Boring, mundane businesses have an exhilarating, viral life on TikTok – The Verge - September 23, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

In a minutes time, you can see a beekeeper remove tens of thousands of bees from a compost bin with her bare hands. Watch a man cut open a tree with a chainsaw, water spewing out of it like a gaping wound. Or see a bare patch of desert transformed into a luxury oasis dotted with waterfalls and palm trees in the snap of a finger.

These normally humdrum tasks have become fodder for viral videos on TikTok, where clips of seemingly dull jobs like landscaping, car detailing, and power washing regularly rack up millions of views. The app has turned sometimes-hidden jobs or dirty behind-the-scenes necessities into soothing, thrilling, or otherwise intriguing videos.

Its also presented an opportunity for enthusiastic business owners, letting them use the platforms viral mechanics as a means for advertising, and for reaching an international audience far beyond the region theyd normally serve.

People on the other side of the world are seeing my videos, said Kelita Butler, whos had videos go viral that show her filling tubes of lip gloss for her Fairborn, Ohio-based company TopSecret Bundles. I got an order in Finland, an order in Ireland. People that I probably will never even meet face to face are seeing my products and what Im doing.

TikTok has been such a successful platform for Danny Wang, the founder of a luxury pool landscaping company in Orange County, California, that its become pretty much his entire job. Wang regularly posts videos of the homes and yards his company transforms from bland, blank spaces into what look like million-dollar resorts. Hed gotten some traction posting before-and-after photos on Instagram. But it wasnt until he applied the format to video and put it on TikTok that his work started going viral.

A typical clip will show a blank backyard covered in dirt, a caption promising something good is about to come Client: can you make my pockets hurt? followed by a glamorous reveal after the beat drops. Wang always includes a genie emoji, like hes simply poofing these dreamy projects into existence.

Our projects are very out there so that alone draws a lot of attention, Wang said. Its different. Its just interesting. It replaces the television.

TikToks much-discussed algorithm is the big reason these videos have succeeded. Whereas on Instagram or YouTube, you might have to seek these videos out I certainly have never searched for cool logging videos TikTok is built around serving up anything its algorithm deems addictive to viewers at large. Butler and Wang both use YouTube and Facebook too, but neither has seen the kind of wild, out-of-nowhere success that TikTok gifted them. The platforms short time limit also demands that videos are simple and focused, encouraging creators to make clips that are catchy up front, easy to follow along with, and that cut out before you lose interest.

The best small business videos capture your attention with something new and unexpected, like a sawed-off wedge of wood falling out of a huge tree or bright pink lip gloss flowing from a stark white machine. They take you behind the scenes of a small world youd otherwise know nothing about and may not have even known you could seek out.

I didnt realize that people might not know what I do exists, said Erika Thompson, who operates the Austin-based Texas Beeworks. A recent video shows Thompson in jeans and a tank top the veil, suit, and gloves cause you to lose a lot of dexterity taking a tree branch covered in a thick swarm of bees and banging it against a box, toppling the bees into the hive-like storage structure below. Bees have pretty tough exoskeletons, so the short drop doesnt harm them at all, Thompson says in the video.

At the same time, business owners have found clear patterns to what their audiences like, and they may have to stick to them to keep blowing up. Butler said shell film herself filling up lip gloss bottles she doesnt even need yet, just because thats what her fans like to see. Thompson said viewers respond strongest to her bee removal videos, which show her scooping thousands of bees out of strange spaces like a water meter box or a patio chair, then relocating them into transportable frames.

For the TikTok account of R&A Tree Service in Enumclaw, Washington, the winning formula has been big trees. The companys videos show owner Ryland Popke and colleagues slicing into and toppling over trees theyre paid to remove.

It sounds stupid, but Ive posted a lot of videos on TikTok where it was a small tree, but I thought it was a badass video and all the timing was right, and it turns out it doesnt do nearly as good as some of the other ones, Popke said.

The exposure has been helpful for their businesses. Wang said hes able to provide design services internationally, expanding his reach far beyond the 30-mile radius his company initially operated in. Popke has seen demand from all over the country for hats he sells. Butlers business operates online, so shes seen a surge in sales.

Thompson says the viral videos have helped her business too, but shes more excited about the education shes been able to offer people. She received an email from a woman saying her niece now wanted to be a beekeeper; another person said their child had been reenacting her video in their playroom, wearing a toy astronauts helmet as a makeshift beekeeping veil.

Shes also gotten some criticism from people who fear the videos will encourage amateurs to start scooping up bees on their own. Thompson doesnt buy it. I cant stop watching guys in wind suits, she said. But Im not gonna buy a wind suit and jump off a cliff.

Bottom line: Cleaning service, used car dealership gets the showroom on the road – Valley News - September 20, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

A veteran Upper Valley car dealer is starting up a novel way to sell and service cars.

Rick MacLeay, who owned and operated the former Subaru dealership in Norwich known as The Car Store and had a Hyundai dealership in White River Junction, has launched UV n GO, a mobile car detailing and used car sales service based in West Lebanon.

UV n GO is taking over the mobile car cleaning business of Upper Valley startup Zippity, which operated workplace car cleaning and detailing services at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Hypertherm before the pandemic suspended those operations.

Based at the former Avada Hearing Care Center location behind McDonalds in West Lebanon, UV n GO is also applying for a license from the New Hampshire DMV to sell pre-owned vehicles, MacLeay said, which it will provide largely through an assist-and-search service on behalf of buyers for a flat fee.

It will be tell-me-what-you-want-and-well-find-it, said MacLeay, who closed his Hyundai dealership on Sykes Mountain Avenue last year and sold his Subaru dealership to Prime Motor Group in 2016. Were not going to have a lot of cars on a lot.

MacLeay said technology is radically reordering the car service and sales business, and the days of car dealerships and drive-to repair garages are going to have as much appeal for consumers as, well, that old beater rusting on the used car lot.

Car buyers are increasingly doing their research online and showing up at a dealership only to take delivery of the vehicle a new online sales platform piloted at White River Toyota was designed with just that reality in mind.

Meanwhile, Zippity, co-founded in 2017 by Lebanon High School grad and Tuck School of Business alumnus Ed Warren, has been pioneering an at-home car repair service that can do many routine service jobs, such as brakes, mufflers and tune-ups, in the customers driveway.

In the old days we called it a relationship-based business, but we dont do that anymore. The culture has changed, MacLeay said.

UV n GO will use Zippitys proprietary software to power its online appointment bookings platform, but Zippitys car cleaning and detailing service will now be marketed in the Upper Valley under the UV n GO name, according to MacLeay.

Zippity did not respond to messages for comment.

MacLeay said his latest venture allows him to take advantage of the knowledge that hes accumulated since he was a teenager washing cars at a dealership in Windsor while at the same getting a foothold in the industrys technology-enabled next phase.

Most of my career has been doing the same-old, same-old for decades, he said. This is different. I like shiny new objects.

For a long time it was a roller skating rink. For a short time it has been a dog day care and boarding kennel.

This time its for sale (again).

Peter Martin, who nine months ago converted his Great View Roller Skating rink in Enfield into Chosen Valley Pet Resort, is winding down the pet boarding business and is looking for someone to buy the 4-acre, 16,000-square-foot facility.

Asking price: $875,000, knocked down 27% from what Martin was seeking a few years ago when he last sought to sell the property.

When we first opened in January we were getting a lot of dogs and then we ran smack into COVID, Martin said of the pandemic that has leveled countless businesses. We need 30 dogs a day to break even but with the pandemic it was three to five.

When Martin converted the site, which had been a roller skating rink for 42 years, into a pet care resort, it was as a last resort to find a new use for the facility that had seen dwindling numbers of skaters over the years.

Martin envisioned that, with Mascoma Valley residents traveling Route 4 to jobs at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, Dartmouth College, Hypertherm and FujiFilm, the location was strategically placed to entice dog owners who wanted to drop off their beloved on their morning commute and then pick up their wagging tail on the way home at night.

COVID-19, however, threw a bone into the business plan.

With people working from home, or stranded at home because they are out of a job, or wary of traveling and thus removing the need for boarding, there is diminished demand for pet-sitting services, Martin said.

People are home and they want to be with their dog; thats understandable, Martin said.

As a result, Martin said he had to curb hours he is open to three days a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Martin has tried to sell the property before the difference this time is Ive got a broker and Im not trying to sell it myself but many thought the $1.2 million asking price at the time was a bit steep.

Martin said he and his wife, Diane, are both 70. Lifes too short, so lets give someone a chance where we left off.

As for what use the property could be put to it is zoned as a community business district Martin said if a buyer did not want to continue with a dog kennel, then it could be easily re-converted back into a skating rink.

I still have 1,000 skates, at a minimum, in the store room, he said.

Alternately, the cavernous structure could be utilized for a business that appears always to be in demand in the Upper Valley, at least based upon the number that have sprouted in recent years.

I hear theres a need for storage space, Martin speculated.

Forreston ‘ahead of the curve’ in recovery – Ogle County News - August 21, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Forreston Village President Mark Metzger believes the village is in a good spot in recovery efforts from the Aug. 10 wind storm that included winds over 100 miles per hour that damaged trees and electrical wires over 48 blocks and damaged structures within 13 blocks.

The good news is, it all started with the sheriff calling in the emergency team on Monday when the storm was still going through, Metzger said. That put us ahead of the curve with the whole plan. We also have volunteers pitching in.

Forreston is still doing tree trimming, which is being done by a local company. There are still hanging branches and damaged trees that need to come down. Metzger believes brush will be picked up for the next month.

Forreston Public Works Director Mark Rust is on medical leave, but part-time workers have been stepping up in his absence. State and county trucks have come to take debris to the quarry on Pit Road.

The state is going to furnish a burn curtain, Metzger said. Its a big oven with little to no smoke that needs to burn for at least five days. It burns something like 200 kilotons a day. We have over 1,000 and we qualify. All debris will be burned up, and thats free of charge.

Metzger said buildings are still being reviewed for structural damage and the village is still working on insurance and repair issues.

The village contacted its insurance company for the first time Monday. Metzger thinks hell have a better idea of the price of the damage in 2-3 weeks.

We saved with the state and county vehicles hauling stuff, Metzger said. In the big picture, its still a big price tag but its been cut in half of what it should have been.

The majority of residents had power restored by the evening of Aug. 13. Some pockets of the village had issues and it took until the weekend. Candlelight Trailer Park, which was hit worst by the storm, is still without power.

Land and trailer owners were contacted and six trailers deemed not livable were removed. There were 13 lots in the park and two were empty. There are 3-4 livable trailers left and the village is working on a plan to restore water, gas and power to them. Metzger believes that could take two weeks.

As far as displaced residents, a shelter was offered but not utilized. Residents went to live with family and friends.

Some of the people, one was an old lady who moved in with her daughter in Arkansas, Metzger said. Another went to live with family in Freeport. People are finding places. If theyre having trouble or need help, please contact us.

The village postponed its Aug. 17 board meeting to Aug. 24 due to the storm. Metzger thinks a good part of that meeting will be used to work on bills from the storm and starting projects like a possible fundraiser.

Metzger believes most village businesses are up and running again. Moring Disposal had its building damaged but work has continued. The BP station is currently closed after it had its air conditioning and heating unit ripped off its roof.

The village did not qualify for federal assistance due to the storm. To qualify, at least 25 structures have to be damaged. Metzger said engineers said Forreston had 15.

Metzger has appreciated the help from individuals and large and small entities.

If this was a boxing match, we took a shot and tumbled, Metzger said. But we continued to fight and pulled out a victory. Because of where were at. The county and state helped. We got 4-5 days ahead of the curve and they were impressed.

Nobody has seen something like this here. People have lived here 40-50 years. Residents said so. We rolled up our sleeves and got it done.

How youth organizations can find funding for programs amid COVID-19 physical restrictions – Bangor Daily News - August 21, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

MAINE (Aug. 20, 2020) As Maine assesses their back-to-school plans, athletic teams and afterschool programs are looking at how fall sports and extra-curricular activities can move forward safely. Eight million students and 500,000 coaches participate in sports; 4 million students are in performing arts and 300 million-plus fans are involved in high school activities throughout the school year.*

Funding for these activities is usually supplemented through in-person fundraising opportunities, such as selling candy bars, washing cars or selling coupon books, but these methods may not be realistic in todays environment. U.S. Cellulars Community Connections program provides a virtual way for K-12 groups to raise up to $1,000, whether they need face masks and cleaning supplies or equipment and uniforms. Organizers can register their group at uscellular.com/communityconnections to start earning sponsorship support online.

Many academic and athletic groups and organizations have had to think differently about fundraising this year due to COVID-19, and this program can be a great fundraising alternative for them, said Matt Kasper director of sales in New England. We know there are several groups in need of financial support, and by investing in them, we can help ensure that all kids get a fair shot to achieve their goals in a safe and responsible manner.

Once registered, local non-profit academic and athletic groups representing youth up to 12th grade have 14 days to rally their friends, families and supporters to complete online activities that include taking short surveys, watching videos or following U.S. Cellular on its social channels. Each completed activity earns money that goes directly to the organization up to $1,000 and the website makes it easy to spread the word on social media.

Since launching the program in 2015, U.S. Cellular has awarded $1.4 million to nearly 3,000 groups nationwide. For more information and to view the official rules, please go to uscellular.com/communityconnections.
