Almost $60 billion evaporated from Russias stock market on Monday as global investors were spooked by Vladimir Putins invasion of Crimea and the West explores economic sanctions.
Russias MICEX index plummeted as much as 13% in response to the fast-moving Ukrainian situation, which has pitted Moscow against the West in a crisis reminiscent of the Cold War.
Financial pain was quickly felt by Russian investors as the ruble tumbled 2% against the U.S. dollar, forcing the countrys central bank to dramatically increase interest rates by 1.5 percentage points to 7%.
The selling wasnt restricted to Russia as the Dow Industrials dropped 120 points out of the gate on Monday and crude oil soared $2 a barrel to $104.59 as energy markets mull the implications of a wider conflict.
There are shockwaves upon shockwaves if this thing continues to spiral out of control. I would be a seller of Russian stocks down 13%, William Browder, an outspoken Putin critic and CEO of Hermitage Capital Management, told FOX Business. Ive seen the way Russian markets react to this stuff and 13% is not a lot.
The MICEX index was recently trading down 10.79% at 1288.81, leaving it off almost 15% on the year. The Russian benchmark shed about $58.4 billion in market cap since the end of trading on Friday, according to Reuters, which cited the indexs press service. That exceeds the $51 billion Russia shelled out to spend on the Sochi Winter Olympics last month.
Yandex (YNDX), Russias largest Internet search engine, tumbled almost 15% in recent U.S. trading.
Russias central bank surprised investors by raising interest rates sharply to 7% in response to the tumbling ruble. Analysts at Brown Brothers Harriman predicted more rate hikes will be needed to offset pressure on the currency.
Its not clear how the West will react to Russias move into Crimea, but the G-7 already abandoned plans to hold a G-8 summit in Sochi.
It is possible Russia will be hit by economic sanctions by the U.S. and Europe. Russia conducted $38 billion in two-way trade with Russia in 2013, according to the Census Bureau, while the EU had about $280 billion in two-way trade with Moscow as of 2012.

With the lifting of restrictions on Romanians and Bulgarians moving to the UK on Jan 1 and figures showing a net increase in migration to the UK of 212,000 in the year to September 2013, the problem of beds in sheds is likely to get much worse.

Officials in Harrow authorised an aircraft to fly over the borough to hunt for illegally occupied outbuildings. At a height of 3,400ft, the plane spent more than three hours filming the streets below from 9pm to just after midnight on Jan 8.
After studying the photographic evidence, officials concluded that the beds-in-sheds problem was far worse than they had suspected. Previously, Harrow had identified 75 suspected illegal dwellings in gardens as a result of tip-offs from irate neighbours. But the evidence from the spy plane indicated that there were 319 suspect constructions, which could mean a secret community of more than 1,000 people.
The telltale signs, picked up on a thermal-imaging camera, were the yellow blobs of heat escaping from uninsulated roofs, or the large outline of a building that should not have been where it was.
When Slough, in Berkshire, carried out a similar exercise in 2013, it found 210 outbuildings suspected of illegally housing migrants. Some reports have suggested that as many as 6,000 suspected sheds with beds exist in Slough alone. Ealing in west London has a problem on a similar scale.
The bed in the shed dwelling at Courtenay Avenue shows up as a large black rectangle on the aerial photograph. From the busy road that runs past the house, it is invisible.
The beds-in-sheds phenomenon means there is a hidden community springing up in the back gardens of our cities in our borough alone the thermal pictures we receive suggest there are four times as many as we first suspected, said Cllr Susan Hall, the Conservative leader of Harrow council.
The pressures of migration in London, fuelled by recent waves of new arrivals from eastern Europe, are creating new stresses on local authorities that we just havent had to contend with before.
