Rats in Barnstaple: Councils pest control advice - August 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Its important to highlight that North Devon Council doesnt provide a pest control service. "

ANDY Cole, leader for environmental protection at North Devon Council, said: Rats are no more an issue here in North Devon than any other area. Figures also show there has been no recent increase in complaints to us about them.

Its important to highlight that North Devon Council doesnt provide a pest control service. So, if people see rats in or around their home or business, they are advised to either take pest control measures themselves or seek advice from a reputable pest control contractor.

Mr Cole said the council had a duty to investigate alleged infestations.

He said: We can ensure the home or business owner takes appropriate action. In these instances, people should phone 01271 388870 or email customerservices@northdevon..uk.

A statement on Torridge District Councils website gave advice on how people can reduce the risk of rat infestations.

It said: You can help yourself by ensuring that your premises are in good repair, making it difficult for rats to gain access and making sure air bricks are intact.

Remove any sources of food or water, clear areas, which may offer shelter or nesting materials such as piles of timber or any areas of your garden, which are overgrown.

Do not leave food out for the birds or other animals.

Pest control finds pockets of bed bugs in Lodi theater - August 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A pest control agency found pockets of bed bugs Wednesday in a Lodi movie theater after the theater shut down to investigate reports from movie-goers, officials said.

Clark Pest Control said it discovered small pockets of bed bugs in limited areas of the Lodi Stadium 12 Cinemas and took care of the issue on site.

Officials said Clark was completing the eradication and found no live bed bugs during a follow-up inspection.

"We are battling bed bug infestations in many places in California's Central Valley and are confident in the service that we are providing the Lodi Stadium 12 Cinemas theater complex," Clark Pest Control officials said. "Their pest issues are limited and under control."

Lodi theater officials made the decision to shut down the theater Sunday and get it inspected after some theater patrons reported getting bites from the bugs.

The theater said it will reopen Thursday morning, and ensures that regularly scheduled inspections will continue throughout the year.

Battle for our Birds operation underway in Waikaia - August 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Battle for our Birds operation underway in Waikaia

The Department of Conservations Battle for our Birds pest control operation in the Waikaia Forest begins today.

The Waikaia operation in northern Southland is one of 22 confirmed operations that will use aerially applied 1080 over about 600,000 hectares of conservation land to knock down rising predator numbers fuelled by unusually heavy seeding in South Island beech forests.

The coordinated Battle for our Birds pest control programme is targeted to protect the most at-risk populations of mhua/yellowhead, kkriki/parakeet, kiwi, whio/blue duck, kea, kk, rock wren, giant land snails and native bats at sites across the South Island.

The Waikaia operation will protect threatened mhua populations along with long-tailed bats/pekapeka, robins/kakaruai, yellow-crowned parakeet/kkriki, hectors tree daisy, large land snails and peripatis/velvet worms over just under 7000 hectares in the forest.

DOC Catlins services ranger Cheryl Pullar said monitoring results show significant silver beech seed-fall in the area and rapidly rising rat and mice numbers.

Rodent numbers are already tracking towards levels that will trigger a stoat plague in the next few monthsjust as our most vulnerable species are nesting and trying to raise their young.

If we dont act now to knock back these predators, we could lose species such as mhua and long-tailed bat from Waikaia.

Today non-toxic cereal pellets laced will be applied to the treatment area, which encourages the pests to more readily eat the pellets. The toxic pellets, laced with the biodegradable poison 1080, will be spread across the target area during the next spell of clear weather.

Planning for about 30 Battle for our Birds pest control operations covering about 700,000 hectares of public conservation land, mostly in the South Island, has been underway since January following the prediction of a once in 15-20 year beech seeding event.

Bionic flies could save crops - August 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

New research suggests that releasing genetically engineered fruit flies into the wild could prove a cheap, effective and environmentally friendly way of pest control.

Scientists at the University of East Anglia in Norwich and Oxford-based Oxitec Ltd have conducted trials in a simulated wild environment in a Crete greenhouse. The next stage will be to gain approval for open-field studies.

Oxitec has developed a genetic approach to control medfly that is species specific and cost effective that relies on males passing on a self-limiting trait to female offspring.

This collaborative research study with UEA shows that the approach is effective and once appropriate regulatory approvals are received the technology will offer growers a safe and effective route to protect their crops.

Currently medfly causes crop losses in many parts of the world where it is an introduced, invasive and difficult to control pest as well as its native Mediterranean habitat. The partners now reveal that the release of genetically engineered male flies could be used as an effective population suppression method saving crops around the world.

The Mediterranean fruit fly is a serious agricultural pest which causes extensive damage to crops. It is currently controlled by a combination of insecticides, baited traps, biological control and releasing sterilised insects to produce non-viable matings, known as the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT).

Researchers simulated a wild environment within greenhouses in Crete and studied the impact of releasing Oxitec flies.

Lead researcher Dr Philip Leftwich, from UEAs school of Biological Sciences and Oxitec, said: The Mediterranean Fruit Fly infests more than 300 types of cultivated and wild fruits, vegetables and nuts. It is a real pest to agriculture and causes extreme damage to crops all around the world.

Of all of the current techniques used to control these flies, SIT is considered the most environmentally friendly as it uses sterile males to interrupt matings between wild males and females. The downside is that these males dont tend to mate as well in the wild because the irradiation method used for sterilisation weakens them.

Our research looked at whether releasing Oxitec flies, which are genetically engineered so that only male fly offspring survive, could provide a better alternative.

Protest as pest control starts - August 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Operating from Te Anau Airport, five helicopters from Taieri company HeliOtago carried out the operation over 11,200ha in the valley.

Subject to suitable weather, it will be followed by a drop of 1080-laced pellets in a few days.

It is the first of at least 22 operations to drop 1080 over 600,000ha of South Island conservation land in the next three months.

It is aimed at knocking back rising numbers of rats and stoats caused by an unusually heavy seeding in beech forests known as a "beech mast".

The first stage of a similar operation in Southland's Waitutu Forest is expected to start today.

A lone protester was yesterday issued with a trespass notice by a Doc officer.

Professional hunter and guide Dave Wilson, of Te Anau, spent seven hours at the airport's entrance gate under the close watch of police and Doc staff.

Mr Wilson said he was protesting at the "inhumanity of the poison".

Doc science adviser Dr James Reardon said the Iris Burn operation was the first because it "couldn't wait any longer".

NBC gets gold for pest control during Commonwealth Games - August 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Glasgow, Scotland (PRWEB UK) 17 August 2014

Glasgow 2014 was undeniably the biggest Commonwealth games so far, with over 1 million tickets to 250 medal events being sold, and many millions more watching worldwide. And when events that large attract crowds of those numbers, unfortunately, you will usually find pests and birds looking to scavenge on whats left behind.

NBC Bird and Pest Control Solutions Scotland division stepped up to the challenge ahead of them; providing complete pest control services for the entire two week duration of the games. This included servicing fly units in Hampden Park's catering and restaurant areas, as well as ensuring that over 250 pigeons were ethically moved from the stadium ahead of the athletics.

As the UKs leading bird control specialists, NBCs years of experience in ethical bird control was called upon, and using a combination of their techniques, they kept Glasgows local birds at bay throughout the games, and the spectators safe to watch the spectacular sporting events uninterrupted.

Having worked at Hampden Park for over 6 years, the teams existing knowledge of the stadium came in handy. When the football pitch was replaced with a running track, the disruption caused to the existing deterrents allowed the pigeons a window of opportunity. They quickly re-inhabited the stadium, causing problems for staff and customers, as well as creating a mess on the seating and athletics areas.

Without disturbing the construction project, the team worked quickly and efficiently to ensure that the problem was dealt with; with all eyes on Hampden Park, it was imperative that the stadium was kept clean and bird activity to the bare minimum.

Starting early at 4 a.m. so as not to disturb staff and customers, the expert team would begin. The most effective way to eradicate growing pigeon activity is using falconry, and NBCs expertise in this area paid off; with several hundred pigeons finding somewhere else to go for the duration of the games.

NBCs ethical bird control services are the UKs leading, with years of collective experience making them fully equipped to tackle any bird problem.

Whether a site is industrial, retail or even an airport, NBCs 18 years worth of experience working with birds means there is not a lot that they havent seen or dealt with. With free and comprehensive site surveys and advice on legislation, NBCs bird deterrent services cover from all angles, with a 5-year guarantee on all bird proofing installations, leaving a site with complete peace of mind.

To discuss a site, book a risk assessment or get some free advice, call NBC s local bird control team today on 0800 169 9646.

DOC to lure pests before 1080 drop - August 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Department of Conservation has launched a war on rats and stoats with a harmless drop of bait aimed at giving the pests a taste for pellets before dropping ones full of 1080.

DOC's pest control programme, Battle for Our Birds, will cover 6000 square kilometres of conservation land and started today at Iris Burn on the Kepler Track in Fiordland National Park.

DOC's first salvo in its battle for our birds is a drop of duds, but that's what's intended. DOC wants to lull rats, stoats and mice into a false sense of security with non-toxic bait pellets.

The idea is they will get used to the taste before DOC slips them real poison in pellets laced with deadly 1080.

DOC says it's a war and makes no apology for its bellicose language because of real fears a bumper beech seed harvest may trigger a plague of pests.

"The beach seeds are going off, rat numbers are rising and unless we keep those rat numbers down we will lose the mohoua from places like this," says DOC's James Reardon.

The mohua is one of many native birds that could disappear along with bats and even snails.

"We've got kea, kaka; we've got parakeets; we've got South Island robin, mouhua; we have the long-tail bats here and they're hanging on by a thread," says Mr Reardon.

The 1080 drops are controversial, but DOC says they are the only option for remote, rugged areas. A lone protester, local hunter Dave Wilson, claims it will have the opposite effect.

"The more 1080 you put on an area the more the rats will come back in greater numbers," he says.
