Museum renovations are under way - May 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Extensive interior renovations are under way at the Jackson County Central Historical Society Museum in Lakefield.

Work began the last week of March.

Funding for the updating and remodeling of the museum came from savings the museum experienced thanks to a donation from an area farmer that left funds to pay for a new roof for museum as well as the updating of the museum HVAC system.

Each year, the (county) commissioners give us funds as a line item on their annual budget, said society director Mike Kirchmeier. That is $60,000 a year for everything all of the expenses to operate the museum. The funds we have beyond that are raised here.

While project contractor Horkey Construction of Heron Lake works on the front portion of the museum building, Sohn Electric of Jackson is working on the backroom, Kirchmeier said, putting in 20 new, energy-efficient fixtures and bulbs. Sohn Electric added transformers and motion detectors to the lights as well.

The backroom lights work on a motion-detecting system where any motion causes the lights to come on when a person enters the room, Kirchmeier said. They stay on for 30 minutes and stay on as long as there is some motion in the room. Then they shut down after that timeframe if no motion is detected.

In order for the work to be done on the front room of the museum, a lot of items had to be moved, Kirchmeier noted. Displays like the depot had to be moved, as well as the front office. But there were many additional individual items, showcases and displays that had to be moved about too.

The depot was moved near the Heron Lake display in the third room and the office was tore out so the contractors could work there, Kirchmeier said. Moving the depot and removing the office opened up the front room space, but it also left open spaces on the interior walls that needed to be sheetrocked and insulated.

Volunteer Todd Post has been doing the insulating and sheetrock work on those areas of the museum.

Mike Horkey is working on the new drop ceiling framework for the new ceiling in the front room, Kirchmeier said. Remodeling the front room, adding the drop ceiling with its white tiles and replacing the old light fixtures there with larger light fixtures will make the front room brighter and more inviting.

Thibodaux man turns spare room into arcade - April 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Monday, April 28, 2014 at 8:32 a.m. Last Modified: Monday, April 28, 2014 at 8:32 a.m.

Twenty-three-year-old Coby Cancienne took an add-on to his parents' house and turned it into a combination arcade and man cave. A man arcave, perhaps.

Every single day I come back here and sit down in my computer chair, and I look around. ... You really can't get bored back here, he said.

Upon entrance to Cancienne's arcade cave, only the games are impressive. Set against a typical garage setting is a sit down shooter, the newest acquisition, which is lined up alongside other popular titles, including Golden Tee, Cruisin' the World and Joust. Several other games don't yet operate, though Cancienne said he plans to refurbish each machine in the future.

The beeps, boops, whizzes and digital music associated with any two-bit arcade experience increase the deeper you traverse into rooms that become a mesh of arcade extravagance and Cancienne's artistic vision.

The back room is crammed full of popular titles, including Ms. Pac-Man, Mortal Kombat 4 and Super Mario. The room has a unique arcade feel with light coming only from the games, glow-in-the-dark stars and additional lighting Cancienne added.

Though the three rooms themselves are small even for a former salon/snow ball shop the space seems to expand with every flashing arcade Cancienne has managed to fit in his limited space.

The connecting room is the smallest of the three and contains only two arcade games, including Castlevania.

In the middle of the room sits a wooden chair that looks like it was meant for royalty. From his throne, Cancienne will peruse the Internet in search of other games to add to his collection. The first on his list Galaga.

Like a real legit Galaga. I want one of those so bad, he said.

Victorian Village home on remodeling tour features master retreat once imagined as playroom - April 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Attic for adults Home and Garden More Home & Garden On The House By Jim Weiker The Columbus Dispatch Sunday April 27, 2014 8:42 AM

When Jenny Klaus and Mike Falkenhain sought extra living space in their Victorian Village home several years ago, they knew they could find it in the huge unfinished attic.

But the couple wasnt sure how to use the space. With one of their children then in preschool, they considered finishing the space as a playroom. As the children grew, however, the couples needs changed.

By the time they decided to move forward on the project last year, they needed a master suite more than a playroom.

Working with Ketron Custom Builders of Granville, the couple turned 1,400 square feet of unfinished attic space into an adult retreat a master bedroom and bathroom, an exercise room, a walk-in closet and a sitting area.

The results will be open to visitors next weekend during the annual Home Improvement Showcase sponsored by the central Ohio chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.

The Victorian Village home is one of 16 stops on the tour, which showcases home renovations from the basement to the attic.

Klaus and Falkenhain, who are both doctors, have enjoyed their attic master suite for six months.

Theres nothing I dont like about it, Klaus said.

The room seemingly a natural extension of the house is lighted by windows on three sides, including a massive half-circle below the 17-foot-high roof pitch that spreads moonlight through the room.

Library Plan Pits de Blasio Pledge Against Mayoral Role - April 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

While running for mayor last year, Bill de Blasio joined demonstrators on the steps of the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue to denounce a $300 million renovation of the marble edifice as a dramatic alteration of a crown jewel.

Now in City Hall with the power to stop the project, as he implored his predecessor to do, de Blasio hasnt made a decision on the plan, said Marti Adams, his spokeswoman. The mayor kept $151 million in his preliminary budget for the remodeling, with his final spending plan due next month.

The proposal seeks to draw more people to the iconic main branch while saving more than $7 million a year by shutting down two nearby library buildings. It would consolidate their operations inside an 80,000-square-foot atrium created by ripping out a seven-level book stack, hailed as an engineering marvel in a 1911 cover story by Scientific American magazine.

Opponents trying to preserve the stacks say the Beaux Arts temple of culture will no longer be the worlds pre-eminent free research institution when about 40 percent of its 9.9 million hard-to-find volumes must be retrieved from repositories more than 50 miles away. Neighborhood activists say the money earmarked for the renovation would be better spent on the systems 88 overused and underfunded local branches.

Were trying to improve a masterpiece, and none of the people involved are Michelangelos and da Vincis, said David Levering-Lewis, a historian who researched his Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of early civil rights champion W.E.B. Dubois at the library. He was paraphrasing architecture critic Ada Louise Huxtable, also a Pulitzer Prize winner, who denounced the plan in the Wall Street Journal in December 2012, a month before she died.

Anthony Marx, 55, president of the library since 2011, says hes listening to the opposition and taking into account de Blasios questions about the librarys future. He holds a vision, he says, of a more democratic institution welcoming more people than the current 2.4 million who use it now. About 30 percent of the current space is open to the public, he said.

Ashley's closes for remodeling, hopes to revamp image - April 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The powers that be behindAshley'sin Little Rock's historicCapital Hotelsawthe growing food revolution in Little Rock and felt that things were passing them by.

"This used to be the fun destination for people to come and have a good time," said marketing director Chuck Magill."Now it's a place that people might just think of for an anniversary or other special occasion."

Food trends have changed, and the elegant yet rather stuffy dining room of Ashley's has become a symbol of a past that is swiftly being replaced by restaurants that are more casual and as Magill put it, "more fun."

There have been months of deliberation, as the Ashley's team has debated the many ways they could revamp the restaurant's image without lowering its impeccable standards.

The planning for this new vision began with the hiring of James Beard award-winning chef Jol Antunes, a world-traveling French chef who has found a home in Arkansas, which he says reminds him of his home in Southern France. Antunes is a quiet man most at home in the kitchen, but he lights up when describing his food, and after tasting it last night at a special food writer event, I can certainly understand why he's so excited about the new menu.

The event last night was like a who's who of Central Arkansas foodies, and I had fun catching up with Eat Arkansas alumnus and authorKat Robinson, photographer Grav Weldon,Fancy Pants Foodieblogger Christie Ison,Little Rock Foodcast'sSteve Shuler, andArkansas Cooks'Mary Twedt among others. But apart from the camaraderie and sparkling conversation, there was something else to be excited about: the food.

Each dish we tried was well-executed and showed an attention to detail and craft that was among the best I've ever seen. Of particular note was a dish of seared scallops with potato gnocchi, artichokes, and sundried tomatoes, which featured scallops that the hotel brings in still alive to avoid the decrease in quality that comes from getting the shellfish frozen. The scallop was tender and sweet, seared just to the point where the natural sugars caramelized, and the tart, savory tomatoes made for a perfect counter-balance to the delicate morsel of shellfish. This dish was followed by what I consider the highlight of the night: a braised Berkshire pork cheek with truffle that was meltingly tender and deeply satisfying. Antunes' dishes are simple, but that makes their excellence that much more impressive, because each ingredient must speak for itself or the whole structure will fall apart.

Dessert was also memorable, and Antunes' history as a pastry chef was apparent in each dish. A raspberry cheesecake with coconut sorbet was the perfect balance of fruit, tangy mascarpone cheese, and sweet, cold sorbet. The chocolate lovers in the room swooned over a decadent chocolate souffle with vanilla chantilly, served warm with a crispy outer shell that gave way to a creamy, molten middle that was tempered by the cool vanilla cream. As a preview of things to come, this gave us all high hopes for the future of Ashley's under Antunes' guidance, which is sure to continue and grow Ashley's reputation as the go-to restaurant in Little Rock for excellent food.

Ashley's will close on May 2 for remodeling of both the dining room and the kitchen, a project that Magill said should take around two months, and result in a restaurant that will bear a new name (although no one would tell us what that name would be). In addition to updating the decor and feel of the dining area, the remodel will also turn the kitchen into a more efficient work space, while adding new banquet and bakery facilities that will expand what the restaurant is able to offer. It's sad that we'll be without one of our premier restaurants for a few weeks, but if last night's dinner is any indication of what is to come, I can assure you all that it will be worth the wait.

Twin Cities Spring Remodeling Trend Favors Open Light-Filled Homes - April 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Minneapolis, Twin Cities, Minnesota (PRWEB) April 24, 2014

Twin Cities homeowners have survived long winter months and are savoring brighter days with temperatures ideal for home remodeling projects. CBS Money Watch says windows are big in their announcement of home trends for 2014, and NAHB offers tips on home care after a severe winter. With little urging, homeowners in the Twin Cities are embracing brighter days by contracting remodelers for a newer, cleaner, and more updated look for a light-filed home.

"Home buyers in the Twin Cites love a home with open spaces that permit bright sunlight to flow better," says Jenna Thuening, owner of Home Destination. Buyers love windows and skylights that bring light into the home during the day and yet meet their desire to have an energy efficient home. If you are remodeling, prioritize desired home features such as daylighting, solar heating, shading, ventilation, and aesthetic value.

One misconception is that a home featuring grand windows is better suited to southern states that have more sunlight. Another misconception is that a sunlight filled home is only for Twin Cities luxury home owners. We have a good amount of sun in Minnesota compared to other markets, Excelsior-based Charlie Pickard, co-owner of Aladdin Solar, LLC told CBS Minnesota. Germany has ten times the number of installed systems, but we have 30 percent better sun than them. We are similar to some areas of Texas and Florida.

Home Destination has compiled a brief list of comments by home remodeling professionals about the trend toward open light-filled homes.

For more details on the comments see the article Buyers Want Open Light-Filled Homes & Energy Efficiency.

Recipients of the Day Light Project is the UK said, "The natural light really has had an impact on daily life. We wake refreshed each morning, wanting to get out earlier and be more active and it also makes working from home more enjoyable", according to the article titled F lood your home with natural light and beat the winter blues.

The Twin Cities Parade of Homes is offering a new event this year to meet high consumer interest in gracious well-appointed homes. Called the Artisan Home Tour, happening June 7 - 15, it will offer homeowners a first-hand opportunity to see new open space, light-filled home designs.

Before beginning a home remodeling project, consider hiring an interior designer to help you craft a home design that ensures a smarter, more practical use of space and light. "Focus on where you spend the most time. Lighting is able to drastically change the way your home looks and your mood. It can make a room feel more comfortable or become more functional to different tasks," advises Thuening.

Kim Jong Un Visits Songdowon International Children's Camp - April 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Pyongyang, April 21 (KCNA) -- Kim Jong Un, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, first chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army, visited the Songdowon International Children's Camp where its remodeling project is near completion.

He went round several places of the camp for hours to learn in detail about the project.

He watched the newly erected statues depicting President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il among children and then moved to the International Friendship Children's Hall.

Making the rounds of the theatre, mountaineering knowledge dissemination room, video games room, library, international friendship room, room for the Children's Union, drawing room, exhibition room for children's works, 4-D simulation cinema and other places of the hall one by one, he said he was very pleased to visit them. "Our architecture has successfully reached the world level," he said with pride.

Recalling that the Party gave an instruction to build a room dedicated to the education in Kim Jong Il's patriotism for implanting patriotism in children, he noted that the Party's intention was translated into a reality in the course of remodeling the camp.

Watching the slogan "We are the happiest in the world!" displayed in the compound of the camp, he said the slogan was very good, adding that it clearly reflected the gratitude of the children in the DPRK to the President and Kim Jong Il and to the Party for projecting them as the king of the country and loving them.

"We are struggling, regarding our trouble as pleasure, in order to enable our children and people to live with nothing to desire more in the world and the slogan helps us undertake any difficult job with pleasure," he said.

He highly appreciated the newly-built outdoor playground, gymnasium, indoor swimming pool and water park and archery field, noting that synthetic grass, spectators' seats and wave-style blue roof of the playground were in good harmony and all buildings looked like a beautiful picture and an art work.

He said that the aquarium, aviary and show room for stuffed specimens of animals were built in a peculiar style so that the campers might acquire knowledge about fauna and flora, adding they would like them.

Saying that not only bedrooms, dining halls and kitchens but service facilities of the first and second buildings were suited to the children's minds, he said cooking practice room was built well as intended by the Party so that children might enjoy cooking themselves and prepare varieties of dishes.
