This is time of year to be thankful for something whether you #39;ve been treated like dirt from your boss, spouse, friend, what have you. As you #39;ll hear over over again, "there #39;s always something to be thankful for." Well, I don #39;t know about you, but 2012 wasn #39;t exactly a stellar year for me, my family or many people I know. With the economy in the tank, unemployment on the rise, home foreclosures, businesses closing, you don #39;t need me to tell you times are tough. Yet, there #39;s always something to be thankful for. As someone has probably told you at least once in ur life: be thankful you #39;re alive. For many, that means they get to live to see all the hardships they #39;re enduring continue tomorrow. For others, it means another day at the beach, another custom design added to their car or truck or remodeling the home. For the elderly who don #39;t have anybody to visit them, it #39;s another day of loneliness. For the homeless, it #39;s another day of, well, being homeless. April Spicer, Marysville, describes her new furniture refurbishing business as a fairly new adventure.

It all started when she and her husband, Curtis Spicer, added onto and remodeled their home in east Marysville.

We had more space and needed more furniture to fill it, she said. We had a dining room table given to us, which was Curtis great-grandparents.

The dining room set was a light oak with ornate turned legs, but the color was not to Aprils liking and did not fit her style.

Both April and Curtis are both big DIYers (Do It Yourselfers) and have enjoyed designing, building and decorating their house during the remodel project.

So I thought I can do this, she said. I sanded the varnish off and stained the bare wood a dark espresso color.

She sent the table legs to Eubanks Custom Cabinet in Holton, which did their kitchen cabinetry, to use the same cream-colored paint and glaze to match the cabinets.

I am really pleased with the end result and was amazed at the transformation a piece of furniture can go through with just paint and stain, she said. It went from my not wanting it in my home to really, really liking it.

Aprils next project was the dining room wainscoting. For the kitchen and dining room, she went for a Tuscan/Old World look. Around the apron sink she chose an olive green paint color and for the walls a burnt orange color called Native Pottery.

With their open floor plan she wanted the dining room to be tied in with the kitchen, so Curtis built wainscoting around the dining room, and April painted it the same olive green with a dark translucent glaze.

Home remodeling leads to furniture-refurbishing business

HDR Remodeling, a home remodeling contractor in the East Bay, is congratulating its production manager, Brian McRae, for being chosen to supervise the installation of the light sculpture at the Bay Bridge.

McRae was selected for the special assignment because of his strong project and people management skills. He will return to the company after the Bay Lights installation is completed.

Using 25,000 energy-efficient, white LED lights, the display is 500-feet high and 1.8-miles wide, and will shine from dusk to midnight for two years. The sheer size of the project will ensure that it is visible from San Francisco, but it will not be visible to drivers along the bridge. The power used by the light bulbs will be offset by solar credits for the least environmental impact, and only $11,000 per year is allocated to energy costs. It is expected to add approximately $97 million dollars to the local economy.

Artist Leo Villarreal will use patterns of weather, the water, and the traffic of cars, ships and wildlife as inspiration for creating his software algorithms. The patterns will never repeat.
