Despite a multi-year action plan designed to help keep the Greater Toronto Area bed bug population at bay, these pests continue to be a growing concern, according to City & Country Pest Control. With students living in close proximity, it can be easy for bed bugs to travel from place to place, says Horacio Parreira, owner of City & Country Pest Control. Thats because bed bugs can be easily transferred by luggage, boxes, books, and used furniture, and can end up in dorm rooms or shared apartments. Bed bug sightings have also been confirmed in areas frequented by students, including libraries, malls, and movie theatres.

Because bed bug infestations are becoming more common, Horacio says that its important for students and parents to know how to identify a bed bug and to know what to do if they find one. At about the size of a tick, adult bed bugs are relatively easy to see, but because theyre nocturnal, it's difficult to find them actually feeding. That said, female bed bugs can lay up to seven eggs per day, and to do that, they need blood. Once the nymphs hatch, they are on the hunt for blood.

Its difficult to know when one has been singled out by a bed bug, because their bite is painless; that said, the skin can become irritated, inflamed, and itchy, Horacio adds. To ensure a dorm, apartment, or bedroom is free of bed bugs, Horacio explains, its important to find and kill every one of them. Because bed bugs are small and can hide virtually anywhere, this can be difficult to do. Unfortunately, off-the-shelf pesticides can make matters even worse, because bed bugs can sense chemical odours, exacerbating an already terrible situation.

It might be easy to remove the odd bed bug, but when it comes to completely eliminating an infestation, its best to contact a pest control company with a proven track record of eliminating bed bugs, Horacio concludes.

A POLICE helicopter and team of officers launched a manhunt in Biggin Hill on Sunday morning after reports of gunfire on land owned by the Chevening Estate.

Concerned residents saw the helicopter flying overhead shortly after 10am as the armed officers attempted to track down the source of the gunshots heard near Pimlico Wood.

The operation resulted in five men with shotguns being found between Main Road and Jail Lane, but it turned out they were carrying out pest control with licensed firearms.

A police spokesman confirmed two vehicles and the helicopter were called to the scene at 10.10am after calls from the public that shots were being fired nearby.

Pest control team sparks woodland gun scare

A pest control problem has temporarily shut down one of the citys best-known restaurants, Arthur Bryants Barbeque on the citys east side.

The Kansas City Health Department received a complaint about a pest control issue at the restaurant at 1727 Brooklyn Ave. on Aug. 28.

During an inspection Aug. 29, Arthur Bryants was cited for not having effective pest control measures in place. Mouse droppings were observed in several areas, along with live roaches. The inspection report also lists several other critical health code violations.

Arthur Bryants voluntarily closed down after the inspection and has remained closed until the problems could be corrected.

The establishment is correcting the problem voluntarily before corrective action had to be mandated by the Health Department, said Jeff Hershberger, spokesman for the department, in a statement. At this time, they have submitted a very detailed corrective action plan detailing the work that they have done and that they plan to continue doing. They should be ready to reopen within the next day or two.

Officials with Arthur Bryants couldnt be reached for comment. Bryants in recent years has added locations at Ameristar Casino and Village West near Kansas Speedway.

Bryants became famous in part because it was near the old Municipal Stadium, where the Kansas City Athletics and Chiefs played. Its fans have included author Calvin Trillin, who declared it the single best restaurant in the world, and Presidents Harry Truman and Jimmy Carter.
