Every year the Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress recognizes and honors outstanding roofing workers from various U.S. regions with their Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. To be a successful roofing contractor, distributor or supplier you must have reliable, dedicated employees. Among those employees usually one stands out. The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress' Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards program identifies and honors a maximum of 10 outstanding roofing workers.
One of the winners for 2013-14 is Ryan Watts, foreman for Jurin Roofing Services, Inc. Ryan Watts is a shining example of what hard work, commitment and going above and beyond the call of duty can bring. He started with Jurin Roofing Services as a novice in 2004. In the first two years he mastered the many complex nuances of roofing to become a foreman. His eagerness, capability to learn quickly and strong leadership skills have quickly made him a top notch roofing foreman. Ryan keeps the job site organized and running smoothly and efficiently while still achieving perfection in roofing and contentment among his crew members.
Outside of work Ryan is a volunteer fire fighter for the Milford Township Fire Department. His love of helping people has carried through since his childhood. I can remember watching the fire trucks in the parades as a kid and thinking about how much I wanted to be a fireman and help people when I grew up. Ryan has now been a volunteer fire fighter for 16 years which requires a high level of commitment. He also helps the community in many other ways as a firefighter by talking with children at schools about fire safety and prevention, helping run fundraisers, and helping bring the community together by helping to run fairs and street carnivals during the summer. Ryan has also recently been awarded the Community Service and Public Education Firemark Award though Liberty Mutual Insurance Company for his everyday self-sacrifice and tireless efforts to protect and promote public safety.
Winning a Most Valuable Player (MVP) award is an outstanding accomplishment and great honor. Companies nominate their employees who deserve to be recognized for exceptional achievements and contributions to the roofing industry in five categories. MVPs are role models who demonstrate work-related and personal goals to which others aspire. Through this program, you can nominate your MVP for an award to formally recognize his or her outstanding contributions.
In addition, one of the MVP winners will be chosen to be Professional Roofing's Best of the Best. Professional Roofing and OMG Roofing Products Inc. co-sponsor this elite recognition. In addition to a special prize, the winner will be featured in an article in Professional Roofing.

Plan can help small businesses grow -

After brothers Prentiss and Frank Baker started working in the family business, they realized they would need to increase Baker Roofing's revenue if they wanted a salary.
It was 1969 and the company, which was founded by the Baker brothers' grandfather, had about 17 employees and nearly $1 million in revenue. The brothers, however, needed to do more.
Over the years, the brothers built partnerships and expanded the company's geographic reach and its offerings.
Now the Raleigh, N.C.-based company has 12 satellite offices across the Southeast and employs about 1,250. Construction resource Engineering News-Record ranked the company's nearly $160 million in revenue in 2012 as the third-largest roofing firm in the nation.
Frank Baker, 66, now serves as vice chairman on the company's board and Prentiss Baker, 70, serves as chairman.
Baker, which offers services such as new roofing, masonry restorations, roof replacement, repairs and maintenance, has built and restored roofs at universities, institutions and homes across the state and country. Their projects have included the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, N.C., and the Nashville Music City Center.
Growth in a labor-intensive business requires management, supervision and skilled people familiar with the company's standards and expectations, Frank and Prentiss Baker said.
"You need to grow from strength, and not just say, 'I am going to be a $10 million company,'" said Prentiss Baker.
Jim McHugh, owner of Massachusetts-based strategy and consulting firm McHugh & Co., said leaders of a growing company have to work together and be willing to let go of some control.
"A CEO who believes they have to do it all themselves isn't going to grow," he said.

Wayne, NJ GAF, North America's largest roofing manufacturer, is honored to have won two awards in The MobileWebAward Competition. The awards are given by the Web Marketing Association to honor excellence in mobile websites and apps, recognize the individuals and organizations responsible, and showcase the best in award-winning mobile development.
Awarded "Best Manufacturing Mobile Application" was GAF Colors, an application that provides the user with easy navigation of the GAF residential-shingle portfolio by grouping residential shingles by color. The app provides stunning images of the shingles and allows the user to see all of the shingle-color options that are available to help beautify their home, all at the touch of a finger.
GAF Roofing Wizard received the award for "Outstanding Mobile Application." GAF designed its Roofing Wizard app to simplify the often-confusing process of selecting the right roofing system for one's home. The platform walks customers through the selection of shingle color, style, roofing system components, and warranty options, which helps roofing contractors more easily close sales with homeowners.
"It is truly an honor to be recognized as a leader in the newly emerging space of mobile platforms," stated Ted Marcopolus, Vice President of Marketing Services at GAF. "As a company, we focus on providing innovative solutions to our customers, and we are proud to contribute to that core-company value through our marketing efforts."
For 15 years, The Web Marketing Association has produced the annual WebAward Competition, the premier annual website-award competition that names the best websites in 96 industries, setting the standard of excellence for all website development. The organization is made up of Internet marketing, online advertising, PR, and top website design professionals who share an interest in improving the quality of online advertising, internet marketing, and website promotion.

About GAF Founded in 1886, GAF has become the largest roofing manufacturer in North America. The company's products include a comprehensive portfolio of steep-slope and commercial roofing systems, which are supported by an extensive national network of factory-certified contractors. Its success is driven by its commitment to Advanced Quality, Industry Expertise, and Solutions Made Simple for contractors, specifiers, and property owners alike. In 2011, GAF was the first roofing manufacturer to offer a Lifetime limited warranty on all of its laminated shingles and, in 2012, it introduced the GAF Lifetime Roofing System.
With a focus on social responsibility, GAF has developed Advanced Protection Shingle Technology, which provides superior durability and wind resistance while reducing the use of scarce natural resources. The company has also developed single-ply and asphaltic membranes with superior durability and high reflectivity to meet the most rigorous industry standards while helping commercial property owners and designers reduce energy consumption.
GAF also supports the roofing industry through CARE, the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence, which has provided education to over 125,000 professionals.
