Roofing firm fined for safety failings after accident at Chorley school

A ROOFING firm has been fined for safety failings after a worker suffered life-changing injuries when he fell through a primary school roof.

The 51-year-old narrowly avoided being paralysed when he suffered fractures to his spine, breastbone and ribs in the incident at St Marys Primary School, Chorley.

St Helens-based W Swindells & Son (Roofing) Ltd was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive after an investigation found the firm had failed to put measures in place to prevent workers falling through skylights.

Leyland Magistrates Court was told the firm had been hired to replace the roof on the school on Hornchurch Drive. The worker, who does not wish to be named, stepped backwards onto the unsupported felt over a skylight hole and fell three metres to the floor below, striking a partition wall as he fell. He was in hospital for two months and will never be able to return to work due to his injuries.

His wife has also had to give up work to care for him.

The court heard his injuries could have been avoided if Swindells had planned the work properly and arranged for pieces of plywood to be put over the skylight holes.

The firm was fined 4,000 and ordered to pay 3,153 in prosecution costs after pleading guilty to a breach of the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Speaking after the hearing, HSE Inspector Chris Hatton said: The worker could easily have been killed when he fell through the roof and will be affected by his injuries for the rest of his life.

Roofing Supply Group Opens Temporary Branch in Greeley, CO

The Georgian Colonial-style mansion that is the centerpiece of Bethlehem Township's Housenick Park may get a new roof next year.

Township commissioners agreed Monday to have a roofing consultant evaluate the 90-year-old structure.

The consultant would be Wilkes-Barre-based Mark Sobek Roofing Consulting, which would develop specifications for installation of a new slate roof and provide the commissioners with all the materials necessary to put the job out for bids.

Sobek came recommended by township resident and former Commissioner Bill Berry, who said the company was used for restoration of the 20,000-square-foot roof on the 19th century Sullivan County Courthouse in LaPorte.

Commissioner Tom Nolan said the consultant will examine the mansion's roof and then submit the cost of providing a prepared bid package with all necessary construction specifications.

"If we want to move forward with this, we need to contact these people,'' Nolan said.

Commissioner Mike Hudak said one of the main points of hiring a consultant is to get a professional structural evaluation of the roof.

"That's what we're looking for. We want to cover all our bases,'' he said.

After the meeting, Nolan said if the process moves at a nominal pace, installation of the new roof could start in spring 2014.

But he said a lot depends on the cost and how it will be paid, meaning whether money would be used from the $2 million trust fund left to the township by the Housenick estate or through fundraising.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A local contractor gave a Grand Rapids woman a new roof on her house after seeing a Target 8 investigation.

Amanda Cornell said an unlicensed contractor who lived near her in Grand Rapids' Alger Heights neighborhood sweet-talked her into doing the job. He took $5,000 from her, she said, but left a leaky roof.

Contractor Ed Moore of Moore & Sons Roofing saw the July Target 8 investigation and stepped up. He got ABC Supply to donate materials and MCM Rentals to provide a dumpster to carry away the bad roof.

He and his crew donated their time and got the job done over the weekend.

"I felt bad for the single mom getting taken like that," Moore said. "So we decided to go out and put a new roof on for her."

After her bad experience, Cornell said she was grateful for Moore's help.

"After two weeks watching a horrendous roofer destroy my house, on one day they fixed it. So it's really amazing," Cornell said.

She said Moore treated her like a paying customer, but told her not to worry about the cost.

For many of us down here on the ground, rooftops are spaces that generally stay out of sight and out of mind.

But as urban areas across the country continue to grow, so do their environmental impacts. And some folks are beginning to look up to realize there is a vast amount of space yet to be utilized for green infrastructure: rooftops.

In Ephrata, GSM Roofing is tapping into the trend, and turning its own roof green with a 7,500-square-foot vegetative roof.

On Friday, Sept. 13, GSM workers finished planting more than 15,000 plants atop the company's newly renovated location at 345 S. Reading Road.

The so-called "green roof" will help insulate the building while also absorbing water, lessening stormwater runoff.

"We believe in environmental responsibility," GSM president Reed Gooding said. "We want to lead by example."

Gooding's family company began its first vegetative roof project five years ago when it covered a 38,000-square-foot roof in vegetation at Millmont Elementary School in Reading. Since then, GSM has been doing three or four vegetative roofs a year, Gooding said.

Reed Gooding and his brother Will Gooding are also founding members of the not-for-profit organization Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing. CEIR developed a rating system called Roofpoint that awards points and certificates for environmental sustainability in roofing, similar to the LEED rating system for energy efficiency.

Roofpoint, Gooding said, has now become a national standard in roofing.
