Teen triggers fire alarm and flooding at Palace Station - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- It was a rude awakening for people on the seventh floor of the hotel at Palace Station casino-hotel.

The fire alarm and sprinkler system went off around midnight on Wednesday, forcing several guests to be evacuated from their rooms.

But there was never a fire.

It turns out, a teenage girl was trying to steam a dress. The girl told Action News she hung the dress from an overhead sprinkler fixture in her seventh floor hotel room.

When she was steaming it while it was hanging, the hot steam triggered the sprinkler to go off. Cell phone video shows how water started shooting out and drenching the hotel room.

The water soaked the hallways and other rooms on the same floor, so several guests had to be moved to other rooms in the hotel.

The teenager is visiting from South Carolina and is in Las Vegas this week for the Cinderella International Scholarship Pageant for girls and young women.

No one was hurt in this incident, but there will be a lot of cleanup to do at the hotel.

USU water auditor makes every drop count by counting every drop - July 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By KEVIN SCANNELL Sun Advocate reporter

As the blue catch cups sit on the green and yellowed spotted yard of an apartment complex in Price, James Utley is carefully watching over things in the background.

As the sprinkler system turns off, Utley, a USU Logan student originally from Price, begins the walk along the yard, carefully checking each catch cup noting the water measurements along the way.

On a clipboard he carries on the walk, he marks down measurements noting the differences between the water's reach on the yard in each zone.

It sounds like a lot of work, but its benefits of improving and creating more efficient water systems for yards is the hope for the USU Extension Office as well as Price City.

"By doing a water audit we can help a homeowner to efficiently water their lawns while learning tips to conserve water and building better root structures in the ground for healthier lawns," said Utley, a Biology major. Since late May, Utley has been performing water audits on the yards of homeowners in the area as well as places including Washington Park for Price City and areas owned by Carbon County.

The work is made possible with the help of a grant and Price City helps chip in a small stipend for gas throughout the summer for Utley to travel around the area performing free water audits.

By having a water audit performed on a yard, Utley said it can help with showing how well a sprinkler system works in covering a yard during a water cycle.

"Some people may be guessing of how much to water their yards and for how long to do it," said Utley. "They might be shooting in the dark."

While at the apartment complex along Eastridge Road in Price on Monday morning, Utley noted some of the positives and faults of the system. An automated sprinkler based system can help with watering on a regular schedule in the early morning hours. But while it may be automated, Utley said homeowners need to regularly check and maintain their systems every few weeks to insure that the systems are adequately covering the entire lawn during a cycle.

Garden to-do list, July 18-24: Maintain lawns, eat squash blossoms - July 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It's been a summer of unsettled weather, with twists and turns worthy of a roller coaster. Keep managing, mowing and making the most of it.

    LAWNS

Brown spots are everywhere probably in your yard, too. Don't just increase watering times. Check your sprinkler system's heads. Call in a sprinkler professional for repairs if you're not ready to DIY.

Lack of water or poor reach often means a head that's clogged so it's not spraying correctly. A quick cleaning will fix it. Diminished spray may mean shifting soils may have sunk the sprinkler head, or grass may be too tall. Often, heads get pointed the wrong way or need adjusting up or down so water will spray in the right direction. Bottom line: a 10-minute sprinkler check and fix will save time and dollars in replacing dead sod. More: http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/crops/04722.html

Hand water the dry spots for relief until the fixed heads can catch up. Hose draggers with dry spots should make sure that all areas are watered.

Other conditions can cause straw-colored spots, so be sure to identify the problem with help from your local extension office or turf expert.

One common challenge in hot, dry summer months preceded by wet, cool conditions is ascochyta (as-co-kite-a) leaf blight. This fungus gets into the leaf blade after mowing (mowing companies do not carry the fungus from yard to yard). The fungus is on the leaf already, but under the right conditions, it flares up to cause bruising of the leaf blade all the way to the ground, resulting in brown spots. Researchers aren't sure why or how this happens. Don't waste money on control products for aschochyta; they won't work.

Kentucky bluegrass is the most affected by ascochyta, but it can occur on tall fescue and perennial ryegrass. You'll see large, uniform areas of brown, or what seems like dead grass. It's not dead. The roots and crowns are alive. Over time, and with good lawn care, the lawn will recover.

So ... mow as usual with sharp blades to a height of 2 to 3 inches and water a day or two after mowing. Mow in the cool morning or evening; leave the clippings to return nutrients to the soil.

Soak-and-cycle watering is very efficient, giving water time to travel down to the roots. Just add multiple start times to the irrigation controller, but reduce each zone's watering time. Allow up to an hour in between start times so the lawn is watered, then soaks down, then is watered again. More on ascochyta: http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/garden/02901.html

Thomasville firefighters respond to fire alarm at business - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Friday, July 18, 2014 at 7:09 a.m. Last Modified: Friday, July 18, 2014 at 11:56 a.m.

A sprinkler system saved a manufacturing plant on High Tech Boulevard in Thomasville from sustaining major damage Friday, said Robbie Binkley, battalion chief for the Thomasville Fire Department.

Firefighters with the Thomasville Fire Department responded to Advanced Motorsports Coatings at 17 High Tech Boulevard at 5:06 a.m. Josh Myers, shift supervisor with Davidson County 911, said firefighters initially were dispatched to a fire alarm at the business.

No flames were visible upon arrival of firefighters. Binkley said firefighters didn't see smoke until they opened the door to the building.

Rocky Watts, division chief of code enforcement/fire marshal for the TFD, said the plant housed 100 gallons of sulfuric acid mixed with water in a chemical open system. He explained the fire was around the system. Watts said it appears the fire was a result of a shortage in the electrical wiring in the heating element of a chemical holding tank.

Binkley and Watts each noted they don't believe there was anything suspicious with the fire.

There was no structural damage and minimal smoke damage, the battalion chief reported. A fire destroyed the same business 10 years ago, at which time it did not have a sprinkler system, he said.

The sprinkler system kept the fire in check and saved the building, Binkley said. Watts said the company cleans racing parts and places a coating on them.

Davidson County Emergency Management and the Davidson County Fire Marshals Office assisted Thomasville firefighters. No injuries were reported.
