Oil company Inpex is shedding around 1,400 jobs from its Icthys construction project near Darwin, forcing many families to brace for a tough Christmas season.

The number of job cuts was planned, with the civil works phase of the LNG project nearing completion.

But unions are upset at the abruptness of the job cuts, saying it is flooding the local market with unemployed blue collar workers at a time when there is traditionally few jobs available in construction.

Sacked worker Kylie Wright said it was a terrible time of year to have no income.

"Over the holiday season, you're kids are going to be let down, your grandkids are going to be let down," she said.

The 43-year-old mother of two said she was angry at the company for the way they handled the layoffs.

"The way they've done it I thought it was wrong. You hop on a bus, go to work, get a tap on the shoulder, back on the bus, off you go home."

More than half of the 1,400 laid off are local tradesmen, such as concreters, plumbers and steel fixers.

Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union NT organiser Shaun Taylor said he was unhappy Inpex continued to hire staff until October in a bid to accelerate work before the wet season arrived.

"If you're going to build something of this calibre in the Northern Territory, the wet season is just part of doing business, and there are ways to get around it," he said.

Autotomy (from the Greek auto- "self-" and tome "severing") or self amputation is the behaviour whereby an animal sheds or discards one or more of its own appendages,[1] usually as a self-defense mechanism to elude a predator's grasp or to distract the predator and thereby allow escape. The lost body part may be regenerated later.

Some geckos,[2][3]skinks,[4][5][6]lizards,[7][8][9]salamanders[10][11][12] and tuatara [13] that are captured by the tail will shed part of the tail structure and thus be able to flee. The detached tail will continue to wriggle, creating a deceptive sense of continued struggle and distracting the predator's attention from the fleeing prey animal. The animal can partially regenerate its tail, typically over a period of weeks. The new section will contain cartilage rather than regenerating vertebrae of bone, and the skin of the regenerated organ generally differs distinctly in colour and texture from its original appearance. The technical term for this ability to drop the tail is caudal autotomy. In most lizards that sacrifice the tail in this manner, breakage occurs only when the tail is grasped with sufficient force, but some animals, such as some species of geckos, can perform true autotomy, throwing off the tail when sufficiently stressed, such as when attacked by ants.[14] Some such lizards, in which the tail is a major storage organ for accumulating reserves, will return to a dropped tail after the threat has passed, and will eat it to recover part of the sacrificed supplies.[15] Conversely, some species have been observed to attack rivals and grab their tails, which they eat after their opponents flee.[16]

Caudal autotomy in lizards takes two forms. In the first form, called intervertebral autotomy, the tail breaks between the vertebrae. The second form of caudal autotomy is intravertebral autotomy, in which there are zones of weakness, fracture planes across each vertebra in the mid-part of the tail. In this second type of autotomy the lizard contracts a muscle to fracture a vertebra, rather than break the tail between two vertebrae.[17]Sphincter muscles in the tail then contract around the caudal artery to minimize bleeding.

At least two species of African spiny mice, Acomys kempi and Acomys percivali, are capable of autotomic release of skin, e.g. upon being captured by a predator. They are the first mammals known to do so.[18] They can completely regenerate the autotomically released or otherwise damaged skin tissue regrowing hair follicles, skin, sweat glands, fur and cartilage with little or no scarring. It is believed that the corresponding regeneration genes could also function in humans.[19]

Autotomy can occur in response to chemical, thermal and electrical stimulation, but is perhaps most frequently a response to mechanical stimulation during capture by a predator. Autotomy occurs in some species of octopus for survival and for reproduction: the specialized reproductive arm (the hectocotylus) detaches from the male during mating and remains within the female's mantle cavity.

Species of (land) slugs in the genus Prophysaon can self-amputate a portion of their tail.[22] There is known autotomy of the tail of sea snail Oxynoe panamensis under persistent mechanical irritation.[23]

Evisceration, the ejection of the internal organs of sea cucumbers when stressed, is also a form of autotomy, and they regenerate the organ(s) lost.[27]

Some sea slugs exhibit autotomy. Both Discodoris lilacina and Berthella martensi will often drop their entire mantle skirt when handled, leading to Discodoris lilacina also being called Discodoris fragilis. The members of Phyllodesmium will drop a large number of their cerata each, on the tip having a large sticky gland that secretes a sticky substance.[28]

Jared "Hefty Lefty" Lorenzen is here (on Twitter) to assuage all your quarterback fears, Arizona Cardinals fans.

After Carson Palmer's replacement Drew Stanton went down Thursday night against the Rams and third-stringer Ryan Lindley took over (while also giving away Bibles online), the former New York Giants QB sneak specialist pitched his services:

Hey, the Twitter pitch worked for former Cardinals kicker Jay Feely, who was on his couch early in the season and is now suited up for the Chicago Bears.

Lorenzen earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Giants in 2007-08 when he served as Eli Manning's backup. The former University of Kentucky standout was last seen slinging footballs in a ridiculous Monster Energy-colored, green scaly uniform for the Northern Kentucky River Monsters, highlights of which you can see below. His reported weight around that time was 320 pounds.

Fortunately Stanton won't need surgery but he's doubtful, at best, for Sunday against Seattle. If the Lefty hit the treadmill around 11 p.m. last night, he ought to be able to sneak under 300 for gametime next Sunday in Week 16.

A run of bad luck for Godalming Town FC continued when the grounds buildings were ransacked last weekend.

The coach of the clubs ladies football team arrived before the match on Sunday (December 7) to find damage to the outbuildings and the clubhouse.

Somebody had tried to break into the sheds and then moved on to the clubhouse and boardroom before being scared off by the alarms.

Glenn Moulton, club secretary, said: They smashed a load of sheds, but we dont think theyve taken anything.

There is nothing of value to take here. Since the break-in, we have taken extra security measures.

The club confirmed the damaged doors had already been replaced and security tightened to ensure there was no repeat of the incident.

The ladies match was able to go ahead while the crime scene was investigated. However, the mens first team drove 80 miles to Royston, in Hertfordshire, only to find the game was cancelled due to a frozen pitch.

The Wey Court ground is also the venue for Little Rays, a breakfast and afterschool club for eight children.

Pauline Cheeseman, who runs the club, said it was a lifeline for parents, and a break-in threatened the toys and games kept for the children to play with, as well as the clubs memorabilia.

The football club has also been hit by flooding and a fire in the past year.

The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the Permian Basin decreased 20 this week to 548, according the weekly rotary rig count released Friday by Houston-based oilfield services company Baker Hughes.

District 8, which includes Midland County, had 316 rigs, down 19.

Texas' rig count was down 24 this week for a statewide total of 872. In other major Texas basins, there were 204 rigs in the Eagle Ford, down two; 57 in the Granite Wash, down six; 43 in the Haynesville, up three; and 23 in the Barnett, down one.

At this time last year, there were 477 rigs in the Permian Basin and 848 in Texas.

The U.S. shed 27 this week for a nationwide total of 1,893. There were 1,546 oil rigs, down 29; 346 natural gas rigs, up two; and one rig listed as miscellaneous, unchanged.

By trajectory, there were 330 vertical drilling rigs, down 24; 1,367 horizontal drilling rigs, down one; and 196 directional drilling rigs, down two.

The U.S. had 1,782 rigs a year ago this week.

The top five basins by rig count this week were the Permian; the Eagle Ford; the Williston with 188, down one; the Marcellus with 83, up one; and the Mississippian with 74, unchanged.

The top five states by rig count were Texas; Oklahoma with 211, unchanged; North Dakota with 179, up one; Louisiana with 113, down one; and New Mexico with 101, up one.

In the U.S., there were 1,820 rigs on land, down 28; 13 in inland waters, down one; and 60 offshore, up two. There were 58 rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, up two.
