CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Even on screens-open spring days, sidewalks on Charleston's West Side remain bare.
Porches are empty, except for the occasional neighbor catching some fresh air.
They're scared of stories they've heard, or witnessed.
"My first week, someone got shot there," said Candy Adkins, who lives on the West Side.
That week was four years ago for Adkins. Now, with three teenagers, she's constantly reminded why she doesn't let them go out alone.
"We heard all the shooting up there and then saw a car drive by really fast with the cops behind him," Adkins said.
That shooting killed 18-year-old Tymel Mickinney, who was Walker Stacy's close friend.
"It broke my heart," Stacy said.
On walks with Lacey West, they only go on certain routes at certain times.
"It's not even summer yet," West said. "It's still spring, and it's way worse than last summer ever was."

Community Meeting Planned to Discuss Violence on Charleston's West Side
With a tease of warm weather and signs that the winter snowfall just might be over, spring cleanup and garden plantings are well underway. Spending more time outside inspires creativity in decorating our porches, patios and decks with furniture. Planning your outdoor living oasis early in the spring will assist in executing the actual plan when the stable summer weather arrives.
Outdoor furniture doesn't just have to be the basic practical plastic chairs. Let's think outside the box. Visiting Greece a few years back, I noticed that my European relatives utilize their upholstered furniture outside. Granted, their weather may not be as harsh as ours in New England, but when it comes to decorating, I'm not opposed to trying anything.
Why not take that old floral chair and put in on the porch; especially if it's not being used inside and is taking up valuable floor space. Of course, the obvious question will arise: how to protect the indoor furnishings from the outdoor weather.
Purchasing a can of Scotchgard fabric protection will aid in the preservation of the fabric from the elements. Using removable vinyl patio furniture covers will also help in keeping the furniture dry.
Creating your outdoor oasis can be accomplished just as you would inside your home. Choose pieces from your home that are not getting the decorating love they once did and repurpose them for use in your outdoor living space. Rugs, furniture, tables, mirrors and paintings can all be considered for this space.
Gather an area rug that isn't being used or stored in the basement. Painting some of the pieces to work with that old floral or striped upholstered chair gives new life and purpose to the piece. Use a vintage linen table cloth to tie around an unused footstool or ottoman with a piece of twine. Adding roping will provide texture and a natural element to the space.
How about that old dining sideboard that never gets used? Utilize this piece as a serving station on the porch or deck.

If youre familiar with this site, you know Nick Murray. With his Porsche ownership serving double-duty as long-term road test content for 6SpeedOnline, Nick has been a great asset to potential Porsche owners on this site. We admire Nick for how much he loves his 991, but it seems Nicks Porsche 911 Carrera S is failing to return the favor. You see, Nicks 991 is a lemon. Thats not an exaggeration: theres a lot of shit wrong with Nicks car, the worst of which is how smoke and water fills the cabin.

Exotic automobiles, such as the Lamborghini Countach, used to have a bad reputation as temperamental, problem-ridden machines. I think the person hooning in a 25th-Anniversary edition of the car in the video at the bottom of this post seems to be out to change that way of thinking. The driver cooks up some Italian donuts [...]

The Ferrari FF is a revolutionary vehicle for the Italian automaker. Its a four-wheel-drive shooting brake from a company known for making RWD sports cars. So, it makes sense that the prancing horse people are going to make its lines more conventional. Sort of. For 2016, the FF will be produced as a coupe alongside [...]

The McLaren MP4-12C has had a turbulent life. It was McLarens first road car in over a decade. It wasnt expected to fill the shoes of the F1, but it had to do it justice. In that area, it delivered. The 12Cs performance ability wasand isimmense. Almost no other RWD car could accelerate with such [...]

Sleepy Porches by Lazy Summer - Video
Each year, as thousands of brightly if strangely dressed people celebrate Easter, spring or whatever else on Monument Avenue, the folks who live there could be forgiven for leaving town for the weekend.
But many residents of the four-block, four-lane stretch of avenue welcome the annual invasion of pink and purple with parties from elaborate and planned, to spontaneous and simple on their front steps and porches where they can gawk and talk.
