Virginia Tech elated about recruiting class despite losing two targets - February 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Virginia Tech finished the football recruiting season strong despite being spurned by a couple of big-name targets.

The Hokies signed two elite recruits on National Signing Day on Wednesday. Clover Hill’s Joel Caleb, a wide receiver ranked 83rd overall and first in the state by ESPN, picked Tech over West Virginia and Ohio State, and Centreville’s Ken Ekanem, a defensive end ranked sixth in the state by ESPN, chose the Hokies over Notre Dame.

The additions of Caleb and Ekanem to Tech’s recruiting haul eased some of the sting from losing Brookville defensive tackle Korren Kirven, ranked 100th in the country and second in Virginia by ESPN, to Alabama and from a late de-commitment from Boca Raton, Fla., linebacker JaWand Blue.

“I really feel good about this class,” Tech coach Frank Beamer said. “I mean really, really good.”

The Hokies’ strong finish earned their class a No. 20 ranking by Rivals.com — their highest from the recruiting website since finishing 18th in 2008 — and a No. 25 ranking by Scout.com.

Rivals and Scout both ranked Tech’s class fourth among ACC schools. The Hokies, who have won four ACC championships and have been on the losing end in two other ACC title games since 2004, have only once been ranked better than fourth in Rivals’ ACC recruiting rankings, when they finished third in 2005.

The Hokies signed 28 players in all, 17 of whom came from Virginia. According to ESPN’s rankings, Tech signed four of the top 10 players in the state and nine of the top 20.

“The state of Virginia is always going to be our home base, and I think we’ve had a tremendous year,” Beamer said. “The caliber of kid that we’ve been able to get there is tremendous.”

Tech’s 2012 class features seven four-star recruits and seven high school All-Americans, the most since 2007.
Three of those All-Americans are tailbacks — J.C Coleman, Drew Harris and Dan River’s Trey Edmunds, who doubles as a linebacker. The Hokies signed five tailbacks in all, the second most of any position.

“We’re going to give them all a shot and figure out what the best options are right now, but certainly that had to be a priority, so to come away with the quality of kids we got at that position, that’s got to be a big plus,” Beamer said.

Tech, which must replace its top two tailbacks from last season, should have plenty of options at the position. Coleman, who enrolled in January, could have a chance to earn significant playing time this spring. He will share carries with redshirt freshman Michael Holmes during spring practice.

It’s still unclear as to where Edmunds will play when practice starts in the fall. There’s a chance, Beamer said, that he could eventually play on both offense and defense.

“I think he’s going to have to concentrate on one or the other initially, but as time goes by, I see him as a guy who can really play and help the program on both sides,” Beamer said.

In addition to Tech’s class of scholarship players, Beamer said the program added a strong group of walk-ons as well.

“I can’t mention names because they haven’t signed a national letter, but we’ve got several that gave up scholarships to other places to come here and knowing our success with a John Engelberger or Cody Grimm or Jarrett Ferguson, to me that’s really exciting too as far as our recruiting goes,” Beamer said.

DC Entertainment Returning to 'Watchmen' with 7-Book Prequel Series (Exclusive Image) - February 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

In what will surely be a controversial move, DC Entertainment is returning to the universe of Watchmen, the acclaimed 1986 graphic novel by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons.

This summer, the company will publish seven prequel comic book mini-series called Before Watchmen, each week unleashing a new title focusing on the characters’ lives and adventures in the years before the original story.

PHOTOS: 10 Top Summer Superheroes Of All Time

Those characters -- Rorschach, Comedian, Dr. Manhattan, Nite Owl (whose first issue cover is seen exclusively here), Ozymandias, Silk Spectre and the 1940s superteam The Minutemen – will be featured in stories from such notable comics creators as Darwyn Cooke, J. Michael Straczynski, Brian Azzarello, Adam Hughes, Andy Kubert and Joe Kubert, among others.

Watchmen is the top-selling graphic novel of all time and was part of a wave of comics in the 1980s that redefined the genre. The work has remained untouched, never integrated into the larger DC Comics universe, due partially to the reverence by fanboys and partially to Moore’s insistence that it is a singular vision. (He also came out against the 2009 movie adaptation, Watchmen, directed by Zack Snyder.)

DC, which owns the characters, is now saying that enough time has passed that it's okay to explore new stories featuring the Watchmen.

"It's our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant," said DC Entertainment co-publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee in a statement. "After twenty five years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told.

STORY: DC Entertainment Teams With Aid Groups to Raise $2 Million-Plus, Awareness for Hunger Crisis in Africa

The company has also enlisted the blessing of Gibbons, a move that should mollify many fans. “The original series of Watchmen is the complete story that Alan Moore and I wanted to tell. However, I appreciate DC's reasons for this initiative and the wish of the artists and writers involved to pay tribute to our work. May these new additions have the success they desire,” he said in his statement.

Straczynski, known as the co-creator of the sci-fi show Babylon 5, as well as a writer of Superman and Spider-Man stories, will pen the four-issue Nite Owl series (which has art by Andy and Joe Kubert) as well as the four-issue Dr. Manhattan (art by Hughes). yes">  He spoke to THR's Heat Vision to explain why the time is right for a return to the Watchmen universe, the writing process for the books, and his plans for Nite Owl.

Heat Vision: How did you become involved with Before Watchmen?

    J. Michael Straczynski: The short answer is: I was asked. The long answer: Ever since Dan DiDio was handed the reins (along with Jim Lee) over at DC, he's been making bold, innovative moves that might have scared the hell out of anyone else. At a time in the industry when big events tend to be “Okay, we had Team A fight Team B last year, so this year we’re gonna have Team B fight team C!” Dan has chosen to revitalize lines, reinvent worlds and come at Watchmen head-on. It was, I think, about two years ago that he first mentioned that he was considering the idea, and he’s to be commended for fighting to make this happen.

    PHOTOS: Comic-Book Characters In Dispute

HV: Was there any trepidation on your end to be part of this?

JMS: Anyone who sets foot into the Watchmen universe and isn’t just a little nervous should be given a few days of electroshock therapy. I’ve always considered Watchmen to be one of the best graphic novels ever written, and when it came out back in 1986 I was as blown away as everyone else. Just masterful.

The thing is, though, writers are always being asked to play in amazing universes created by other people, and you can’t let that scare you.  If Darren Aronofsky can plan for a Noah’s Ark movie, Steven Spielberg can consider tackling the story of Moses, and Mel Gibson can do another Bible movie, I think it’s safe to say that the Watchmen universe is fair game, provided that you approach the work with clean hands and good intent.

HV: How do you think this will be judged and accepted considering 1) Alan Moore's stance against continuing the Watchmen universe, and 2) the sacred hold Watchmen has on readers?

JMS: The perception that these characters shouldn’t be touched by anyone other than Alan is both absolutely understandable and deeply flawed. As good as these characters are – and they are very good indeed – one could make the argument, based on durability and recognition, that Superman is the greatest comics character ever created. But I don’t hear Alan or anyone else suggesting that no one other than Shuster and Siegel should have been allowed to write Superman. Certainly Alan himself did this when he was brought on to write Swamp Thing, a seminal comics character created by Len Wein.

Leaving aside the fact that the Watchmen characters were variations on pre-existing characters created for the Charleton Comics universe, it should be pointed out that Alan has spent most of the last decade writing very good stories about characters created by other writers, including Alice (from Alice in Wonderland), Dorothy (from Wizard of normal">Oz), Wendy (from Peter Pan), as well as Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man, Jeyll and Hyde, and Professor Moriarty (used in the successful League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). I think one loses a little of the moral high ground to say, “I can write characters created by Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle and Frank Baum, but it’s wrong for anyone else to write my characters.”

The whole point of having great characters is the opportunity to explore them more deeply with time, re-interpreting them for each new age. That DC allowed these characters to sit on a shelf for over two decades as a show of respect is salutary, but there comes a time when good characters have to re-enter the world to teach us something about ourselves in the present.

HV: Why do a prequel and not a sequel?

JMS: Alan spends a lot of time in the original Watchmen teasing out details of the history of our characters before the time in which the graphic novel is set. In so doing, he gave us an excellent road map that would let us hew more truly to the characters than by telling a story that takes place after those events. The first time all of us got together in New York to solidify the storyline, we each had copies of Watchmen in hand and whenever a question was raised about what happened to whom and when, we’d flip through looking for the slightest clue. I joked at the time that it looked a lot like Saturday afternoon Bible Study.

HV: How did you end up writing Nite Owl and Dr. Manhattan? Did you have a say over which characters you would write?

JMS.: I wanted those characters because they are kind of bookends from a power standpoint. Despite his really cool gadgets, Nite Owl is in many ways the closest we have to a regular guy. He’s not a near-nutbar like Rorschach, he’s not the smartest guy in the world like Ozymandius, doesn’t have the powers of Dr. Manhattan...he’s the most normal guy in the bunch and that means he has to work really hard to get things done. By contrast, Dr. Manhattan has nearly godlike powers. So they’re at opposite ends of the power spectrum, and that contrast appealed to me immensely.

HV: Did the writers work together to any degree?

J.M.S.: There was a summit and we’ve been emailing each other and using a website to upload ideas, scripts, outlines and ask each other questions.  We worked out a ridiculously detailed timeline for all of the characters, and took great pains to not step on each other’s toes. It’s really like a hive-mind in that respect.

HV: Which Nite Owl are you focusing on? (Or both?)

JMS.: My focus is on the second Nite Owl, Dan Dreiberg, though the first Nite Owl shows up in the story, along with many of the other characters.

HV:What is the plot and setting?

JMS.: I wanted to show how Dan became the second Nite Owl, what circumstances led to him as a kid to reach out to the first Nite Owl with the goal of becoming a hero...the road that led him to that point, and where it took him as he assumed that role. I also wanted to show how his friendship with Rorschach began, how it worked while they were together, and why it ultimately fell apart...all of this set against a series of murders that they are drawn into.

HV: Are the prequels all connected?

JMS: There’s some overlap here and there, but it’s more thematic than plot-oriented. I think DC wanted to give each writer the room to really play with the characters he was given without worrying too much about tying it in with everyone else’s story. At some point, the integrity of each of the miniseries would be compromised trying to do that. Instead, we were free to really follow the story of each hero cleanly. One of the things that has bugged me about recent comics publishing “events” is that the individual characters or titles are too often sacrificed to the vested interests of that event; here, DC turned the formula upside down and let the “event” serve the individual characters.

Something I said in the room ended up becoming the thematic core of the series, which is my sense that there are five kinds of truth: the truth you tell to casual acquaintances, the truth you tell to you family and close friends, the truth you tell to only a very few people in your life, the truth you tell yourself and the truth you don't admit even to yourself. So these books are really about what we think we know about these characters, and the truth.

HV: And if this is successful, will there be a sequel to the prequel? And are there any plans to eventually integrate this universe with the broader DC Universe?

JMS: Both of those are questions for Dan DiDio. I’m just glad to have a chance to play with these characters right now. The future will attend to itself, it always does.

Jan. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Michelin today releases its selection of all the 630 restaurants in France that will be recognized next month for serving good, inexpensive meals.

The Bib Gourmand label indicates a restaurant serving three-course meals offering good value for the money, defined as less than 35 euros ($46) in Paris and 29 euros elsewhere. The selection has increased by 140 percent in six years, with more than 120 additions in 2012 alone.

“These restaurants never fail to delight Michelin guide readers with their wide range of styles, from traditional terroir to trendy gastro-bistro, from ethnic adventure to extremely creative,” Michelin said in an e-mailed release.

Michelin’s guide to France is scheduled to be announced on Feb. 27. The Clermont-Ferrand, France-based company is the world’s second-biggest tiremaker, after Bridgestone Corp. It produced its first guide in August 1900, distributed free of charge (until 1920) and intended for chauffeurs.

Here are the new 2012 Bib Gourmand restaurants, with the locality first, followed by the department in parentheses and the restaurant name:

January 31, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL) Bridgeport Bluefish (Bridgeport, Conn. - Jan. 31, 2012) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced their first additions of the 2012 season, signing infielder Luis Lopez and pitcher Jorge Julio. Lopez will enter his fifth season as a member of the Bluefish, while Julio will return for his second campaign in the Park City.

"The Bluefish are proud to welcome back Luis and Jorge as the first signings of 2012," says Bluefish general manager Bob Goughan. "We are looking forward to the upcoming season and filling out our roster in the weeks to come."

Lopez returns for his seventh season in the Atlantic League and 17th of professional baseball. In 121 games with Bridgeport last year, he recorded a .276 batting average with 67 RBI and 59 runs scored in 456 at-bats and also reached a career milestone by collecting his 2,000th career hit. After four successful seasons in the Park City, Luis is now among the all-time Bluefish batting leaders, ranking second in walks (260), third in hits (543), doubles (93) and RBI (276), and fourth in games played (507), at-bats (1,897) and runs scored (264).

The former Major Leaguer spent two seasons in the big leagues, his first coming in 2001 with the Toronto Blue Jays. He spent the next two years with Sacramento (AAA, Athletics) of the Pacific Coast League before returning to the Major Leagues with the Montreal Expos in 2004. The infielder's best season came in 1997 with Single-A Hagerstown (South Atlantic) when he paced the league in hits (180) and batting average (.358), while posting career-highs in doubles (47), extra-base hits (63) and RBI (99). In 1,666 career minor league games, the infielder owns a .299 batting average with 2,043 hits, 409 doubles, 151 home runs, 1,099 RBI and 1,000 runs scored.

Julio makes his way back for his second season in the Atlantic League and 17th of professional baseball. Last year, the former Major Leaguer was a spring training invitee of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization following a successful 2010 campaign with the Bluefish. However, he suffered an arm injury early in camp and was forced to sit out the 2011 season.

Jorge appeared in 55 games for the Bluefish in 2010, striking out 57 batters over the course of 55 innings of work. He finished second in the Atlantic League with 28 saves and ended the season with a stellar 1.15 ERA, the lowest single-season mark for a Bluefish pitcher (minimum 50 innings pitched). Julio also held opposing batters to a .193 batting average and proved to be one of the best hurlers in the Atlantic League last year.

Over his nine-year big league career, the 33-year-old has also spent time with the Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks, Florida Marlins, Colorado Rockies, and Cleveland Indians. He has recorded 17 wins and 99 saves over 453 appearances. Jorge owns a 4.43 ERA with 448 strikeouts in 467 innings pitched, while holding opposing hitters to a .244 batting average. His best season in the Majors came in 2002 as a member of the Orioles. The righthander posted career-bests with a 1.99 ERA, five victories and 67 appearances, while recording 25 saves and 55 strikeouts in 68 innings pitched.

The Bridgeport Bluefish Professional Baseball Club, a charter team in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, plays its home games at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, located off Exit 27 of I-95 on the corner of Broad Street and South Frontage Road in Bridgeport. 2012 season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 203-345-4800. Elizabeth Banks and Paul Reubens Board Charlie Kaufman’s ‘Frank or Francis’ - January 31, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Starting with Being John Malkovich, Charlie Kaufman‘s scripts have generally attracted top-level talent, and a quick glance at the cast list indicates that Frank or Francis will be no exception. Elizabeth Banks and Paul Reubens have just become the latest additions to Kaufman’s Hollywood-skewering musical satire, joining Steve Carell, Jack Black, Nicolas Cage, Catherine Keener, and Kevin Kline. Read more after the jump.

Kaufman’s latest revolves around Frank (Carell), a pretentious filmmaker, and Francis (Black), a popular movie blogger/commentor who takes pleasure in viciously ripping apart Frank’s work online but leads a lonely existence living with his mom offline. Banks is set to play a well-liked actress making comedic stinkers and having an affair with Frank. Herman has been cast as an old-fashioned film critic.

As previously reported, Cage will star as an actor/comedian on the decline, while Kline will play dual roles as the director of the world’s top-grossing film as well as the director’s brother-turned-animatronic head. Keener’s role has not been revealed at this time, though for what it’s worth, female roles outlined in an earlier draft of the script included Frank’s wife, Francis’ love interest, and “a Romanian waitress and two talking ghost-like thumbs who have a Romanian political agenda.” Despite the story that circulated last week, The Hollywood Reporter now confirms that Kate Winslet will not be involved with the project.

The very busy Banks currently stars in Man on a Ledge, and will next appear in March’s The Hunger Games. She’s got another three films lined up for 2012 beyond that: What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Movie 43, and Alex Kurtzman’s Welcome to People. Reubens was most recently seen in Todd Solondz’ Life During Wartime, and is developing a new Pee-wee Herman movie at Universal with Judd Apatow producing. Frank or Francis marks Kaufman’s second directorial effort, after 2008?s Synecdoche, New York.

Blu-Ray/DVD Review Round Up - January 29, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Hot guys in rough and tumble action.. with
heart….yum!  Check out these new offerings for your
    hunkorama home viewing pleasure.

From Touchstone Home Entertainment and DreamWorks
    Pictures

    Real Steel: Blu-Ray/DVD
    Combo

In the near future, Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman)
is a decent boxer who was forced to retire early when huge
9-foot-tall steel robots operated by remote control became the
stars of the ring. Now, Charlie is a small-time promoter who
pieces together scrap bots to travel the underground boxing
    circuit.

When his estranged 11-year-old son Max (Dakota Goyo) is left in
his care, over time, the embittered Charlie feels like a dad
and, together, father and son uncover an older ‘bot who just
might be able to think and almost fight like a human. The three
    start winning… bigtime….together.

Special Features: The “Audio Commentary” by
colorful director Shawn Levy is only on the DVD disc and is
worth a listen. “Real Steel Second Screen: Ringside with
Director Shawn Levy” goes like this.. the app is free to
download from the Apple App store or for a laptop from
    http://www.realsteelsecondscreen.com. Second Screen provides bonus
video content in a picture-in-picture window. You can also view
    without a second device.

“Countdown to the Fight -- The Charlie Kenton Story” – pretends
the character is real and is a “mockumentary with cast members
talking about Charlie’s story, son Max and robot Atom who is
about to fight the famous Zeus robot. Kinda fun. “Making of
Metal Valley” is a really good breakdown of filming Charlie and
Max action in an old scrap yard full of broken, discarded
robots. This is where they find Atom. Really interesting.

“Building the Bots” is a really cool, if short, look at
designing the cool robots and building them both in computer
and the life-sized, on set models which the actors loved.

“Sugar Ray Leonard: Cornerman's Champ” looks at the
contributions of the boxing legend to the film. He had a big
hand in training actor Hugh Jackman to be a believable fighter.
    Hot.

“Deleted & Extended Scenes”- especially entertaining
because they contain a sequence left out of the movie; the
“Deleted Butterfly Storyline”. This expands on son Max’s
background and his new relationship with Charlie. Very cool.
You also get some fun “Bloopers”

Wrapping Up:This heartwarming movie is about
people first, fathers and sons, regaining faith in each other
and in life in general; even the feelings between man and
machine are explored. Evangeline Lilly from TV’s “Lost” is the
love interest and she also packs a punch! Real Steel
is also a major underdog story. You really root for the dad,
son and robot all the way. The effects are amazing, robots are
beyond cool and the fights are really action-packed.  I
loved this movie. You and your buds will too. I’d go buy it for
    sure!

“Abduction Chronicle” is the best for Taylor fans since it is
his personal video account, behind-the-scenes of shooting the
film. “Initiation of an Action Hero” talks about Taylor’s
training and stunt work to become a real action star.  In
“The Fight for the Truth” you get a break-down of the movie’s
many fight sequences and making the movie in general . “Pulled
Punches” is an amusing blooper reel.

Wrapping Up: This film has a confusing
story.  Why is it called “Abduction” anyway? Taylor's
character was never actually abducted.  Whatever, Lautner
is action boy supreme in the film, looks really buff and hot
and you won’t be bored.  A must for Taylor fans.. a rental
    for action/spy movie buffs.

    In Time – DVD

In a futuristic world where you die at 25 if you
can’t literally buy more time, the rich have it easy but the
working class has to slave away to buy each new day! Sucks,
right? Working dude Will Salas (Justin Timberlake) thinks so
too. BTW, his best bud is played by “The Big Bang Theory’s”
    Johnny Galecki.

When a millionaire, tired of living for centuries, gifts Will
his remaining time, Will is falsely accused of his murder and
goes on the run with a bored and beautiful rich gal played by
Amanda Seyfried. They fall in love and are both determined to
    bring down this unfair system.

Special Features:  Only one on the DVD.
    We didn’t get the Blu-Ray.

“Deleted and Extended Scenes”-  There are eight: Some are
cool story additions..when a baby is born.. does it have a
timeclock? Do people just fall over at 25 when they run out of
time? Justin and Amanda steal an armored car, bust into a
millionaire’s house, play strip poker and hide in plain sight
by “dirty” dancing at an outdoor festival.

Wrapping Up: This film not only stars hot
Justin and Amanda but really makes you think about what you
would do in their shoes. Would you gift an about to die person
a few minutes of your own precious time on earth?  Lots of
action and effects round out the morality tale.  A really
fun watch. Recommend a buy for Justin/Amanda fans.. a rental
for a great one time watch.
