Public wants smoking banned at parks, patios: survey - May 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CTV Winnipeg Published Friday, May 30, 2014 6:13AM CST Last Updated Friday, May 30, 2014 6:51PM CST

Ahead of World No Tobacco Day, a new survey shows most Manitobans support a ban on smoking in public places.

The survey, conducted by Prairie Research Associates for the Manitoba Tobacco Reduction Alliance (MANTRA), found that about that 67 per cent of Manitobans want smokers to butt out on patios at restarants and bars. That number is up from 58 per cent in 2008.

It also showed a majority of Manitobans support extending a ban to beaches, public parks, green spaces and outdoor events.

Province orders Manitobans to butt-out on beaches

Parents at Assiniboine Park told CTV News on Friday it's time to bring in the ban at our parks, saying there is no place for smoking around children. One mother who smokes agreed that the smoking ban should be extended.

The province announced earlier this month that it will ban smoking on all beaches in provincial parks, starting this summer. That's set to take effect June 21.

According to MANTRA, eight in 10 Manitobans feel that current smoking restrictions make their community a better place to live.

World No Tobacco Day takes place every year on May 31. The World Health Organization is calling for countries across the globe to raise taxes on cigarettes.

WINNIPEG A growing majority of Winnipeggers iscalling for smoking to be banned on public patios, a new poll shows.

67% support extending smoking bans to outdoor patios of restaurants and bars, an increase from 58% in 2008, says the survey obtained exclusively by Global News Thursday.

One thing we want to do is show that (a smoking ban)has public support, said Murray Gibson from the Manitoba Tobacco Reduction Alliance, which plans to release more poll results on smoking bans Friday.

Manitobas2004 Non-Smokers Health Protection Act banned smoking in all enclosed public places and indoor workplaces, but did not apply to outdoor eating and drinking areas.

The province doesnt plan on changing that law anytime soon, Manitobas Healthy Living Minister told Global News Thursday.

Ithink its one of those things we have to consider and we have to do things incrementally, but at this point, most people seem to be satisfied with the way things are, Sharon Blady said.

A Winnipeg city councillor seemed more open to the idea.

We may be moving now to a place where we should talk about that for the patio, I think thats a debate we should have, said Brian Mayes (St. Vital).

Outdoor dining is in season at these popular Parma patios - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PARMA, Ohio At long last, warm weather is here, which means outdoor dining season is back.

With the recent bump in temperatures, diners are flocking to patios at restaurants around Parma.

Here are some of the city's more popular outdoor dining locations.

Tradesman Tavern, 5746 State Road, 440-888-2337: This attractive patio has been a favorite gathering place in the city for about a decade, said Michelle Ipavec, tavern manager.

"Business has been phenomenal. We were packed Memorial Day weekend," She said.

The patio was designed by David Martina, a stone mason. It features high brick walls with decorative metalwork. There is a big TV behind the bar so diners can view sports or other programs. The patio has full bar and food service.

Ipavec said the patio can accommodate about 60-70 people, with another 10-12 seats at the bar. Music from the jukebox can be heard outside and Ipavec said sometimes a DJ will play or they have booked acoustic musicians. She said a cigar club meets on Wednesday nights from about 7 until midnight on the patio.

Tradesman hours are 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday; closed Sunday.

Corleone's Ristorante & Bar, 5669 Broadview Road, 216-741-0220: The patio at Corleone's Ristorante & Bar is spacious and inviting. Large, colorful, mural-like paintings decorate the outside brick wall behind the bar area. Tables can accommodate about 90 outdoor diners, said Debbie Suvak, a manager of the restaurant.

It's still a little early in the outdoor dining season, but Suvak said customers enjoy eating on the patio when weather permits. She said the patio, designed by John Goodworth of Medina, opened in 2007.

5 easy patio nibbles for sunny days - May 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Calgary'scrab apple trees and lilacs are finally starting to bloom, coaxing everyone out into their backyards.

On sunny days, restaurant patios are packed, but if you have your own at home, its a perfect spot to gather, and the place spur of the moment gettogethers are often the most likely to happen.

Here are five easy snacks to pull together that require very little cooking time and minimal dishes afterwards.

Marinated goat cheese in garlicky herbed olive oil quickly became my go-to party snack; its perfect any time of year, but particularly great when I have fresh herbs at the ready on my windowsill. Its wonderful with soft, spreadable goat cheese - but would be fab over a chunk of feta too, roasted in the oven or in a small cast iron skillet on the grill. Adapted from Gourmet:

Combine the oil, garlic, pepper and herbs in a small jar; keep in the fridge until youre ready for it, then remove the lid, microwave the jar for 20 to 30 seconds, until the oil is hot, then pour over the goat cheese.

Serve immediately with crusty bread or crackers. Serves eight.

You cant get much easier than this. To make warmed dates, heat a generous drizzle of good olive oil in a medium skillet, add as many Medjool dates (the big, juicy ones with the pits you find in the produce section) as you like along with a sprig or two of fresh rosemary.

Heat them through, shaking the pan until they darken in spots and get soft. Transfer to a plate, pour over the warm olive oil overtop and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.

These sweet, slightly savoury dates are delicious on their own andeven better with wine and a few chunks of cheese.
