With the extra time indoors and budgets tight, "Do It Yourself" projects can be a great way to pass time, upgrade your home and distract you from the stress associated with a changed way of life due to COVID-19.

With all this in mind, my family decided to tackle a backyard DIY landscaping project -- and lucky for us, our neighbor, Isaiah Brazytis, is a professional landscaper.

BIGGEST DIY LANDSCAPING MISTAKES

Brazytis is a maintenance supervisor at LeafStone Landscapes out of Walton Hills. He says the biggest DIY lawn mistakes Northeast Ohioans make are planting things that deer like to eat and taking on a project too big to handle.

PROFESSIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR WIGGINS FAMILY

After looking over our lawn with my husband, Chris, Brazytis recommended we clean up our flower beds, lay down mulch and put in a path from the side of the garage to the driveway. The path would give us a spot for our grill that's not so close to the garage.

Our budget for the project was $400.

My kids and I are not good at landscaping, so Chris did most of the work through hail, snow and rain during this week-long April project.

Even though we did go over budget (spending a little more than $500), the entire family was proud of how the patio, walkway and landscaping turned out.

Daddy, didnt do a good job, said my 9-year-old, Christen. He did amazing!

Although we made the mistake of making upgrades that we didnt budget for, Brazytis told us that if we had hired a professional to complete the same project, our cost would have doubled. Needless to say, we didnt mind spending the extra $100 to get what we wanted.

Given our current circumstances, this could be a good time to consider some quick and easy updates for your patio, porch or deck to make them more attractive and welcoming for increased usage. Evaluating your outdoor living spaces to see what improvements are needed can make your unintended staycation more enjoyable for the duration.

THE new High Sheriff of Cumbria has officially taken on the role in a virtual ceremony held from her garden patio.

Julie Barton was due to be installed in a huge event at Barrow Town Hall but with the coronavirus pandemic she instead held a small gathering at home in Ulverston with people attending via the video calling platform Skype.

The Lord-Lieutenant Claire Hensman, the Undersheriff Tim Cartmell, Julies son Joseph and a few others all took part in the gathering although they werent there in person.

All Skype guests were dressed in suits and Claire wore a lovely hat, said Julie.

I could see them all on the screen as I made my declaration.

Present in person - although socially distancing - were outgoing High Sheriff Marcia Reid Fotheringham, Canon Paul Embery, chaplain and parish priest in Ulverston and Dalton, and Les Johnson, a Justice of the Peace.

Fr Paul brought the church lectern to add to the formality - well he did ask if he could bring anything! said Julie.

It was not the 200 people planned but it went well nonetheless.

Peter, my husband stood in and read a paper on behalf of Claire Hensman and our younger son, John, who was back home from university, stood in and read the script in the place of the Undersheriff.

My older son, Joseph stayed online after the ceremony to join us for a virtual fizz and canapes reception.

He and Lucy, his partner, had their own at home, and we virtually chinked glasses and toasted the occasion.

All very 21st century and special but it does mean I must be one of the only High Sheriffs in the country to have actually been able to hold an installation.

The ceremony was held before the UK-wide lockdown was announced last Monday.

Since then, of course guidelines have changed. I am very lucky! said Julie.

Marcia Reid Fotheringham, who had been the High Sheriff for Cumbria for the last 12 months, began her Cumbrian journey in 1997, when, at the age of 43, she made the bold step of moving from the Boston area of the USA to Brampton to live with Jim Fotheringham who she later married.

Marcias time in the role has been full of highlights.

I dont have a favourite one, I value each thing, she said.

I am impressed and bowled over by the army of volunteers, who I refer to as the Angels of Cumbria. Many of them they dont want anything, they could be more appreciated. Saying thank you is a huge thing that they all deserve and dont all get a lot of. I was amazed by their strength, commitment and determination.

There are some amazing people that just give, give and give some more.

Marcia, who is also a magistrate, has herself given back during her time as High Sheriff.

I have raised a lot of money in the past, brought American musicians here to play and its worked out really well doing that kind of thing, she said.

The 65-year-old has been overwhelmed with the support from people in the county.

Cumbria has been great.

One thing you see on the door is appreciation.

Cumbrians are amazingly determined, amazingly generous and big hearted.

Volunteers just go about helping others, supporting the NHS, paying for classes or services whatever an army of fantastic volunteers.

Marcia also runs Alston Dental Practice alongside husband Jim and has previously worked in family therapy and psychology in Carlisle.

Reflecting on her life so far, Marcia said: In every chapter I never knew how it was going to turn out. I have appreciation at the way it did.

My life has given me some amazing things. I would never expect I would have the memory of being High Sheriff.

I have great pride for the work I have done. I am very proud. I have regret as both parents passed on, as I know both loved taking the credit for me and everything I had done.

A man who climbed onto a second-storey apartment balcony in Abbotsford a year ago and set a barbecue on fire has been sentenced to three days in jail and three years of probation.

Michael Rodden, 32, pleaded guilty to a charge of arson, while a mischief charge was stayed during sentencing on March 20 in Abbotsford provincial court.

The incident took place on March 24, 2019 in the 2600 block of Ware Street while a family including a two-year-old boy was sleeping in their apartment.

The family heard a huge smash on their patio and thought someone was breaking into their home.

When they rushed toward their patio, they saw that their living room window was smashed and that Rodden was babbling and yelling.

The family then noticed that their barbecue was on fire, with flames so high they were touching the ceiling. The blaze caused the glass panels on the patio to explode.

They grabbed a jug from their water cooler and dumped it on the flames.

Meanwhile, Rodden had jumped onto their neighbours patio, and a passing off-duty police officer called in the fire.

Members of Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and the Abbotsford Police Department arrived on scene, and Rodden was arrested.

According to the provincial court database, Rodden has numerous past convictions for offences such as possession of stolen property, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, uttering threats, stealing vehicles, break-and-enter, robbery, unlawful confinement, possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, possession of child pornography, mischief, and breaching his bail and probation conditions.

The convictions date back to 2006 and most of them occurred in Abbotsford.

Rodden was the subject of a police notice in July 2017, when he was wanted by the Mission RCMP on three warrants. He was arrested the following month.
