Sheriff: Two Arrested for Stealing Packages from Front Doors - November 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The holiday season is off to a rocky start for some people over in Rankin County.

Two would-be thieves are accused of stealing packages straight from the front porches of homes.

It happened on the Tuesday in the Patrick Farms neighborhood in Pearl.

A FedEx driver called authorities after he spotted a vehicle following his truck from house to house.

Pearl police arrested 25-year-old Jimmy Lee Davis Jr. and a femalejuvenile, but it didn't end there.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey tells WJTV, stolen goods from a house burglary were also found in the suspects' vehicle.

The case was then turned over to the sheriff's office because the stolen goods were from a house burglary in the county.

"A pretty lowdown dirty way to steal from somebody," says Sheriff Bailey.

It sounds like a modern day Grinch, following trucks that deliver mail only to pluck the packages from a person's front porch.

"From looking from a criminal standpoint it's a pretty smart thing you could get all kinds of stuff I guess if you just follow the FedEx truck," says Sheriff Bailey.

How Good is Cabots New Water-Based ATOStain?

A wave of state and federal regulations forced the paint and stain companies to reformulate their products. How do the new water based stains perform? The results are surprising

Can I convert my back deck to a screened porch? Replace that hot bug magnet with a cool, sheltered outdoor room? Yes, you can depending on a number of factors.

A front porch is your homes face. Its what everyone sees as they drive by. Does your home need some make-up? Or a full make-over? Here are four categories of front porches.

What is a freestanding deck? Some freestanding decks stand alone in the yard, but many are right next to a house. What makes a deck truly freestanding is that it is self-supporting.But, why would someone want her deck freestanding?

Your spouse has been talking incessantly about a friends new sunroom. It has an airy, wide open space and great style, but mostly, it has light.Six major factors drive the cost of a sunroom:

Which to choose a deck or a patio? A deck is part of your housea patio is part of your yard. Decks have supporting structure and an elevated floorTowns consider decks to be additions and tax themPatios are exempt from those rulesPatios are less expensive.

Are you confused about deck construction terms? Dont know a trellis from lattice? I can help you speak like a contractor. Oh, cross that out. Make it: Speak to a contractor.

Synthetic decking just gets better and better. So whats new in 2011? Ill review the leading manufacturers, starting with Fiberon decking.

You loved your pressure treated deck when new,..but you have not treated it for years. And now it looks like thisWhat should you do? You have 3 alternatives:

Irish Channel residents warned about package thefts - November 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - People who live in the Irish Channel are being warned about a rash of thefts of items ordered online and left on front porches. Some of the thieves have even been caught on surveillance video.

"Yesterday, Christmas pajamas were stolen off a front porch," said Ryan McCabe, with the Irish Channel neighborhood association.

Thousands of packages will be delivered to New Orleans homes during the holidays, and in the Channel, thefts are already up.

"All of a sudden this year it's gotten really bad," said resident Brooke Woods.

McCabe added, " It's been a low-grade fever for a while, but recently there's been an uptick."

Resident Rick Viana said it happened so quickly, he believes the thieves actually trailed the delivery driver and took a stuffed animal sent by his parents for his daughter right after it was dropped off.

"Apparently UPS said it was delivered, and set it behind the trash can. I got here an hour later, and it wasn't here," he said.

Woods said she's been ripped off six times.

"Mostly clothes, maybe some presents," said Woods.

The Irish Channel Association has a warning to residents on its Facebook page.

Serial package thief caught stealing parcels from Bayonne porches again: cops - November 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Bayonne man has been caught stealing packages from people's porches, police said.Journal file photo

A Bayonne man with a history of stealing packages from people's porches has been arrested after being caught in the act yet again, according to Bayonne police.

Wednesday at 3:34 p.m., an off-duty Bayonne police officer saw Damien L. Baker, 45, removing a package from the porch of a home on Avenue A in Bayonne, Bayonne police Lt. Janine Foy said.

While walking away from the home, Baker opened the package, took out a drink that was inside, discarded the packaging and continued on his way, Foy said.

The officer, who was familiar with Baker from previous arrests, then arrested him for theft, she said.

Upon searching Baker, the officer found items that police believe to be from other people's packages, including a sweatshirt with a tag still on it and a pair of earrings, Foy said.

While Baker was in custody, the officer also discovered that he had an outstanding warrant for a theft reported Nov. 14 by another Bayonne resident living on Avenue A, whose package was also stolen.

In that incident, the homeowner had a security camera that captured footage of Baker removing the package, which police used to obtain a warrant, Foy said.

Baker was charged with two counts of theft and taken to the Hudson County jail in Kearny on $15,000 bail with a 10 percent option. He made his first court appearance yesterday at Central Judicial Processing in Jersey City.

Foy said he was arrested four separate times in Bayonne between January and March this year for taking packages off people's porches.

Man with record of stealing packages from porches in Bayonne strikes again: police - November 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Bayonne man with a history of stealing packages from people's porches has been arrested after being caught in the act yet again, according to Bayonne police.

Yesterday at 3:34 p.m., an off-duty Bayonne police officer saw Damien L. Baker, 45, removing a package from the porch of a home on Avenue A in Bayonne, Bayonne police Lt. Janine Foy said.

While walking away from the home, Baker opened the package, took out an energy drink that was inside, discarded the packaging and continued on his way, Foy said.

The officer, who was familiar with Baker from previous arrests, then arrested him for theft, she said.

Upon searching Baker, the officer found items that police believe to be from other people's packages, including a sweatshirt with a tag still on it and a pair of earrings, Foy said. It's not known who those items belong to, she said.

While Baker was in custody, the officer also discovered that he had an outstanding warrant for a theft reported Nov. 14 by another Bayonne resident living on Avenue A, whose package was also stolen.

Foy said he was arrested four separate times in Bayonne between January and March this year for taking packages off people's porches.

Baker did not steal from any one neighborhood in Bayonne, Foy said, adding that one theft took place on 35th Street, another one took place midtown on Avenue C and two took place "all the way" downtown.

Note Gun Toting Couple Posted On Their Front Door For Thieves Is Most Texas Thing Ever - November 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A pistol-packing Texas couple have come up with what they believe is a solution to prevent holiday packages from getting stolen from front porches in their neighborhood.

Some use home surveillance cameras to catch thieves in the act, The Blaze notes.

But after two packages were reported stolen from front porches in their Fort Worth neighborhood over the last month, Kell Curtis and his wife Julie posted this sign on their front door:

DEAR POTENTIAL PACKAGE STEALER: CAMERAS ARE ROLLING AND GUNS ARE LOADED.

To keep the holiday spirit alive, the Curtises decided to hang a beautifully crafted wreath with their warning:

It is a Texas thing, yes, Kell Curtis told NBC DFW. I do own guns, and yes I do have cameras. Theyre rolling. So its just neighbors, family, youre all welcome. Potential package stealers, youre not.

He says the sign is not an empty threat, and he is prepared to shoot burglars if need be.

In Texas its legal to do so, so if I felt threatened, yes, Kell said.
