Police say Thieves Targeting Packages Left on Porches a Growing Problem - January 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    WHEELING -

You order it, you pay for it, and you anxiously await its arrival. Then the package is finally delivered to your porch, but a thief gets there first, and steals it. It's happening in Wheeling and nationwide.

The Reverends Jim and Theresa Kelley of St. Luke's Episcopal Church ordered two new clergy shirts. You can't buy them locally. They are a specialty item that must be ordered. Fed Ex says they delivered them to the Kelley's front porch, but the Kelleys never got them. And they aren't alone. Since the Christmas season, five packages have been reported stolen from porches in Wheeling.

"I want to say it probably happens more than we probably know," said Sgt. Gregg McKenzie of the Wheeling Police Department. "I don't believe everybody who has a package stolen reports it to the police. They might just call the postal service, they might call UPS, FedEx, whoever their package was shipped to."

Kelley has notified the shipper and the shirt company, and tracked the shipment.

"If it's not there and the website says it's there, then you have to start making phone calls, and it's been several days already, for two shirts," Kelley said.

But she has another worry. Those shirts could allow anyone, from a thief to a pedophile, to impersonate a minister.

"They could fall into the wrong hands. You know, we live in the different world today. I guess I don't want anybody to find these or to come up with them and use them inappropriately."

‘Winter burnout’: Ice threatens the Deep South while Great Lakes shiver again - January 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

As dangerous temperatures hit much of the nation, another deep freeze is moving in, making January the coldest month so far this century. NBC's Dylan Dreyer reports.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

The Deep South is the next target for the deep freeze in a winter that wont quit.

Forecasters warned that ice could soon coat the front porches of Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Ga., where winter storm alerts were posted Monday for the first time in almost four years.

At the same time, the Great Lakes shivered yet again under wind chills that approached 50 degrees below zero. The University of Minnesota and schools around Chicago and Minneapolis closed for the day.

A woman walking around Lake Harriet in Minneapolis on Sunday pauses to shoot some video of the blowing snow.

The North is suffering winter burnout, said Tom Niziol, a winter weather expert for The Weather Channel. The South is going to see some weather that many parts have not seen in years.

For the South, forecasters said the worst of it would come Tuesday a band of dangerous ice, threatening trees and power lines, from the coast of Texas to the coast of North Carolina.

Just to the north was the likelihood of snow. Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C., could see 3 inches or more, Columbia, S.C., 5 inches or more, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina as much as a foot.

U.S. Postal Service asks to clear snow, ice - January 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver the mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs and mailboxes.

Snow and ice make delivery dangerous and slow, said Central Illinois District Manager Peter Allen in a news release. Maintaining a clear path to the mail box including steps, porches, walkways and street approaches will help letter carriers maintain consistent delivery service, and help them get those letters and packages delivered.

Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside delivery should remove snow piles left by snow plows to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers.

Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes.

The Postal Service curtails delivery only after careful consideration, and only as a last resort, Allen said in the release. Any curtailed mail is attempted the next delivery day.

Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for our customers to deposit their mail and for the U.S. Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery. Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice.

Conditions hamper paramedics - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Updated: Wednesday, January 22 2014, 07:14 PM EST

Rochester, N.Y.--Mark Bartholomew has a hard enough time staying warm as he races from call to call. Combine his daily routine as a paramedic for Rural Metro with slippery roads and often un-shoveled walkways or porches and their response times can be greatly impacted.

"It gets very dangerous to try to carry somebody out because now we have to make sure we have solid footing, we don't slip while carrying somebody and then they get hurt and we get hurt," explained the veteran paramedic.

At times EMS workers must act more like public works employees during winter.

"Whoever the parter, who is not taking care of the patient if they have a shovel and shovel a oath we carry salt so we can salt the sidewalk, salt the steps so we can have a little better traction," added Bartholomew.

First responders urge residents to shovel a path to the street if able, for those who live near elderly or disabled people, they encourage them to help their neighbors.

Often times those being transported are not dressed for severe cold, making the moments EMS have to get them into an ambulance more precious.
