Fowler Pest Control & Termites: honest, reliable - September 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Thursday, September 4th, 2014 Issue 36, Volume 18.

Fowler Pest Control and Termites has a longstanding reputation for honest and reliable service. Owner Glen Fowler has been in the industry for 30 years, and has operated his family business for over 20 years. With the help of his wife Karen, son Michael, brother-in-law Chuck, and daughters Molly and Maggi, Fowlers successful pest control has become a resource used by many families.

As a result of the growth of Fowlers company, they now have 17 service vehicles and cover San Diego, Riverside, Orange, and San Bernardino counties, although half of their business is still in Fallbrook, where Fowler was raised.

Some of the pests that Fowler Pest Control & Termites treat are: fleas, ticks, earwigs, roaches, wasps, bees, ants, mice, silverfish, sow bugs, spiders, rats, crickets, termites (subterranean and dry-rot), and pigeons.

Fowler uses bait technology, which approaches the insect problem with plant-derived alternatives, as opposed to the harsh chemicals the industry originally used, which are now banned. Bait technology has actually proven to be a more effective method since the insect must pass through the bait; it then brings it back to its colony, whereas the previous method using dangerous chemicals did not extinguish the insects at their source.

"Weather patterns have a lot to do with change in activity," explained Glen Fowler. "When things get stirred up, especially when the weather is abnormal for that time of year, we tend to see an increase in cases. Africanized bees are increasing in population, and are much more Advertisement [ Christ the King Lutheran Church ] aggressive than domestic bees."

Fowler mentioned that the worst thing one can do if being chased by a swarm of bees is to jump into a pool, for they will just keep summoning more bees from the hive. Instead, it is best to get into a safe, sheltered area.

For the last five years, Fowler has also been aiding clients with gopher and squirrel problems, which have increased dramatically.

When it comes to needed bird control, Fowler tends to use exclusionary techniques such as spikes to deter the animals, rather than trapping.

All of the technicians at Fowler Pest Control & Termites constantly update their education through quarterly and annual training classes and are professionally certified by the Pest Control Board of California. One of the reason employees are loyal to Fowler is the time and education that is invested in each technician.

Leasing Keeps Pest Control Fleet Up-to-Date - September 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    September 04, 2014

The VW Beetle is one of several different types of vehicles in Bug Doctor's fleet. Each white-covered fleet vehicle includes several company logos.

For New Jersey-based Bug Doctor Termite & Pest Control, expanding its services to new states means growth in employees as well as fleet. With 32 vehicles and counting, Bug Doctor now serves customers in five pest control divisions, each with specific fleet needs.

Stuart Aust, owner and president, started Bug Doctor Termite & Pest Control with his wife as a mom-and-pop operation in Paramus, N.J., in 1992.

As the business grew, Aust expanded his companys reach into other pest control divisions. In 1996, Bird Doctor was born. Three divisions soon followed: Mosquito Doctor, Animal Doctor (trapping of skunks, raccoons, squirrels) and Bedbug Doctor.

In 2009, Bug Doctor took one of its divisions nationwide. With its other pest control divisions mainly serving customers in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, Bird Doctor Nationwide now has customers as far as Texas and California.

Currently, Bug Doctor is averaging a revenue increase of 10% to 12% each year, says Aust. In the face of such growth, how does Bug Doctor manage the challenges of fleet?

    A Diverse and Customized Fleet

With an expanding reach, Bug Doctor needs a reliable and up-to-date fleet. Aust decided to start leasing his vehicles instead of buying them. Cycling fleet every three years not only keeps maintenance costs in check, We found that gives our brand a clean and fresh look, he says.

Although each fleet vehicle wears the color white, Bug Doctors fleet is made up of several different types of vehicles. The trucks are broken down by division: 13 trucks for Bug Doctor, 10 trucks for Bird Doctor Nationwide, one for Animal Doctor and one for Bedbug Doctor.

Exotic spider-like crickets now common in Piedmont Triad homes - September 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A study released by researchers at North Carolina State University shows Asian camel crickets are now common in homes across the United States.

Pest control experts in the Piedmont Triad say the exotic insects tend to live in dark, damp spaces. They do not bite or sting, but they leave behind a mess.

Theyre honestly very creepy. They jump very far; they dont have a lot of control over where theyre jumping or what theyre jumping toward. They look a lot like spiders and they move like spiders, except when theyre jumping, said Chase Hazelwood, with Go-Forth Pest Control.

The NC State study says Asian camel crickets are now more common than native crickets. The insects are scavengers, so they eat things like fungus and other insects.

Pest Control companies can take care of cricket infestations, but there are also some easy ways to take care of the problem yourself with glue boards or insect bait.

If you can get one caught on [a glue board], it will send out pheromone signals that will attract other camel crickets to the glue board as well. Its a very simple technique, said Hazelwood.

Other tricks include keeping crawl space vents open and keeping dark spaces in the house clean and dry.

Got Geese? Start Controlling Them Now - September 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 02, 2014

The Canada goose is one of the most common North American pest birds, known for stubbornly returning to the same areas year after year. Populations of year-round resident geese have been exploding in recent years, while migratory birds add to their numbers seasonally.

In the United States, September marks the return of birds from Canada joining the resident flocks, and the problem gets worse as winter goes on. For this reason, Bird-X pest control experts recommend setting up goose prevention devices now when resident geese are no longer attached to their nests, and before new geese move in and get too comfortable. The key is prevention as early on as possible.

Canada geese are complex creatures with extremely sharp sensory capabilities in both hearing and vision. They follow instinctive cyclical behaviors throughout the year. Knowledge of these seasonal variations is essential to implementing successful strategies for long-term Canada goose control.

Because Canada geese are creatures of habit, once a habitat has been chosen they are known for returning year after year. They select areas that meet their needs; grassy areas and especially those with bodies of water, such as golf courses, corporate grounds, and hospital grounds provide these birds with everything they need. Grass itself serves as a nutritious food source, which is why these birds are so often found on lawns. By using a liquid aversion product such as Bird Stop to cover the lawns, birds find the grass no longer appetizing and will seek out grassy areas that taste better. This is the same product used by farmers to protect fruit; it is harmless and commonly used.

Geese also respond to sound technology, but recorded sounds need to be specific to their species (most bird callers are not made for geese). Dr. Philip Whitford, Ph.D., who has studied Canada geese for over 30 years, recorded the only documented natural recording of a Canada goose alarm call. Combined with the Canada goose alert call, these sounds were used to create the Bird-X GooseBuster. Tested by Dr. Whitford over many years, this is the most effective, continuously relied upon goose control product available on the market today.

Visual decoys can also be beneficial, especially when combined with the tactics mentioned above (by creating a multi-sensory attack and making an area as unwelcoming as possible, geese are far less likely to get very comfortable). When placed on property early in the season, freshly returning geese will quickly see that predators have moved into their territory, think this area is not safe, and will move on.

General bird control means the clean-up of any bird mess (feather, droppings, and any remaining nests), as birds look for these markings to recognize safe territory. This is also just good housekeeping, and any responsible building owner, facility manager, or landscaper should be doing this anyway, since bird feces can carry disease, fungus, and other potentially dangerous materials. Geese themselves can be dangerous to humans as they are prone to attack, especially if they are allowed to nest. Furthermore, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 prevents the removal of geese when they are actively nesting until the goslings are old enough to move on safely; therefore prevention is in anyones best interest.

By installing goose control methods now, the risk of a larger goose problem later is greatly reduced. Once nesting starts in later winter and early spring, geese are much more challenging to move; the best opportunity to start a program is now in late summer and early Fall, when adults have recovered from their molt and goslings are capable of leaving.

Bird-X, Inc. is the leading international brand of bird control products since 1964, and is dedicated to protecting human health, wildlife and the environment in which we all live. The Chicago-based company manufactures a complete line of unique pest control products with an unmatched focus on quality, efficacy, and customer service.
