DETROIT Some call it a game-changer. Some just shake their heads. Either way, Fords new aluminum-clad F-150 is such a radical departure from past pickup trucks that it dominated talk at the opening of the Detroit auto show.

Ford Motor Co. unveiled the 2015 F-150, whose body is 97-percent aluminum, on Monday. The lighter material shaves as much as 700 pounds off the 5,000-pound truck, a revolutionary change for a vehicle known for its heft and for an industry still reliant on steel. No other vehicle on the market contains this much aluminum.

Its a landmark moment for the full-size pickup truck, said Jack Nerad, editorial director for Kelley Blue Book.

The change is Fords response to small-business owners desire for a more fuel-efficient and nimble truck and stricter government requirements on fuel economy. It sprang from a challenge by Fords CEO to move beyond the traditional design for a full-size pickup.

Youre either moving ahead and youre improving and youre making it more valuable and more useful to the customer or youre not, Chief Executive Alan Mulally said in a recent interview.

Ford wont say what the new trucks fuel economy will be, but two people familiar with the truck told Bloomberg News it will be close to 30 miles per gallon on the highway. Chryslers Ram is the current leader at 25 mpg on the highway. The top-rated pickup in the F-150 lineup for the 2014 model year has a 23 mpg highway rating.

It remains to be seen if customers will accept the change to aluminum.

Trucks are put to such hard use. They take bangs and dings and a lot of hard use, Mr. Nerad said. Well see how the use of lightweight aluminum plays out in the field.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - If you want to build a shed in Cape Coral, you might have an easier time after Monday's city council meeting. The city is considering letting people build sheds on the sides of homes, something, that's not previously allowed unless you ask for a special exception.

"Obviously there's a lack of storage space in Florida," laughed William Orsine.

He installed a shed in 2006, following proper permitting processes. But hearing that the city could allow people to sheds on the sides of homes has him worried it might cause clutter.

"I don think they should. Cape Coral is tight for a reason. It's a pretty residential neighborhood," he said.

It's required in the city that you place a shed in the back. But WINK News found out a majority of the homeowners who requested to build a shed on the side of the home, were allowed to build it after a lengthy process.

The request for sheds on the sides of houses is one of the most commonly requested variances in the city, which is why they're now reconsidering the rules.

"Provided (the shed on the side of the home) meets side setback requirements and provided that there's screening in place in the form of a wall, landscaping, or a combination of the two," explained Planning Team Coordinator Mike Struve, with the City of Cape Coral.

WINK News found mixed reactions on Facebook.

One resident tells us, "We wanted to build one, to many rules and regulations for nothing, we need a permit to breath in this town, so we gave it up."

Another says,"I think it is good you need a permit. Our neighbor has multiple things outside including sheds and other junk. No one does anything about it. He doesn't have any permits."

The buzz entering the Detroit auto show that began today was that Ford Motor Co. (F) would deliver one of the events most important introductions, an F-150 destined to be the first high-production vehicle with an aluminum body.

While Ford didnt disappoint, its official presentation was almost absent any mention of the word aluminum.

In prepared remarks as a series of new F-150s burst through paper walls onto the floor of Detroits Joe Louis Arena, Ford executives used tough to describe their newest pickup at least eight times. Raj Nair, the automakers product chief, underscored that the new vehicles frame is made of steel -- stronger, he said, than the steel the companys competitors use in their heavy-duty models. Only after that was the word aluminum uttered, and those in the stands heard it once.

Its a sensitive subject, said Kevin Tynan, an auto analyst for Bloomberg Industries. With any such change in direction, there will be doubts and incessant questions about whether it was the right move, the right time, and whether the execution is progressing according to plan.

The F-150 represents a big gamble for Ford. The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker is taking risks with its top-selling and most profitable model to shed as much as 700 pounds (318 kilograms) and close in on 30 miles (48 kilometers) per gallon in highway driving, people familiar with the trucks performance have said.
