Timeless Landscapes offering services for lawn care needs - August 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    8/7/2014 - West Side Leader

The business offers design and build services, as well as lawn maintenance services, to residential and commercial clients, mostly in Summit County, according to Bob Anthony, who owns and operates the business with Kevin Graham.

Anthony said he and Graham bring 12 years of combined experience to the business.

We combined my skills in lawn maintenance and Kevins skills in landscape construction to form Timeless Landscapes about one year ago, said Anthony. This combination provides a great balance for our customers and an opportunity to grow the business. We also have five professional staff members that are knowledgeable, experienced and trained, and we can take care of all outdoor needs for our customers.

Anthony said the construction side of the business, led by Graham, can design and construct decks, walkways, patios, fencing, retaining walls and water features. Also available is bed excavation and the creation of new garden beds with annual and perennial plantings, as well as mulch and gravel work.

Anthony said customers can get all their lawn care services taken care of through Timeless Landscapes.

The lawn maintenance services include mowing, full fertilizer and weed control services, garden bed maintenance, shearing and pruning of bushes and trees, brush and tree removal, leaf removal in the fall and general spring and fall cleanup.

Timeless Landscapes also offers power-washing services for patios, decks, driveways and buildings, and in the winter, snow removal services are available.

Anthony said the business has spent time this summer working to address drainage issues for many customers after the heavy rains in May and June.

We have seen a lot of drainage problems, and we have been working to reduce these flooding issues for our customers, he said. We work to pull water away from homes, using drains and reworking downspouts to address the overflow of these heavy rains. We also look at low spots on lawns and work to prevent that pooling of water.

'Laundry Love' program helps people in need afford clean clothes - August 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Good News

    Chris Serico TODAY

Food and shelter are basic needs, but clean clothes can mean a renewed level of self-respect for the underprivileged.

Laundry Love, a charity based in Portland, Oregon, aims to help people who are struggling financially by partnering with local laundromats to offer free laundry services. According to Laundry Loves national director, Greg Russinger, it all began in 2002, when he and his friends offered to help a homeless man named Eric, a.k.a. T-Bone, in Ventura, California.

In addition to providing a service, Laundry Love aims to make weekly and monthly events a social experience.

He just said, If I had clean clothes, I think people would treat me as a human being, Russinger told TODAY.com.

Russinger and fellow volunteers found a local laundromat and provided the money and supplies to wash the clothes of T-Bone and other community members in need. The Ventura branch of Laundry Love has remained active ever since.

In the years that followed, Laundry Love has provided an estimated 450,000 loads of laundry to about 300,000 people, according to Russinger. Beneficiaries include the jobless, the homeless, immigrants, victims of natural disasters and others who find themselves financially strapped.

No joy at car service centres - August 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians are getting increasingly dissatisfied with the quality of service provided by authorised vehicle service centres.

The J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2014 Malaysia Customer Service Index (CSI) study also found that the expectations of vehicle owners increased since last year.

Overall satisfaction among new Malaysian car owners slipped three points from last years score to 754 out of 1000, the study revealed.

Satisfaction with service provided by Malaysian national brands dipped below the overall average to 744 points, down five points from last year.

On the other hand, the study found that customers expected more from these service centres, compared to the year before.

The study identified 22 service standards that enhance the overall customer service experience. Customer expectations in 2013 were for service centres to meet 17 of the 22 standards, stated the study.

In 2014, customers expected a minimum of 19 of those 22 standards to be met in order to have a positive service experience.

The study also found that additional services improved customer satisfaction, such as washing and vacuuming vehicles at the completion of the service and making follow-up phone calls to customers after service had been completed.

It stated, however, that only 14% of mass market customers had their service centres carry these out.

Toyota ranked highest in overall customer service satisfaction with a score of 777, followed by Nissan at 776, while Isuzu and Mazda tied for third place at 775.

In the Loop: BACKGROUND CHECK: Interior Secretary Sally Jewell - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sally Jewell has been in her Cabinet position for more than a year, but how much do we really know about her? We know she was the chief executiveof Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) before becoming interior secretary, and before that worked as an oil engineer for Mobil.

But what about the big stuff? Her hopes and dreams (other than climate change legislation), and, the really important questions, like her favorite foods? We learned, among other things, that the lover of the outdoors is not a huge TV watcher (not a huge surprise, there) if shes stuck inside shed much rather be cutting up jigsaw puzzles.

Which Cabinet secretary would you most like to (or do you) hang out with, and what would you do?

Sylvia Burwell. Besides being multifaceted (reallyOffice of Management and Budgetand now Health and Human Services), we share a common connection to Seattle, an appreciation for good, wild salmon and a commitment to connecting children to nature and the great outdoors.

Whats your favorite non-work-related Web site/blog/app/magazine?

National Geographic. Nat Geo takes me on an adventure every time I read it.

Fill in the blank: People would be surprised to know that I _________.

Cut jigsaw puzzles as a hobby. Picking up the skill from my father, learned from his aunt who made a living during the depression cutting diabolically difficult puzzles, it has been a fun family tradition. My son has now learned the skill, proposing to his new wife through a jigsaw puzzle it took her three days to find the marry me message.

Whats your dream job (other than your current gig)?

While this is a great job, and leading REI was hard to beat, being a back-country park ranger working with children would be great. My favorite office is the one with no walls.

When the State Takes Kids Away From Parents: Three Perspectives - July 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A former child protective services worker who took kids from parents, a woman who was abused as a child, and a wrongly accused father tell their stories.

    A. Strakey/Flickr

In the reader correspondence that follows, a former child protective services worker shares her perspective on the system, the difficulty of working within it, and its paternalistic excesses. A woman who says the system saved her from an abusive father doubts the narrative that CPS is overaggressive at protecting kids. And a father investigated for child abuse says that the experienceradicalized him.

First, the experiences of a woman whose job included taking kids away from their parents:

Opinions usually fell into one of two predictable camps: as a CPS worker you were either accused of doing too little to protect the children involved, or of being too invasive, at best another mindless bureaucrat and at worst a power-happy sadist that got off on telling others how to raise their kids. In truth, both are often correct. Ive seen them personally. And its a problem. Most workers, however, fall somewhere along the wide spectrum in between, and where they fall will be influenced more by their local inter-and-intra-agency culture than any statute.

Thinking of the mother of the 9-year-old, I realize I am not privy to the details of the case. I understand there is a lot I dont know. Things like, does this mom have a history of abusing or neglecting this child or other children? Did the child have any special needs that made her especially vulnerable to being unsupervised? Did the child have any other signs of abuse like severe bruising or physical injuries, or of neglect such as obvious malnutrition or chronic head lice, or any other incalculable number of things? These would no doubt make a huge impact on my opinion of the situation, but as it stands what I read is this: a 9-year-old girl was left with a cellular phone at a playground near her mothers workplace with adequate shade and access to water. Upon learning that her mother was not present, an adult called the police. So far, I vilify neither the caller for calling nor the police for responding. It is what happens next that I strongly question.

Apparently, the best answer to this case was to remove the child from her mothers custody, put her in foster care, and arrest the mother. Ill be blunt: this is insane.

I agree that an investigation to ensure the child is being cared for adequately isnt an entirely bad idea, and I would even agree that other arrangements for the daughters care while mom is at work would be better. This, however, can be accomplished without removing the child from her home and certainly without arresting the mother (which, honestly, just seems asinine to me). In fact, depending on whether any other signs of abuse or neglect were present, it might not be strictly necessary to carry out a full investigation. CPS (dependent on that specific states statutes) may have been able to warn the mother and offer her help in finding affordable or even subsidized childcare. CPS workers generally have some latitude. Depending on the state, however, this is not always an option.

Yet even when an investigation is opened, if a parent says that they have no access to childcare while they are at work, guess who can help? Childrens Services. Or did we forget that they are, in fact, services? That workers are Social Service Workers, not mini-cops or pseudo-judges. Its a lot of power, to be able to remove a child from their home and family, to prohibit or require supervision of contact between family members, tolegally terminate a parents right to their child.

CPS workers and their supervisors have a staggering breadth of power, power that must be wielded with the utmost care, judiciousness, and perhaps most importantly, humility. My old boss, a man wiser than his chronological mid-thirties, laid it out for me the first week on the job. He told me that removing a child from their home is the juvenile justice systems equivalent of the death penalty, the most extreme thing a worker can do. Its true. There is no higher sanction in family law.
