Lead-Deadwood High School road to see major overhaul - November 20, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

LEAD The Lead-Deadwood School Board approved $73,500 in project engineering costs that will start in motion the process of redoing CC Curran Drive, the street that runs behind Lead-Deadwood High School, and its adjoining retaining wall.

We want it to last 50 more years and its not been touched up a whole lot in the last 70 years, said Lead-Deadwood School District superintendent Dr. Dan Leikvold.

Lead-Deadwood School District building and maintenance supervisor Wayne Karpinen said that the approximate $450,000-project will stretch over the next two years and involves replacing the roughly 500-foot road, as well as the retaining wall that borders it.

That short wall is in tough shape, Karpinen said. What were basically going to end up doing is widening that area and moving the wall back into the hillside.

Underneath the road is an area that formerly housed a coal storage bin, when coal was used to heat the building.

Now we use it for a fuel storage tank, Karpinen said. Its a backup. We have interruptible service for natural gas. When it gets really cold we switch to fuel oil. The problem is, the current tank is 20 years old and doesnt meet all the latest and greatest specs, so were going to remove that tank and put the newest version in.

There are three entrances located behind the building, entrances that students use and parents drop off to: a triple door entrance to gym one, a double-door entrance to the wood shop and a double-door entrance to the old home economis/now art room.

Were going to look into a way to try and tie our steam boiler system into that area underneath the road surface to develop a snow melt system back there, Karpinen explained.

A short wall is also planned in the vicinity of the stairs that come down to CC Curran Drive from the bus garage to keep rock that sloughs off the hillside off the road.

There are also plans to make the handicap ramp to gym one more handicap accessible by adding handicap parking nearer to the ramp.

Update on Brecksville's Wiese Road Retaining Wall project - November 20, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

BRECKSVILLE - The project to refurbish and replace portions of the Wiese Road retaining wall is on pace to be completed by the end of November.

Workers finished the replacement of crumbling paved sections and the installation of several concrete structural panels Nov. 6.

At that time, the only large items that needed to be finished were the refurbishing of a guardrail on the lower portion of the wall and some painting work on the panels.

Weve still got a little bit of work to do, but not too much more, City Engineer Gerry Wise said. The work is being done by Suburban Maintenance and Construction Inc., which agreed April 16 to do the work for roughly $944,000.

The firm is under the supervision of Donald G. Bohning and Associates Inc., which agreed to manage the project for an original fee not to exceed $35,000.

Wise said the project is still on pace to cost less than the $1.32 million that it was originally expected to cost, based on preliminary estimates.

Deadwood OKs funds for retaining wall repairs - November 18, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

DEADWOOD The Deadwood City Commission approved two funds to repair two retaining walls.

One, at 95 Stewart St., is owned by Randy and Lori Johnston and is a $51,400 project.

Its a historic wall, threatening a historic resource and threatening life safety, said historic preservation officer Kevin Kuchenbecker.

The other wall is located at 25 and 29 Terrace St.

The walls themselves are historically significant, Kuchenbecker said. They are listed as part of the resource on the National Register of Historic Places. If they fail, they would threaten a resource. If the walls fell over, there could be life safety issues, as well.

The approval of a third project, bid at $60,720 is expected to be approved by the Deadwood City Commission.

This property, at 15 Madison St., is owned by Gary Herdt, where a vault is collapsing.

The funds are being spent as part of the citys retaining wall program. As of the end of October, nearly $400,000 has been spent to repair the failing retaining walls.

Kuchenbecker said he has already exceeded the budgeted $250,000 for this year.

The program has served as a resource for many participants and is integral to maintaining Deadwoods historic integrity.
