Hunua Ranges Pest Management Area to make a difference - November 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    27 November 2014

Hunua Ranges Pest Management Area to make significant difference, says Auckland Council

The creation of a new pest management area in the Hunua Ranges will provide a sensible, holistic approach to the care and control of one of Aucklands most important ecological areas, according to Auckland Council.

A successful collaboration between the Auckland and Waikato regional councils has led to the creation of the Hunua Ranges Pest Management Area, which will unify the work being done to manage the area.

Comprising the Hunua Ranges regional parks (including Whakatiwai and Waharau) and an adjoining buffer area, a consistent pest management programme in the Waikato Regional Pest Management Plan (RPMP) will now be implemented under the management of Auckland Council.

Auckland Council Environment, Climate Change and Natural Heritage Committee Chairperson Councillor Wayne Walker says that the agreement is an important step towards improving care of the ranges.

We are pleased that we have been able to work with Waikato Regional Council to enhance our commitment to caring for this incredibly important ecological and water catchment area, he says.

This joined-up approach will mean that the residents of the area and the wider Auckland population can be assured that there is a comprehensive and efficient pest management plan in place.

It will safeguard the future of the ranges from several invasive pests, including provisions to combat kauri dieback, better manage the feral pigs and goats that roam the ranges, through control and permitted hunting, and prevent feral deer establishing there.

This will make a significant difference to the management of the area, and make pest management in the area more transparent and efficient, he says.

Rentokil provides Expert Advice on How to Keep Flies away during the Warmer Months - November 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Cape Town, South Africa (PRWEB UK) 28 November 2014

Flies are commonly associated with human food preparation and storage areas and are a source of annoyance in most kitchens, restaurants and food production facilities. They are attracted to alcohol and food waste and can rapidly increase if they have access to these food sources.

Flies also feed on faeces, manure and rotting organic produce and thus contaminate food meant for human consumption by transferring bacteria from these sources on their legs and the hairs that cover their bodies. Flies liquefy their food with their saliva and then use the tongue - which is shaped like a straw - to suck up dissolved food, in the process transmitting bacteria and pathogens.

Flies can transmit diseases such as typhoid, cholera, dysentery, tuberculosis, anthrax and paralytic worms. It is therefore wise to get rid of them as soon as possible as not only do they ruin food but they also pose a serious risk to ones health and the reputation of ones business.

Getting rid of flies entirely can be difficult however, especially during the warmer months when the breeding cycle speeds up due to higher temperatures.

Rentokil offers some fly control tips to prevent flies from becoming a serious problem this summer:

Problems with flies or a fly infestation at commercial properties can lead to an unhygienic and unhealthy environment for customers and employees. The mere sight of flies may cause damage to the reputation of an establishment. For food manufacturing businesses especially, fly control is a critical element of HACCP compliance.

Types of treatment include spraying, fly bait stations, ultra-low volume fogging and fly control units specifically designed to meet the individual requirements of each business. Regular inspections by qualified pest controllers also prevent the re-occurrence of fly infestations.

For more information on flies, visit Rentokils website or contact 0800 77 77 88 for advice and information on pest control services for both residential and commercial properties.

"This will make a significant difference to the management of the area, and make pest management in the area more transparent and efficient," he says.

The agreement to create the management area stems from the 2010 boundary adjustments, which meant that each council became responsible for a part of the ranges.

Kevin Collins, Natural Heritage Programme Manager from Waikato Regional Council says that the unified approach was the best way forward.

More rats creep into Sweden's cities - November 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rats like these are common in Stockholm. Photo: TT

Sweden is experiencing a rapid increase in its rat population according to the country's biggest pest control company, which says that the growing trend for outdoor food stalls is partly to blame.

The whiskered animals are becoming more commonplace as "more people eat out, take fast food and go to the growing numbers of food trucks and stands," according to Sven Jeppsson, spokesperson for Swedish pest control firm Anticimex.

He also notes that household waste is increasingly being stored outside apartment blocks, rather than indoors.

"So the rats have more opportunities to source food from us and multiply than when we just dined at home," he tells The Local.

Across Sweden, 33,960 cases of rats were reported in 2013, compared to 29,006 in 2011.

Watch out for brown recluse spiders in the house as temperatures drop - November 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A young north Alabama boy was buried today after dying from a brown recluse spider bite.

Five-year-old Branson Carlisle died earlier this week in Marshall County after being bitten by a brown recluse spider. His doctors said he had a severe reaction to the bite.

Brian Lynch with Pest Control Experts said this is the time of year spiders start trying to get in homes.

"People usually come in contact with brown recluse spiders when they're moving stuff around the house that they don't typically move. Boxes, or if they've had clothes stored, like if your storing you winter clothes and you're getting them out, that's when you're getting into their environment," said Lynch.

And just one can be a problem.

If you have one that means you have the environment they like, so chances of them being in larger numbers, the chances of that happening are a bit higher," said Lynch.

Lynch says 90 percent of the time people think they have a brown recluse, when in fact it's just another type of spider. But he says it's important you know what to look for.

"There is a very distinctive marking on a brown recluse. On it's back is a dark brown spot that's in the shape of a fiddle or violin, said Lynch.

And if you see one, you need to look for entry points around your home.

Battle for our Birds protecting Catlins mhua - November 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Media release

    7 November 2014

Battle for our Birds protecting Catlins mhua

The Department of Conservation tomorrow (Saturday 8 November) begins its Battle for our Birds pest control in the Catlins to protect an important at risk population of mhua/yellowhead in the beech forest.

As well as mhua, the operation will protect long-tailed bats/pekapeka at risk from rising predator numbers fuelled by heavy beech seed-fall.

DOC Catlins ranger Cheryl Pullar said monitoring results show there has been a full silver beech mast in the Catlins and rapidly rising rat and mice numbers.

Monitoring of rodents has shown that mice are increasing throughout the forest and are particularly dense in lower altitude areas where tracking is at 78%. This will trigger a stoat plague over the summer, just as mhua are nesting and trying to raise their young. Rats are not at worrying numbers yet but will soon bounce back, Cheryl said.

These birds are particularly vulnerable to predation by rats, mice and stoats because they nest in holes in trees.

The aerial 1080 predator control will knock down rodent and possum numbers. Stoats will also be reduced as a result of eating poisoned carcasses.

A pre-feed operation begins tomorrow with aerial application of non-toxic baits over 10,100 ha of conservation land in the Catlins.
