda" and another about "prostitutes being delivered well into the night", Mr Syms said.

As he called for local authorities to be given more power to deal with the issues, neighbours of the five and six bedroom properties on the Sandbanks peninsula and in the neighbouring suburbs of Canford Cliffs and Branksome Park spoke of their dread the weekends, saying some go and stay with family or friends while others bunker themselves inside for 48 hours.

Jen Cameron, 35, and husband Stephen, a 54-year-old IT consultant, have nine party properties within five miles of their home, including one next door, which has led to an onslaught of noise and alcohol-fuelled behaviour.

Mrs Cameron says most are owned by divorced men trying to make the most of their assets, who are money making at the expense of local residents' sleep.

The groups descend on a Friday afternoon and the vino starts flowing, Mrs Cameron said.

"We have seen naked butlers serving drinks to groups of women in the garden as well as strippers for the male groups.
