A retaining wall collapse destroyed three Washington Heights apartment units and caused a temporary evacuation of nearly 100 residents in two buildings early this morning, officials said.

The aged wall between 67 Pinehurst Avenue and 81 Cabrini Boulevard crumbled at 4:27 a.m., an FDNY spokesman said.

A drencher of a storm on Friday and early Saturday morning likely contributed to the fall of the structure, officials believed.

It happened in the blink of an eye, said Earl Martin, 19, who heard a grumbling sound when it happened.

It was a lot of rumblings and shaking like it was an earthquake. The wall just came down, he said.

A wall collapsed in Washington Heights this morning, forcing the evacuation of nearly 75 residents.

He felt thankful to be awake, he said.

If I [were] sleeping, I would have died, he added. Theres so much glass and brick and debris everywhere. I would have been buried. Im so lucky. Im counting my blessings.

He grabbed his grandma, he said, and helped her out of their first floor apartment.

A Utica man was taken to the hospital early Thursday morning after crashing his pickup truck on Burrstone Road, New Hartford police said.

Todd M. Manolescu, 41, was eastbound on Burrstone Road at about 8:15 a.m. when he struck a sign and a fire hydrant on the right side of the road just before Burrstone Ice Cream, police said.

The truck then swerved across both lanes of Burrstone road, crashed through a stand of small trees -- uprooting some in the process -- and came to rest against a retaining wall next to a Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare building across the street from Slocum-Dickson Medical Group, police said.

The truck dislodged its cab in the course of the crash, and caught on fire after hitting the wall, police said.

Utica police, New Hartford police and the New York Mills Fire Department responded, and rescue workers were able to help the driver out of the vehicle and extinguish the fire, police said.

Manolescu was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for with what appeared to be minor injuries, police said.

Police said the accident was the result of medical issues.
