Dow sheds more than 900 points as surging virus cases lead to shutdowns – BetaBoston - November 1, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Many people had come to believe we were at least stable, and now were having a second uptick, which throws potential GDP and everything else up in the air, said Randy Frederick, vice president of trading & derivatives at Charles Schwab. I did not expect this level of volatility or this degree of a sell-off.

The S&P 500 lost 119.65 points to 3,271.03. The Dow lost 943.24 points, or 3.4 percent, to 26,519.95. The Nasdaq composite slumped 426.48 points, or 3.7 percent, to 11,004.87. The selling was widespread, and 96 percent of stocks in the S&P 500 fell.

The selling in US markets followed broad declines in Europe, where the French president announced tough measures to slow the virus' spread and German officials agreed to impose a four-week partial lockdown. The measures may not be as stringent as the shutdown orders that swept the world early this year, but the worry is they could still hit the already weakened global economy.

Coronavirus counts are also climbing at a troubling rate in much of the United States, and the number of deaths and hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are on the rise. Even if the most restrictive lockdowns dont return, investors worry that the worsening pandemic could scare away customers of businesses regardless and sap away their profits.

Crude oil tumbled on worries that an economy already weakened by the virus would consume even less energy and allow excess supplies to build higher. Benchmark US crude dropped 5.7 percent to $37.39 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, fell 5.4 percent to $39.12 per barrel.

Instead, investors headed into the safety of US government bonds. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 0.77 percent from 0.79 percent late Tuesday. It was as high as 0.87 percent last week.

A measure of fear in the stock market touched its highest level since June, when the market suddenly tumbled amid concerns that a second wave of coronavirus infections had arrived. The VIX measures how much volatility investors expect from the S&P 500, and it climbed 20.8 percent Wednesday.

Even the continued parade of better-than-expected reports on corporate profits for the summer failed to shift the momentum.

Microsoft, the second-biggest company in the S&P 500, reported stronger profit and revenue for its latest quarter than expected. Thats typically good for a stock, but Microsoft nevertheless slumped 5 percent. It gave a forecast for the current quarter that was relatively in line with Wall Street forecasts, but analysts noted some caveats in it.

UPS fell 8.8 percent after also reporting better-than-expected earnings, though it said the outlook for its business is too cloudy due to the pandemic to offer any forecasts for its revenue or profits in the current quarter.

Companies broadly have not been getting as big a pop in their stock prices as they typically do after reporting healthier-than-expected profits. Analysts say that suggests good news on profits has already been built into stock prices and that the markets focus is elsewhere.

Investors' hopes that Congress and the White House could soon offer more big support for the economy as it struggles through the pandemic have largely faded. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin have continued their talks, but investors see little chance of a deal happening before Election Day next week.

Economists say the economy likely needs such aid after the expiration of the last round of supplemental unemployment benefits and other stimulus approved by Washington earlier this year.

Uncertainty about the upcoming presidential election has also been pushing markets around.

The market never likes uncertainty, said Stephanie Roth, portfolio macro analyst at J.P. Morgan Private Bank. People are just taking profits ahead of the election, to some extent.

The race seems be getting tighter than it was just a few weeks ago, said Jamie Cox, managing partner for Harris Financial Group. It has markets somewhat unnerved that the prospects of a contested election are back in the mix, he said.

Cox said he expects more calm in the markets in November after the election passes and some of the uncertainty over a new aid package fades.

Aid is coming regardless. Therell be no political motivation to hold it back after the election, he said. Theres plenty of desire to get money out to people so I think it will happen one way or another in November.

Police, prisons, and protests: recent poll sheds light on the opinions of student voters – rvahub.com - November 1, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Hunter Britt

Voters are more divided now than they were in the 2016 election, according to a recent poll by the Pew Research Center. Many young Virginians believe the passion could translate to the polls on Election Day.

Rickia Sykes, a senior at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, said that her political views have grown stronger since protests erupted globally in late May. The death of George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis Police Department officer kneeled on Floyds neck for nearly 8 minutes, inspired months of protests.

Sykes said that her political views line up with her faith. She considers herself pro-life, believes in advocating for the working class, and supports law-enforcement.

The protests have shown me we need to keep God first, but it has also shown me that good cops are important to help keep law and order, Sykes said in a text message. I do realize that there are bad cops, but in order to make a change, I believe we need to work together with the good cops.

Sykes said that now she researches politicians more thoroughly before deciding which candidate gets her vote. She looks at voting records to see if they vote in a way that will help us middle and lower-class families.

Erik Haugen, a junior at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond who considers himself a Libertarian, said his political views havent changed much since the protests started.

I just see the stronger push for equality, and I think its a good step in our nation so long as it proceeds peacefully, Haugen said.

Equality is at the center of issues that student voters are concerned about this election. From racial injustice to prison reform to healthcare concerns, many students say they want to enact positive change.

Students have varying opinions on whether or not the importance of voting has become more significant in recent years. Sykes said that she has always found voting significant, but she believes the importance of it has grown for others. Haugen said that while his political views havent changed, he believes voting has become more important in general and especially for the younger generations as tension in the U.S. grows and protests become more prominent.

Sarah Dowless, a junior at William & Mary in Williamsburg, said that voting has always been important, but the protests have made voting more prominent, like people encouraging folks to vote and making information about voting accessible, especially among young people. Dowless said the recent protests have reinforced her progressive beliefs.

If anything, the protests have only amplified my concern for racial injustice in America and my concern about police brutality, she said. Its a fundamental issue about freedom and it calls into question the very principles on which this country was founded and continues to claim.

The protests also influenced a host of legislation in the recent special legislative session of the General Assembly that ended last week. Virginia legislators passed numerous bills focused on police and criminal justice reform.

According to the United States Census Bureau, voter turnout among 18 to 29-year-olds jumped 15.7% between 2014 and 2018. This was the largest percentage point increase for any age group. Turnout is expected to be high this year as well, but there are no final numbers for age groups. Voter registration in Virginia set a record this year with almost 5.9 million voters registering. During the last presidential election a little more than 5.5 million people registered to vote.

Sykes is also concerned about the economy and health care. She wants a political leader who will increase the odds that people have a stable source of income to afford medical treatment.

As a graduating senior, I want and need a good paying/stable job for when I graduate, she said. I need someone who will make sure we have a strong and reliable economy.

Dowless wants U.S. prisons, which she describes as currently being more punitive than rehabilitative, to undergo major reform. Haugen would like police academy programs to be longer and implement de-escalation training.

I first and foremost care about the safety of the American people, Haugen said.

Early voting and no-excuse absentee voting are currently underway throughout the state. The deadline to request to vote absentee by mail is Oct. 23. Early voting ends the Saturday before Election Day, or Oct. 31.

Persistent Ramsgate thief who targeted cars and garden sheds is jailed – The Isle of Thanet News - November 1, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

    JAILED: Harry Holden

A Thanet burglar who targeted garden sheds and cars has been jailed.

Harry Holden was repeatedly seen in back gardens in Margate and Ramsgate and on one occasion stole a victims car keys.

The 34-year-old admitted a series of offences and was given a 12-month sentence at Folkestone Magistrates Court on Thursday, October 22.

Holden was seen by residents with a large knife in the garden of a woman on Ramsgate Road, Margate on Monday, August 31. He left the garden after being spotted but the resident found the lock had been broken off of her shed.

Holden was then seen in the garden of another homeowner nearby and again left the scene. This time he took a set of car keys from the property but did not steal the car.

Holden was arrested on October 12 after he was seen in gardens and looking into cars in Clements Road, Ramsgate.

He was stopped by police and found to be in possession of a torch, a multi-tool and an extendable magnet.

Officers bailed him while his activities were investigated, but he was arrested three days later after breaking into a car, again in Clements Road, Ramsgate.

Police attended and arrested Holden, who was found to be in possession of class A drugs.

Holden, of Clements Road, was charged with vehicle interference, possession of amphetamine, theft of the car keys, going equipped to steal and attempted burglary, charges he later admitted.

PC David Appleford, Kent Polices investigating officer, said: Holden is a persistent thief whose offending would have caused great distress to Thanet residents who saw him in their gardens.

I am pleased that the evidence gathered in this quick investigation left him with no choice but to plead guilty and that he is now in prison and will be unable to trouble local residents for some months.

New Study Sheds Light on the Virtues of E-Cars – Pipeline Technology Journal - November 1, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

In a new seminal study by Frontier Economics on the efficiency of battery-electric driven vehicles vis-a-vis current-based fuels it was determined that there is hardly any difference between the two: vehicles with combustion engines powered by climate-neutral fuels based on green electricity (e-fuels) have a similarly good overall energy balance as battery-powered vehicles. The study is based on an overall comparison of efficiency.

According to the study, the efficiency of the direct use of green electricity in battery electric cars, which has been shown to be around 70 percent in previous conventional analyses, shrinks to 13 to 16 percent in the holistic analysis by Frontier Economics. This puts it in a comparable range to vehicles powered by combustion engines and renewable fuels. Their overall efficiency is 10 to 13 percent, depending on the scenario.

The reason provided by Frontier Economics is the following: in conventional analyses the extreme differences in the yields of solar or wind plants depending on the location are completely ignored. In other words, a solar plant at an average location in Germany generates only about 40 percent of the amount of electricity per year that a comparable plant in North Africa produces. This higher electricity yield per plant can be used for road transport by importing hydrogen or synthetic fuels to Germany. For battery electric vehicles, on the other hand, one is largely dependent on domestic renewable electricity generation.

Further, electric cars must be able to be charged even when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing. In a 100 percent renewable electricity system, a certain proportion of the electricity for battery electric vehicles will therefore also have to be made available via the detour of intermediate storage via hydrogen, which is then converted back into electricity in gas power plants. Alsoit is often not taken into account that vehicles require additional energy for cooling and especially for heating the interior.

Dr. Jens Perner, head of the study, sums up: "The study shows that, when all relevant efficiency criteria are considered as a whole, there is hardly any difference in efficiency between vehicles with battery electric drive and those powered by climate-friendly, electricity-based fuels. The reason for this is in particular the importability of electricity-based fuels. This makes it possible to use high-yield locations for the production of wind and solar power worldwide. The efficiency advantage of battery electric cars, as cited in conventional studies, is largely offset by this import capability of fuels".

Ahead of the Election, New Tools Help NYU Researchers Shed Light on the Internet’s Dark Power – NYU News - November 1, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Between January 2018 and October 2020, Q says was mentioned 3,829 times by 52 YouTube channels identified as belonging to alt-right or radical communities. Research into YouTube has always been difficult, but a new tool developed by Erik Van Zummeren, a student in NYU Tischs Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), launching Friday, October 30, is allowing journalists and researchers to gain new insights into a previously hidden piece of the internet.

This new tool, called Raditube, works by indexing the automated subtitles of videos from approximately 350 prominent alt-right and far left channels and employs behind-the-scenes infrastructureincluding YouTubes public APIto make the data accessible and searchable. The subtitle text is retrieved via a search engine, allowing users to see how a particular search term is being discussed within the tracked channels, and to access datasets and data visualizations to inform their research. This research has been limited to text-based platforms like Facebook and Twitter in the past, as its difficult to parse information from thousands of hours of video content and YouTubes personal recommendation engine obscures how the platform works. But with this new tool, it would be possible for a researcher to find videos mentioning QAnon-related conspiracy theories, compare their context, and understand how these concepts evolve over timefor example.

Even though a lot of radicalization takes place on YouTube, it remains a place that is rather difficult to research due to its audiovisual character. Yet, we know that a lot of public debate is taking place on YouTube. Many right-wing figures have gained prominence outside of mainstream media, purely on YouTube, yet that content is moderated by just one company. Its crucial to facilitate access to that information so we can gain a better understanding of how debate is being shaped through the platform and how algorithms help misinformation spread through various communities, said Van Zummeren.

Right now, the tracked channels are curated by Van Zummeren alone, which can become challenging when channels are removed for inflammatory contentbefore popping up in new formson a daily basis. He is working to create partnerships in the future to allow researchers to curate their own tracked channels and adapt the platform for their individual needs.

Svindal interview sheds light on the Attacking Viking’s ‘secret sauce’ – SkiRacing.com - November 1, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Culture is hard to put a finger on, at least to crystallize what it is and how it can be replicated. The cultural differences between all ski nations is a particularly interesting and complex mix of variables and intangibles, such as coaching styles, philosophies, work ethic and sport development centralization, to mention a few.

When former Canadian World Cup slalom racer Mike Janyk interviewed Aksel Lund Svindal on a FaceBook live session Sunday as part of BC Alpines summit speaker series, he covered a lot of ground with the thoughtful and ever-smiling Norwegian great, who should be in the conversation as the mens alpine GOAT.

The mentorship piece is one that stands out as a key ingredient in the Attacking Vikings secret sauce which they have relentlessly deployed over the past few decades winning titles and medals at a rapid and relentless rate. When one champion fades, another enters. Over and over again. Lucas Braathen, the latest Norweigan-weve-never-heard-of-until-he-wins took the Solden opener as a 19-year-old. Side note: three Norwegians were in the top 8 in that race.

Svindal was one of the most likeable athletes on the tour, with an attitude that every ski racer and parent should study and dissect to fully understand what it looks like to be a genuine champion. During his prolific career, which garnered two overall World Cup titles and 36 wins, he showed respect to his predecessors, challenged the present and nurtured the future. Then passed the torch to the next leader in waiting.

When Svindal first joined the Norwegian team in 2001 as a 19-year-old, he joined Lasse Kjus and Kjetil Andr Aamodt, ski racing legends in the tail end of their historic careers whose combined record of 160 major World Cup, World Championship and Olympic medals is firmly entrenched in the record books.

I had posters of these guys on the wall still and Im sitting around the dinner table the first night in Saas Fee, he reminisced. They were still my heroes and now theyre my friends? It was one of the coolest moments of my career. My first year on the World Cup team was probably the highlight of everything I was able to be a part of.

The Norges take their approach to team building and mentorship seriously.

Svindal took what he learned from Kjus and Aamodt and simply passed on their legacy. It was something I thought was the most valuable; that I could pass on to the young guys on our team when I was the captain. If they sit down at the first meal I want them to know they made the cut and are part of the team because they earned it.

Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who grew up idolizing Svindal, burst onto World Cup in 2016 to win the overall super G title that year. When Kilde first qualified for the Norwegian national team as a junior, Svindal took the talented teenager under his wing, showing him the ropes and helping with his transition to World Cup racing.

Kilde won the overall World Cup title in 2020.

When Svindal first entered the ultimate fear-overcoming environment of the Hahnenkahm downhill start area before his first training run at the legendary Kitzbuhel race, he walked over to Swiss star Didier Cuche, who at the time had already won the race four times, and was promptly told to go away, as Cuche needed to collect his own thoughts and manage his fears.

That was the atmosphere of the guys who are going to fight for the win, they know its going to be a risk and when faced with the choice theyre going to take it. Then there are those guys joking around and throwing snowballs, they also know its a risk but theyre going to back out when it gets tough and they will take the safe line.

By the middle of the 2010s, Svindal had been dominating the speed circuit for years before a horrific crash at the 2016 Hahnenkamm downhill sidelined him with a shredded knee. The recovery from that injury was slow and required a second surgery midway through the following season. Eventually, Svindal did bounce back from his injury and won three World Cups the next season, including the Kitzbuehel super G.

Anyone whod followed Svindals career knew that he would have no interest in fading into some oblivious retirement. Already with one foot in the entrepreneurial business space during his latter part of his ski racing career, he recently helped launch an IPO with a tech company, in addition to real estate investments, launching a fashion brand and a book and movie on the horizon.

Ive always been interested in other stuff its tough to leave your teammates but you find awesome energy in other places, he said. People are super competitive in other spaces so its kind of similar to being an athlete. Ive been a part of some awesome groups. One startup I joined as an investor four-and-a-half years ago just launched an IPO on Friday, so to see them grow from 8 guys to a hundred plus employees was really cool.

And they have that same culture as you have with a small group of guys.

    Theres that word again, culture.

    Watch out business world.

Imaging Method Sheds New Light on Molecules that Help Shield HIV – Medical Device and Diagnostics Industry - November 1, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Researchers from Scripps Research and Los Alamos National Laboratory have devised a method for mapping the thickets of slippery sugar molecules that help shield HIV from the immune system.

Mapping these shields will give researchers a more complete understanding of why antibodies react to some spots on the virus but not others and may shape the design of new vaccines that target the most vulnerable and accessible sites on HIV and other viruses.

The sugar molecules, or "glycans," are loose and stringy, and function as shields because they are difficult for antibodies to grip and block access to the protein surface. The shields form on the outermost spike proteins of HIV and many other viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, because these viruses have evolved sites on their spike proteins where glycan molecules -- normally abundant in cells -- will automatically attach.

"We now have a way to capture the full structures of these constantly fluctuating glycan shields, which to a great extent determine where antibodies can and can't bind to a virus such as HIV," says the study's lead author Zachary Berndsen, PhD, a postdoctoral research associate in the structural biology lab of Scripps Research Professor Andrew Ward, PhD.

The same wavy flexibility that makes these sugary molecules resistant to antibodies has made them impossible for researchers to capture with traditional atomic-scale imaging. In the new study, which appears in theProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the scientists developed techniques that, for the first time, allow these elusive molecules to be mapped in great detail on the surface of the HIV spike protein, known as "Env."

The Scripps Research team collaborated with the lab of Gnana Gnanakaran, PhD, staff scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, which is equipped with high-performance computing resources that enabled fresh approaches for modeling the glycans.

The researchers combined an atomic-scale imaging method called cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) with sophisticated computer modeling and a molecule-identifying technique called site-specific mass spectrometry. Cryo-EM relies on averaging tens or hundreds of thousands of individual snapshots to create a clear image, thus highly flexible molecules like glycans will appear only as a blur if they show up at all.
