SARANAC LAKE - Village Mayor Clyde Rabideau said he's been getting a lot of questions from people about what the large crane and crew of contractors are doing next to a Broadway bar.
For the past week, a crew from Luck Brothers, a Plattsburgh construction firm, has been using the crane to help reinforce a section of the retaining wall that runs below Alpine Terrace, behind the Rusty Nail, near the intersection of Bloomingdale Avenue and Broadway.
"The village owns most of the hillside abutting the Upper Broadway section near the Nail and that hillside is starting to slide towards the street, thanks to years of rain and gravity, which will endanger people and property," Rabideau said in a Sunday news release. "With federal grant monies from FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency), a contractor is drilling large diameter holes along the bank approximately 30-to-35-feet deep. They will then insert heavy angle iron into the holes and encase the pieces in concrete. These iron-concrete structures will then, according to engineers, retain the hillside and help stabilize it."

A Luck Brothers representative on the site told the Enterprise this morning that the wall will be reinforced in 14 different locations. He said he expects the work will take about another month to complete.
The project is one of several happening in the village that are associated with damage from the spring 2011 floods. Crews have also repaired a retaining wall on Pelkey Lane and are restoring Hydro Point behind the Lake Flower dam, which was undermined by the flooding of the Saranac River.
In July, Luck Brothers was the low bidder and won a $1.18 million contract for repair work associated with the spring 2011 floods. The company was one of four that submitted bids, ranging from $1.18 million to $2.6 million.
The village is paying for the work up front and will be reimbursed by FEMA later. The village's share will be 12.5 percent, or roughly $148,000.
Rabideau said the Alpine Terrace job is "one of those projects you get asked about by every three people in the Grand Union.
"I thought I'd get this news release out there so everyone would know, and then I can finish my shopping more quickly and get home in time to watch the football game," the mayor said.

IN GOMBAK, over 150 people are refusing to enter their homes after a large portion of a retaining wall barely a metre away from their five-storey police living quarters collapsed.
Residents choose to stay in a hall near the police quarters despite Public Works Department (PWD) officers and its director assured that the building was structurally sound after an inspection on Sunday.
Gombak deputy police chief Supt Rosly Hassan said the 150 people who occupy 32 units in Block F1 were fearful that the daily heavy rainfall could trigger another incident.
Some families had gone in to collect their personal belongings and valuables.
We will expedite the repair on the retaining wall so that residents can feel secure entering their homes again, he said.
It is learnt the 13 blocks housing 612 units are for police officers in the nearby area.
Several large pieces of tarpaulin have been placed over the site of the collapsed wall by PWD personnel to ensure rain water would not seep into the soil and risk more landslips.
The incident occurred on Saturday at about 7pm after heavy downpour in the afternoon.
The retaining wall collapsed into three cars parked nearby. No injuries were reported.
Supt Rosly said Bukit Aman would oversee the repairs on the collapsed wall expected to be carried out this week.

Calm arrives after storm -

GOMBAK: Calm and order were slowly being restored among the 150 residents of Block F1 at the Gombak police headquarters, who were traumatised after the collapse of a retaining wall outside their apartment on Saturday.
Taman Templer assemblyman Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said heavy downpour had loosened the soil near the police station leading to the collapse within two metres from the block.
While no-one was hurt, three cars that were parked by the roadside were damaged in the 6pm incident.
Subahan, who visited the area yesterday, assured residents that it was safe for them to continue staying at the apartment block.
"However, we briefed them on safety procedures to follow in case similar incidents occur," he told reporters.
"At the same time, residents can temporarily move into any of the empty units at neighbouring blocks if they wish."
He said the Public Works Department were doing their best to rectify the problem and the cleaning up work was expected to be completed today.
Police were also conducting a round-the-clock monitoring near the area until the problem was resolved.
"We are now waiting for their report and hopefully everything can be resolved quickly, especially since it is now the rainy season."
Subahan said Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) was planning to organise a gotong-royong with residents today.

One of Tucson's man-made wonders was rendered invisible 20 years ago, hidden behind a retaining wall.
Those who lived or traveled on the northwest side in the 1980s and early '90s still remember the marvel known as "The Great Wall of Ina."
A landscaped backyard at 1322 E. Thunderhead Circle features four tiers of walls built by John and Betty McCullough that slope down 75 feet from a patio to East Ina Road.
Hot-air balloon companies would point it out to passengers. Movie legend Lee Marvin, who lived on the northwest side before he died in 1987, once remarked about the wall, "Those people must be crazy to be working so hard."
Barbara Criswell of Sunset magazine called the wall "interesting and innovative."
"It was an unusual thing, and it showed a lot of ingenuity. It seemed to solve a lot of problems, too."
The wall still exists, but it's no longer visible from the road.
The county filled in a 15-foot dip in front of the house in order to improve Ina and finished a noise-blocking retaining wall in 1992. The new, not-so-great Wall of Ina is 15 feet tall and 460 feet long, much of it along the property, obscuring it from drivers.
"I wanted to shoot myself. It literally destroyed the wall," Betty told the Tucson Citizen in 1992. "John was speechless. He was sick for two days. It took a few men three months to destroy what it took us more than six years to build."
The couple moved to Tucson from Ohio in 1980. John built the wall to stop county personnel from cutting through his property to check a sewer line meter. He did it without blueprints or any wall-building experience.
