Avoid Roofing Problems During the Winter, by Reviewing the Top 5 Winter Roofing Dangers from Reroof America - December 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Reroof America Contractors Reviews the top five winter roofing dangers; and how to avoid making a roofing mistake that causes a roof leak.

Edmond, OK (PRWEB) November 30, 2012

Reroof America Reviews the top five winter roof problems / precautions as:

1.Ice dams Ice dams will happen over warm attic space near the outside wall of the house. If your house is not properly ventilated, and there is no ice and water shield installed, then a roof leak is likely. Most northern states have code requirements for ice and water shield at all the eaves. However, this is still a problem in southern states where there is periodic times with snow accumulation and where ice and water shield is not required by code, so the extra roof protection is usually passed up by the property owner for a cheaper price.

2.. Failure to seal Most roofing manufacturers will recommend that temperatures be at least 40 degrees Fahrenheit in order for asphalt shingles to seal. Roofs installed below that are at risk to blow of and of wind driven rain and ice to get underneath them. There is no shortcut here the only thing that is capable of properly sealing asphalt shingles is the sun and warmer temperatures. Never attempt to artificially seal a roof as it may void the manufacturers warranty.

3.Snow shovels Snow shovels are for the ground not the roof. Sometimes we get requests to remove snow from roofs it is our policy to decline its too dangerous and can cause severe roof damage and more roof leaks.

4.Debris removal During the fall trees shed leaves and small branches fall. With wind storms, larger branches can also get blown on to roofs. Keeping a clear roof service is a matter of proper roof maintenance. Left unattended, debris and foreign objects on the roof can cause leaking or more severe roofing problems.

5.Christmas lights Christmas lights fastened directly in to the roofs surface is one of the most common mistakes home owners can make in reducing the life of their roof and allowing the potential for roof leaks.

Reroof America recommends consulting a professional roofing contractor for any roofing problems, as the problems may not be exactly what you think. Often times do it yourselfers cause more roof problems than they fix but understandably with the right intentions.

Beacon Roofing Reports In Line – Analyst Blog - December 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc. (BECN) reported fourth-quarter 2012 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of 60 cents, in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate and 7% higher than the year-ago quarter. Higher sales on the back of accretive acquisitions and gross margin expansion contributed to the growth, partially offset by higher operating expenses. Including special items, EPS in the quarter stood at 58 cents, down 13% year over year from 67 cents.

    Operational Update

Total revenue increased 4% year over year to $598 million, falling short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $600 million. Organic sales declined 5.6% in the quarter. In existing markets, complementary product sales increased 1.2% while both residential and non-residential roofing product sales decreased 3.3% and 10.5%, respectively. The year-ago quarter included the benefit from substantial roofing activities due to the hail storms in spring 2011.

Cost of goods sold increased 1.3% to $448 million in the quarter. Gross profit rose 13% to $150 million. Gross margin contracted 190 basis points to 25% from the year-ago quarter. Operating income in the reported quarter inched up 1% to $48 million with operating margin dipping 20 basis points to 8.1%.

    Fiscal 2012 Performance

Beacon Roofing's adjusted EPS in fiscal 2012 jumped 44% year over year to $1.67, helped by increased sales and gross margins, somewhat offset by higher operating expenses and a higher income tax provision. EPS was in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Including special items, EPS stood at $1.58 compared with $1.27 in the prior year.

Total revenue increased 12% year over year to $2.04 million, in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Revenues benefited from increased re-roofing and remodeling activities in the first half, including the impact from improved weather conditions and stronger business in several markets that experienced storms last year and by higher average selling prices.

    Financial Position

Cash and cash equivalents declined to $40.2 million as of September 30, 2012 from $143 million as of September 30, 2012, mainly due to payback of debt this year and acquisitions. Total debt amounted to $277.8 million as of September 30, 2012, compared with $327.1 million as of September 30, 2012. Debt-to-capitalization ratio improved to 30% as of September 30, 2012 from 38% as of September 30, 2012.

Cash flow from operating activities improved to $85 million during the year compared with $79 million in the prior year due to higher net income and from higher non-cash charges this year, partially offset by the impact from less favorable changes in working capital.

USACE Team Supporting Sandy Recovery Efforts
USACE has more than 3000 employees within the North Atlantic Division, and at the peak of response activities an additional 990 team members from other USACE divisions were engaged to support the response mission. USACE debris teams are in ports, waterways and coastal areas in NJ and NY clearing debris along the Atlantic seaboard. Thirty-five debris teams are assisting local NY and NJ authorities. Nearly 330000 cubic yards of debris have been removed to date. Planning response teams also are assisting with debris management, infrastructure assessment, temporary roofing, critical public facilities, and temporary housing. With local authorities USACE concentrated pumping efforts at 14 critical locations as determined by local officials. Pumping is complete at all 14 locations. During de-watering operations USACE controlled 162 pumps and removed more than 475 million gallons of water equivalent to 720 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The USACE Water Delivery Mission is complete. USACE provided 512 truckloads (18000 liters per load) of water to NY, NJ, PA, and WV.
