Installation Tips | WoodHaven Log & Lumber - February 18, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Installation Instructions for WoodHaven Log Siding

    Watch our installation videos

    Tools Required:

Compound Miter Saw Table Saw Wood Shims Large Flathead Screwdriver

    To Start Your Project:

Set all of your Outside Vertical Corners (OVC). This can be done by screwing the corners directly through the OVC to connect to the house or if you prefer not to have any screws visible, use perforated steel strapping. Screw strapping to a 90 slot on the back of the OVC. Let the strapping stick out from the OVC six to twelve inches. Connect the other end to the house, making sure you hit studs in the corner of the house.

Now its time to set the D trim around all the windows and doors. If the D trim doesnt set level against the windows and wall, use shim stock to get it as close to a 90 angle, so that the log siding will butt tighter to the D trim. This is not always possible so you might have to miter the log siding to achieve a tighter fit.

Once you have completed all the D trim and OVC, you are ready to start your log siding. When starting your log siding, always start at the corner that is most visible to your driveway and road accesses. This way, if there is a discrepancy in your house from corner to corner you can still keep your lines straight from side to side. You will always want to work in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. Always end your project at a corner that is most non-visible to public or traffic. Take a four to six foot level and level the first piece of log siding to the sill plate, run screws through the top of the tongue at a 45 angle and the bottom screws the same through the groove to connect in the sill plate.

Now that the bottom row is level and secured to the wall, begin stacking and screwing the next piece on the wall, stair-stepping as you move up the wall. While screwing through the tongue, if it happens to splinter, do not be concerned. Just remove the splinter and continue. There is no reason to pre-drill holes for screws. The angle at which the screw is driven at allows the screw to go through the back of the log siding. Always look down the wall you are working on. Look for bulges and depressions in the wall. Where these occur, simply tighten or loosen the screws as needed, or shim. If there is a crown to the wood, simply use a large flathead screwdriver to pull the area down to the stack of the previous piece of log siding.

Remember, there is no wood product that is going to be at the tolerance of a manufactured aluminum or vinyl siding, but the appearance is no comparison to WoodHavens natural wood products.

These are some simple hints and pointers to make your WoodHaven project easier for you and to give it the appearance and integrity of a professional WoodHaven installation. If at any time in your project you run into any issues, please feel free to call your WoodHaven dealer so we can help you through your project.

Thank you for choosing WoodHaven products for your home improvement needs.

Siding | Installation | Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau - February 18, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

What is the appropriate fastener length to use for installing cedar shingle siding over insulation?

Assuming local Building Official approval for this type of installation is obtained, you should use the length of nail recommended for that specific material. Add the thickness of the existing insulation and this gives you the nail length required for the fastener to penetrate " or more into the sheathing. Refer to the CSSB's Exterior and Interior Wall Manual.

As long as the shingles are dry when stained it doesn't seem to matter whether they are painted on all 4 sides or just on the front side. A local, professional painting expert may be able to provide you with further guidance.

Yes, but most times you need to install additional window and door trim to ensure that the product lies flush with windows and doors. Sometimes this additional trim requirement makes it less expensive to tear off the old siding and start from scratch. Look at the diagram in the CSSB's Exterior and Interior Wall Manual for more details.

Put the bottom step flashing on the starter course, then bend the bottom of the step flashing out about 1" to 1 " away from the wall. The top of the step flashing is still under the siding or plaster. You do have to trim the top starter course shingle with a triangle shaped cut to allow this. This does leave a triangular shaped void between the bottom of the step flashing, the wall, and the shingle, that can be filled with caulk. This will divert the water away from the lower wall so the water does not run down the wall.

You can install grooved shingles this way, but it is a rather expensive installation. You have paid more for the grooves put on the face of the shingle, and they are manufactured with the intent of having the grooves facing out, to the weather.

With the wide variety of modern and historic homes in the greater Chicago area, one can simply take a short driving tour to see good examples of the many different types of siding and exterior materials available. Whether you need vinyl siding installation or replacement, brick or masonry work, or need a siding repair near a roof peak, Thunderbolt Construction will be happy to meet with you to discuss your home improvement project.

Its easy to see why vinyl siding is such a popular building material in Chicago today when you consider its low cost and low maintenance qualities. In addition, it comes in a wide selection of colors to choose from, and is easy to replace.

Many owners of older Chicago homes are choosing to replace their aluminum siding with vinyl siding. Although once the standard in siding materials, the use of aluminum has greatly declined due to its propensity to bend and dent.

Wood siding is attractive, but requires more maintenance than vinyl siding. If you dread the work and cost of constant painting and upkeep, let us complete a siding installation that requires lower maintenance so you can enjoy a stress-free spring.

One of the most durable siding products on the market today is fiber cement. We use products from James Hardie, the world leader in fiber cement siding. Hardie siding is more weather resistant than many other siding options.

Great as an accent in one area on older or historic homes. Types include half round, straight or staggered shake designs, among others. Decorative shingle siding provides your home with a beautiful style youll love.

For the look of real stone without the cost, stone veneer can be used on the Chicago homes entire exterior, as an accent or even on posts and fireplaces. Installing stone veneer on the outside of your home will increase its curb appeal.

There is nothing like the rich, warm color of cedar siding, although it does require occasional refinishing. Call us today at (877) 204-7600 for more information on cedar siding installation, replacement or any other exterior home covering.

Brick and stone simply has a look of its own. For a solid, durable exterior with lots of curb appeal, brick is the product of choice. Contact us for any brick or masonry project, including chimneys, fireplaces and more.

More than siding installation, Thunderbolt Construction serves northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin with contractor services. We also offer door installation services, soffit installation services or replacement windows. Were also your number one source to find a professional gutter installation contractor or skylight installation contractor in the Chicago area. Installing Vinyl Siding – How to Install Siding. DIY Advice - February 16, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Intro

Vinyl siding cuts easily, goes up quickly, produces uniform reveals almost automatically, and needs minimal caulking and no painting. But don't take the job lightly: The walls must be well-prepared and the pieces installed correctly to prevent leaks and siding failure.

With vinyl siding, some moisture will seep behind the siding and must be allowed to escape at the bottom around weep holes, much like those in a brick wall. Seepage won't be a problem if you correctly install building wrap and flashings or if the underlying siding is in sound condition.

The higher the vinyl gauge -- that is, the thicker it is -- the better it will perform: 0.048-inch-thick vinyl is significantly stronger than 0.040-inch-thick vinyl. Vinyl siding does not need to be painted.

The basic rule is "hang loose." Because vinyl expands and contracts with changes in the weather, nails should not be driven fully tight, and pieces should be cut so there are 1/4-inch gaps between panels and trims.

Installing Bevel Cedar Siding – Real Cedar - February 11, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Stealth Cabin by superkl; photo by Shai Gil Fotography

Spacing for the siding should be laid out beforehand. The number of board spaces between the soffit and bottom of the lowest piece of siding at the foundation should be such that the overlap is as per the table.

Start with the bottom course using a furring strip to support the lower edge. Each succeeding course overlaps the upper edge of the previous one by a minimum of 1 inch. Rabbeted patterns are self-spacing, but leave 1/8 inch expansion clearance. Where possible, the bottom of the board that is placed across the top of the windows should coincide with the window cap.

Bevel siding should be face nailed to studs with 1-1/4 inch penetration into solid wood using one nail per piece spaced at a maximum of 24 inches on center. Place nail just above the overlap. Take care not to nail through the overlap of two pieces.

Do not reduce the siding overlap recommendations given in the installation sections of this publication. Doing so could result in damage from wind-driven water. Use the larger overlaps for unseasoned sidings to allow for shrinkage and expansion. Take care not to overdrive fasteners when using larger overlaps. Butt joints between boards should be staggered and meet on studs. Fit siding snugly to other pieces and to trim.

*These overlap recommendations must be followed for proper installation.
