How many of the vast sea of poppies at the Tower represented the contribution of the South African forces who died in … - November 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The ceramic poppies commemorating the dead of the First World War are being removed from the Tower of London. Each of the 888,246 flowers represented a member of the British or Colonial armed forces killed during the conflict.

With British focus so firmly on the trench warfare for which the war is so rightly remembered, the other conflicts that made this a genuinely world war have received little, if any, attention. How many British school children have been instructed on how the Japanese fought alongside the Royal Navy, or captured German islands in the Pacific?

The war in Africa has also been all but ignored. Just how many of the vast sea of poppies at the Tower represented the contribution of the South African forces who died in the campaign to take the German colony of what is today Namibia? Yet the fighting in what was then German South-West Africa had major repercussions for the entire region.

In August 1914, just days after Britain declared war on Germany, the South African prime minister, Louis Botha, sent a telegram to London offering to assist the war effort. On the face of it this was an extraordinary decision. Botha had only signed his own peace treaty with Britain 12 years earlier, at the end of the Anglo-Boer war the most costly conflict Britain had fought since the fight against Napoleon. Yet here this Boer war general was offering troops to his former imperial enemies.

By the end of August the first shots had been fired along the Orange River, the boundary between South Africa and Namibia. The conflict should have been a push-over. Germany had only 5,308 Schutztruppe or protection forces in the colony. South Africas newly formed Union Defence Force mobilised a force more than ten times this size with over 67,000 men.

But the fighting the vast, desert terrain was intense.

The South Africans managed to lose the first confrontation. At the oasis of Sandfontein they ran into well-organised German forces who managed to force the ignominious surrender of the South African officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Reginald Grant.

Although no more than a setback, the battle for Sandfontein, just north of the Orange River, had major repercussions. Many Afrikaners were already deeply unhappy about supporting the British when the Germans had assisted then during the Boer war. Now they saw their opportunity.

Manie Maritz, in charge of troops in the Northern Cape, was ordered to mobilise his forces. But instead he contacted the Germans across the border and won their support for transforming South Africa into an independent Boer republic.

Other Afrikaner Generals joined the revolt. General Christiaan Beyers the Commandant-General of the Union Defence Force was among the rebels. It is sad that the war is being waged against the barbarism of the Germans, Beyers wrote in September 1914. We have forgiven but not forgotten all the barbarities committed in our own country during the South African War. His reference to the deaths of 26,000 Afrikaner women and children in the British concentration camps during the Boer war resonated with many of his people.

Despite critics, Rudys plan passes muster - November 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Posted: Wednesday, November 26, 2014 5:23 pm | Updated: 5:37 pm, Wed Nov 26, 2014.

CAPE ELIZABETH - A new, modern version of the Rudys of the Cape restaurant got mostly positive support from residents and the Cape Elizabeth Planning Board during a hearing on an updated site plan for the property Nov. 18.

But some residents, and one Planning Board member, continue to criticize the proposal. They say the new Rudys design is not compatible with other nearby buildings on Ocean House Road, better known as Route 77.

In a 5-1-1 vote, with Chairwoman Victoria Volent abstaining, the Planning Board approved several modifications to a previously approved site plan and resource protection permit for Rudys, including upgrades to lighting and curbing, the installation of raised planters, a generator, an entrance sign and more.

Because this was an amendment to a standing approval, they should be able to continue full throttle or at a speed the owner dictates on the project, while the plans are updated, Town Planner Maureen OMeara said after the meeting.

Part of the proposal, which is to use weathered steel siding on the lower portion of the building, has triggered mixed reviews from residents.

We have heard very different points of view from the public, said Planning Board member Elaine Falendar. Weve had as many emails in opposition as weve had speakers in support (of the project.)

While some residents say they love the one-and-a-half story, contemporary, cottage-style building that replaces the former Rudys diner and convenience store, others would prefer a design they say would blend in with Cape Elizabeths existing architecture.

I think if you look at it at the right angle, it looks like Darth Vaders helmet, resident Todd Colpitts said of the building. I do not think its compatible with the structures in the neighborhood.

Henry Steinberg, the only member who voted against the modified site plan, said Cape Elizabeth is a calm and relaxed community that projects an aura of tranquility.

Each year thousands of individuals volunteer their time to support Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanitys efforts to build decent, affordable housing for needy families. These volunteers are the lifeline of Habitats program. To support Habitats mission, on Friday, November 14, Peapack-Gladstone Bank employees participated in a new build project in Lambertville, New Jersey. Renovations progressing at Ybor's Al Lopez house baseball museum - November 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

YBOR CITY Construction on the Tampa Baseball Museum at the Al Lopez House has reached a major milestone. Recently, the house received a fresh coat of paint, which adds a touch of color and protects its wooden exterior. In addition, bricks will soon be added along the front ramp.

Before painting, custom siding designed to match the original siding was installed, along with new windows. Framing was added in anticipation of a new front entry, including a custom door, glass transom and other details, which will replicate the style of homes built in Ybor City in the early 1900s. The door, sidewalk pavers and landscaping are funded by the Davis Islands Garden Club.

Interior construction also is underway to allow for the installation of exhibits in the house at 2003 N. 19th St. The museum originally was to open in the spring but was delayed because of renovation issues. The opening date has not been announced.
