Fall kills overseas visitor to Hamilton - March 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Police stand guard on Hillsborough Tce in Hamilton where a man died after falling from a bank onto the road.

Police are working to identify an overseas businessman who died in Hamilton after falling down steep bank and over a 5 metre retaining wall onto the road.

The 32-year-old man was found unconscious with head injuries on Hillsborough Tce, in central Hamilton about 1am.

St John Ambulance received a call from a passing motorist who reported a man was lying on the road.

Police said an ambulance crew attended but were unable to save the man who died at the scene.

Waikato Police spokesman Andrew McAlley said police were treating the death as unexplained and were keeping an "open mind" about what had occured.

Detectives would be undertaking an area canvas of the neighbourhood to determine the path that led to the man's death.

This would include reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to owners of bars and businesses in the central business district.

He said police were still working to find out where the man was staying and how long he was in the country.

Firefighters rescue dog trapped in gap between walls - March 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles County firefighters got creative to rescue a dog that had fallen into a six-inch-wide gap in West Hollywood, California.

Inspector Randall Wright says a dozen firefighters were called to the scene Monday afternoon. They found a 60-pound dog wedged upside down between a house wall and a retaining wall.

Wright says every time the dog whimpered, he slid further.

Firefighters couldn't just pull him out, so they improvised. They slid a pole under the dog, tied webbing ropes to his front paws, soaped up his fur and pulled.

They wriggled the dog out far enough to grab his back paws. A few tugs, and the pooch was free.

Wright says the dog appeared healthy, and neighbors returned him to his family.

It's unclear how he got stuck.

Pensioner who went to 'a number of pubs for lunch' crashed and left car nose-down - March 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A motorist who drove his car into the side of a house, leaving it wedged nose-down against a wall, has vowed never to get behind the wheel again.

Andrew Hawthorn, 65, was trying to find his way out of a car park in Buckfastleigh but instead sped through a garden fence and over a retaining wall.

He had to be rescued by firefighters from his vertical vehicle which became wedged nose-down between the wall and the side of a property.

He told magistrates in Torquay who banned him from driving for 20 months, I will probably never drive again, it seems like the right move to me.

The incident happened on February 8.

The court was told Hawthorne had been for a lunchtime drink in a number of Buckfastleigh pubs when he decided to get into his car.

A witness told police he appeared to be muttering to himself and walking slightly unsteadily towards his Honda Jazz.

He was seen to drive towards the exit of the car park on Mardle Way but instead of leaving safely by the usual route drove through a fence and over the retaining wall.

The car was left vertical between the garden wall and a block of flats.

West Greene board moved forward on retaining wall replacement - February 28, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: February 27, 2015

    By Bob Niedbala

    Staff Writer

ROGERSVILLE West Greene School Board opened proposals from contractors Thursday to rebuild the failed retaining wall at the new elementary center.

The board solicited proposals under an emergency provision to rebuild the 760-foot-long wall behind the new school after it was discovered collapsed the morning of Nov. 7.

Proposals were received from two companies: Burchick Construction Co. of Pittsburgh and Brayman Construction Corp. of Saxonburg.

The proposals will be reviewed by the districts construction manager, Aecom, formerly URS, and a contract will be awarded based on the best value method of bidding, said Ron Miller of URS.

The companies proposals will be evaluated based on factors including the companies qualifications, approach to the project, experience and fees, Miller said.

The board may be ready to award a contract for the project at its building and grounds committee meeting Thursday.

During the pre-board meeting, Donald R. Green, a geotechnical specialist with Michael Baker International, gave an update on the design of the new retaining wall.
