CONNEAUT Three full-sized, outdoor storage sheds built by inmates at Lake Erie Correctional Institution were donated to the Ashtabula County Habitat for Humanity during a presentation Tuesday morning.
Along with the sheds, the prison provided Habitat with three new washers and dryers, officials said.
The sheds were assembled by inmates in the rehabilitative building maintenance program. Along with the appliances, the sheds will benefit families in Ashtabula, Conneaut and Orwell, officials said.
Projects like this can aid in the rehabilitative process, State Rep. John Patterson, D-Jefferson, who attended the presentation and spoke to inmates, said in a statement. Its my hope these inmates will remember the lesson of giving to others and have their lives transformed so they can become productive members of society. If this helps jump start their lives, and they have an epiphany, a transformational moment, thats what were here for and thats what we want to do.
Prison administrators said they were happy to assist.
We know these structures and these washers and dryers will be put to good use by some very deserving families, LaECI Warden Brigham Sloan said in a statement. We thank Rep. Patterson for bringing us together with Habitat for Humanity and we intend to maintain a long-lasting and strong relationship with this great, community-focused organization.
Jeffrey Scribben, Habitat board president and director of Community Actions housing services division, was grateful for the gifts.
This is definitely going to benefit the community, he said in a statement. Owning a washer and dryer is an expense that most people we deal with cant even think about affording.
The appliances, still in their boxes, became expendable when the prison opted to contract for its laundry service, officials said.
Staff and inmates plan to build two more sheds for Habitat and also assist in the organizations next home project in Ashtabula County.

Slough Borough Council spends 24,000 building up 3D map from air Authority uncovered 6,350 suspicious sheds and garages emitting heat Thousands could be living in converted outbuildings without permission Plane criss-crossed streets, picking up heat signals from outbuildings Analysis of images from night flight revealed suspicious dwellings

A spy plane equipped with a thermal imaging camera has found that more than 6,000 outbuildings in one town could be 'beds in sheds' converted by rogue landlords.
Slough Borough Council is the first local authority in the country to pay for the specially-adapted aircraft to fly over streets picking up heat from sheds and garages.
It spent 24,000 on flights to build up a precise 3D map of every building in the Berkshire town. The results mean thousands could be living there without planning permission or contributing council tax.
Welcome to Slough: This thermogram image shows data recovered after flying over the town, with the red representing high levels of heat escaping. The council said the imaging helps them identify outhouses because the cameras can pick up areas of high heat loss - although few can be seen outside the houses in this snippet

Thousands of beds in sheds rented out by rogue landlords have been found in Slough
The unsafe and primitive outbuildings were pinpointed when a spy plane equipped with thermal imaging to detect possible human life flew over Slough, Berkshire.
Now council workers are visiting each site, accompanied by immigration and tax officials, police and fire officers.
The dodgy buildings face being demolished and the landlords fined if they are being used for accommodation or illegally built.
Beds in sheds is a growing problem across the UK. Unscrupulous property owners either build outhouses in their gardens or convert garages and sheds and rent them out to mainly illegal immigrants at extortionate rates.
Slough was one of the nine worst affected councils handed nearly 2 million by the Government to tackle the issue. It became the first to use the specialist spy plane.
In March, the aircraft made a two-hour night flight over the borough picking up heat signals from outbuildings to see if they are being used as beds in sheds.
The illegal housing was found by spy planes using thermal imaging
All the data has been analysed and a list of 6,350 suspicious dwellings drawn up that have to be investigated.
The buildings, which are rented out for up to 900 a month, could be housing upwards of 18,000 people.
