Controlling moss growth on your patio is no easy feat, but there's a surprising kitchen ingredient that can work wonders when it comes to removing the green clumps:
Moss is particularly fond of the gaps in paving slabs, but removing it can be challenging (even with the right tools). However, the acetic acid found in vinegar, a traditional cleaning solution, can effectively remove moss from brick structures, driveways or paths.
'Vinegar is a relatively cheap and easy method to remove moss from pavers. The acetic acid in the vinegar can kill the moss on your pavers,' an expert from Harwood's Garden Supplies told The Express. 'For the best results, use white vinegar with a solution of about five per cent. However, for a more potent option try a six per cent cleaning vinegar solution.'
Getting your garden ready for spring? Here's how to use white vinegar to banish moss:
    1. Before you begin, dab a small amount of white vinegar on a corner of your moss-covered paving slab. This will help determine whether you need to use it neat or diluted with water. For heavier breakouts, you may need to pour the vinegar directly onto the moss.
    2. Once you have covered the affected area with vinegar, let it sit for around one hour. Then take an old scrubbing brush and firmly scrub the moss away. Thanks to the vinegar, it should break away easily.
    3. Finally, fill a bucket with soapy water to rinse away any remaining moss. A pressure washer will also work well here, removing moss that may need a final blast. Your outdoor space will look as good as new.

Nothing says the arrival of Spring quite like a weatherbeaten patio. All that effort you put in last year (or always intended to) so as to make the most stylish alfresco space possible, bashed around by rain, snow and general neglect. Which is why, as days get a little longer and our desire to live beautifully outdoors returns, we need to know the ways to revive a patio after winter, little tricks that make a big difference.
Which is why we've asked our favorite landscape and garden designers, what they do to patios right now, this month. how they spruce up the paved areas of backyards in order to make them visually appeal once more.
From pruning and potting up new plants to welcoming wildlife and accessorizing, find out how to return a lackluster patio to its Spring/Summer glory.

It's not just our homes that require a spring clean, but outside spaces do too. From languishing leaves and other debris to dead plants and muddy footprints, dirt builds up. A good sweep and wash down of your decking, tiles or stone flooring (with eco-friendly dish soap and hot water) will revitalise it.Consider whether the weather is fine enough to remove bulky furniture covers too.
'Early spring is also a good time of year to clean and care for your outdoor furniture,' says New York-based Kat Aul Cervoni, landscape designer and founder of Staghorn NYC and The Cultivation by Kat.
'Metal furniture is easily sprayed off with a hose (if need be), or wiped down with a damp cloth. For wooden furniture, I like to clean these off with a stiff brush, hose and mild, diluted soap. Its also good to use an oil or conditioner on your wooden furniture once a year, so now is a good time to apply that once its completely dry.'
'I like to declutter the patio area and make it light,' says Miami-based landscape designer, Rituparna Simlai, founder, Studio Arth. 'The spring season resonates with light and a minimalist ambience, so remove all that is not necessary and let the space flow.'
Plants can look a bit tatty after winter, and whilst we welcome a wild look, some trees, plants and grasses may need trimming and pruning.
'One of the first things I do to refresh my patio in early spring is to cut back any remaining dead or spent growth from the previous year,' says Kat Aul Cervoni.
'This is particularly important for most ornamental grasses, such as pennisetum, miscanthus, sporobolus, panicum and hakonechloa. The exception is Mexican feather grass, which should be combed out to remove old growth.
'Any lingering dead perennial growth should also be pruned back to about 1-2 at this time as well to allow for fresh new growth to come through.'
'I'll also do some shaping to evergreen shrubs like ilex and boxwood that have any wayward growth from the previous fall. Other woody plants like lavender, panicle hydrangeas, butterfly bush and smokebush also do well with pruning at this time of year.'
Even with the best of care, it is likely you may have lost a plant or two in cold or windy weather. So once you've looked around to see what needs trimming, pruning or composting, consider what else to introduce to the pots on your patio.
'Refreshing your patio or backyard with accent pollinator species will not only add color but will animate your garden too,' says Riturparna Simlai. 'Choose native species with nectar-rich flowers that provide food sources for pollinators such as hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.' Our guide to the best flowers for bees will help you here.
'A combination of plants in a pot, with a low flowering bed in the bottom instead of pebbles, some accent plants in the base that contrast with the flowering bed and a sculptural tree off centre will enhance the look and liven the space making it more than just a potted plant.'
'I love potted plants around a patio to bring color, dimension and seasonality to the space,' says Kat Aul Cervoni. 'While I keep simple boxwoods in some, I like using seasonal annuals in others for a more colorful arrangement that can be switched out and adjusted throughout the seasons.
'For early season color while its still a bit cold, I love pansies, violets and violas which can handle the colder temperatures much like spring-flowering bulbs.'
'Install a bird bath to provide a water source for local birds and butterflies,' says Rituparna. 'As well as enticing them to visit, it will add a charming touch to your spring garden.'
If you have a bird bath already, give it a good scrub and fill it with fresh water. Add a couple of large rocks for birds to perch on, as it can help protect them from predators. Or consider installing a second or third bird bath on or near your patio.
These sculptural pieces are decorative, low-maintenance and provide a lifeline to feathered friends.
If it's warm enough where you live to remove outdoor furniture covers and clean tables and seating for use, it's time to bring accessories out of storage too.
'Springtime means warmer weather is on the way, so cushions for outdoor furniture can be brought out of storage,' says Kat. 'I wash any machine-washable cushion covers or use a stiff brush to clean off any dust gathered over winter.'
'Decking lighting plays a crucial rule in creating the right ambience with changes in the weather,' says Rituparna. 'Moving from an inviting and warm ambience of lanterns and string lights in the winter to a more romantic setting with accent pendant lights hanging off of large trees or the pergola is ideal in the spring.
'Introducing pillows with vibrant spring colors or floral pattens enhances the celebratory and uplifting mood of the spring season too.'

Especially in moist environments or on patios that don't get much sunlight and thus hold onto water from snow or rain for a long time, mold and other types of growth are unfortunately common. Mold can grow anywhere with moisture and a food source, which can be as simple and harmless as a bit of dust. While patios are usually a positive indicator of home value, the desirability of this feature is quickly undercut if it becomes a breeding ground for mold.
Since mold travels easily through air particles and on shoes, it can quickly spread indoors and cause health risks if left unchecked in your outdoor living spaces. Therefore, even when it's found outside on a patio, it requires a fast response to ensure it doesn't end up inside your home. For those planning to list their house for sale soon, the strong negative connotations, the unsightly appearance, and the risk of spread that comes with the presence of mold can knock home value down substantially. Many buyers exercise an abundance of caution when facing a potential mold problem. Before you take listing photos or begin showing your home to potential buyers, thoroughly clean your patio to rid it of mold completely and take caution to prevent its growth in the future.

Q: How do I choose the right patio loveseat for my outdoor space?
A: When choosing a patio loveseat, consider the size and style of your outdoor space. Measure the area to ensure that the loveseat will fit comfortably. Also, think about the materials and design that will complement your existing outdoor decor. Look for durable materials such as wicker or metal, and opt for weather-resistant cushions to ensure longevity.
Q: How do I maintain my patio loveseat?
A: To keep your patio loveseat looking great, clean it regularly with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the finish. If your loveseat has cushions, store them indoors in a dry place when not in use to prevent moisture damage. Additionally, consider covering your loveseat during inclement weather to protect it from the elements.
Q: Can I use my patio loveseat indoors?
A: Yes, patio loveseats can be used indoors as well as outdoors. They can be a great addition to a sunroom, screened porch, or other indoor/outdoor space. Keep in mind that some patio loveseats may have a more casual or rustic design that may not be suitable for all indoor decor styles. When using a patio loveseat indoors, consider adding accent pillows or throws to make it feel more cozy and inviting.
Q: What materials are common for patio loveseats?
A:Popular patio loveseat materials include wicker, metal, and wood. Opt for weather-resistant options to enhance durability and protect against the elements. This ensures your outdoor seating not only looks stylish but also withstands various weather conditions for long-lasting enjoyment.
Q: Are patio loveseats easy to assemble?
A:Assembling patio loveseats is typically hassle-free. Most models provide straightforward instructions and require minimal assembly. Enjoy a stress-free setup, allowing you to quickly and easily transform your outdoor space into a comfortable and inviting haven without the need for complicated assembly processes.
After conducting a thorough review of several patio loveseats, we can confidently say that there are a variety of attractive options on the market. From wicker and all-weather rattan to sleek aluminum designs, there is a style for every taste. Additionally, many of these loveseats feature comfortable cushions and other thoughtful details such as retractable side trays, footstools with storage, and more. Overall, we believe that investing in a quality patio loveseat is a smart choice for anyone looking to elevate their outdoor space and enjoy more time in the fresh air.

Springfield restaurants offer outdoor dining during winter with heated patios - Standard Online

Restaurant patios in Toronto are reeling from a recent enforcement blitz from public health officials.
What started out as a complaint about a blocked fire hydrant back in December turned into a myriad of inspections, notices to comply and notices of violation, co-owner of Cafe Diplomatico, Rocco Mastrangelo Jr. told the Star.
We were using our patio as a way to keep ourselves viable, open, paying our bills, and not laying off staff, he said.
On Jan. 14, Mastrangelo said he was given three different violations or orders to comply. One for the fire hydrant being obstructed, one for not having two sides of their patio open and a third for issues with their gas heaters, which were later fixed, according to Mastrangelo.
After a meeting on Thursday, the Cafe Diplomatico shut down its patio until it is able to fully reopen.
The health department, they want two sides (of the patio) open. Or if you have a retractable roof you have to have the roof open and one side open. Its minus 20 outside so basically its useless, said Mastrangelo.
He said the latest installation of heaters on their patio cost $80,000, which are now out of use due to the closure. The entire patio structure, he said, cost the restaurant over $200,000.
Mr. Ford, he says that were in it together. Were not in this together. Its only certain industries that had to take the brunt of this lockdown and restrictions. It seems like for whatever reason its always in the hospitality industry, he said.
St. Clair Wests Atomic10 is another restaurant among those affected. Earlier this month, the iconic Latin American restaurant was classified as being too enclosed by public health officials, co-owner Anna Canzona told the Star.
The officials asked the owners to either close the patio, or take down two full sides, which include Plexiglas panels as well as wooden barriers, according to Canzona.
We offered to remove the Plexiglas, but those wooden barriers are structurally integral to the patio, so they decided to shutter, Canzona said.
The official rules, according to the Reopening Ontario Act, are as follows:
If an outdoor dining area is covered, at least two sides of the area must be open to the outdoors and must not be substantially blocked by any walls or other impermeable physical barriers. And if it has a retractable roof, when its retracted, at least one side of the area must open to the outdoors and not be blocked.
But Canzona said they were not aware of the two-sides-fully open rule.
When they closed indoor dining, they said that patios would be allowed to operate. So we did continue to operate, not knowing that there were guidelines, Canzona said.
In response to questions by the Star, Toronto Public Health reiterated the outdoor dining rules outlined in the Reopening Ontario Act.
The City continues to work with businesses to educate them, help them understand the regulations and be in the compliance, said an emailed statement sent Sunday.
Staff from Toronto Public Health continue to respond to complaints and conduct inspections to ensure businesses are following the requirements under the ROA, including the patio requirements.
Matt Park, co-owner of Burdock Brewery, said that his restaurant was also visited by public health officials. Similar to Canzona, Park was told that lifting their rollable walls was not enough, and that their fences must also be removed.
Its a waist height fence, and that apparently isnt considered completely open even though the walls are completely up. Theres air blowing through and its still freezing, Park said.
The regulations say the two openings must not be substantially blocked by any walls or other impermeable physical barriers.
If you look at the definition of permeable, permeable is that gases and liquids could pass through it. Our fence has holes in it. Its not like a sealed airtight barrier.
Despite this, Burdock Brewery says it was given a letter from public health ordering them to comply, or they could risk fines.
Park said they have been in contact with their city councillor and public health, but it has been difficult to get clear answers on how they can keep the restaurant open to keep their staff employed and pay their bills.
By no means are we wanting to contravene public bylaws. We just want to know what they are, said Park.
This comes as the food and beverage industry in the province has already been through the mill in recent weeks, due to COVID-19 restrictions throttling capacities at eateries.
Although restrictions are set to ease on Jan. 31, restaurants are still uncertain about their future. Canzona is taking contingency steps, by getting two food trucks up and going.
We just dont know whats going to happen next. So were trying to prepare ourselves in case there is another lockdown, Canzona said.
Hopefully nothing changes from now until then.
