Ahmedabad, April 2:
Astral Poly Technik Ltd is planning to venture into bendable multilayered chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) piping system for gas distribution industry or city gas distribution (CGD) sector in India.
The BSE-listed Astral is in the process to obtain certificate from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for its FlowGuard Bendable Multilayer pipes, which would be used in the gas distribution.
We are in the process to get the BIS certificate for the Bendable multilayered pipe. The technology for installation and maintenance is different from the present metal pipes used in the gas distribution. It may take around 3-4 years to be able to pass through the stringent norms of BIS, said Sandeep Engineer, Managing Director, Astral Poly Technik.
The company has manufactured FlowGuard Bendable Multilayer pipe for global buyers for hot and cold water distribution system.
Astral has already received the BIS certification for its CPVC BlazeMaster Fire Sprinkler system. The company will invest around Rs 25-30 crore on the system.
"We are the first company to provide BIS certified CPVC fire sprinkler systems. The pipes will be manufactured at the companys existing CPVC manufacturing facilities, we would still require to increasing our capacity, Engineer said.
The Indian pipes market is predominantly controlled by metallic pipes for fire sprinkler system. The CPVC fire sprinkler system would overcome the challenges of corrosion, scaling and rusting in metal pipes.
Company will market its fire sprinkler systems under the brand name of BlazeMaster CPVC pipe and fittings.
For the fiscal 2013, the company has registered a total turnover of Rs 821 crore with a net profit of Rs 59.5 crore.

IoT Sprinkler Taps the Cloud -

SAN JOSE, Calif. Steve Fernholz looked out the window of his Seattle home and got an idea for an Internet of Things startup.
"I was watching the way my mom was watering the trees on my behalf, and I thought, 'That's the way to do it. Just give each plant what it needs,'" he told us. "A couple days later, I had a prototype with parts from a model flying airplane, and now, nine months later, I have a startup."
Thus was born Droplet, a next-generation automated sprinkler that taps into weather and soil data over the web to deliver carefully calibrated amounts of water to each plant in a yard. Fernholz said it can slash water bills as much as 90% -- about $253 a year for the average user.
The device, now available on Amazon.com for $299.99, includes a sprinkler head, a timer, and a Raspberry Pi controller board. It uses a Realtek 802.11b/g/n controller to link to the Internet over a home WiFi net like another access point.
"We looked at different IoT protocols, such as low-power Bluetooth and Zigbee, but for the range and ease of use, we chose WiFi," said Fernholz, a former Microsoft employee who worked on Bing, Office, and Windows.
The $299.99 Droplet device has a range of about 30 feet.
Users can manage the devices via a browser, or they can use iOS and Android apps that will be available when Droplet starts shipping in June. "Our connected services suite is where the device really shines." For example, it can delay watering until it finds out how much of a predicted downpour actually falls.
The five-person company is hiring another four or five developers and has closed a small seed round with investors. The next major goal is to develop a version for farmers, probably sometime next year. "It's a personal goal of mine to effect social change by empowering better farm yields and better water use."
Rick Merritt, Silicon Valley Bureau Chief, EE Times

IoT Sprinkler Taps the Cloud

A lthough a sprinkler system may not have stopped the fire that ravaged James Monroe Elementary School, it certainly might have helped, according to Edison Fire Chief Brian Latham.
He said fire sprinklers could have controlled the fire, but in many circumstances, fire sprinklers have failed to contain fires.
It is definitely better to have them than not, he said.
James Monroe Elementary School, which was built in 1963, did not have a sprinkler system in place nor was it required to.
The fire at the school on Sharp Road began around 8 p.m. March 22, and firefighters fought the blaze through the night.
A facilities management supervisor at the elementary school Jerome C. Higgins, 48, of East Brunswick was charged on March 24 with a disorderly persons offense for allegedly smoking inside the school and then tossing the lit cigarette into a trash bin, igniting the blaze that ultimately consumed the school.
Board of Education President Gene Maeroff said the question of sprinklers will be examined.
No schools were required to install sprinklers until 1977, he said, adding that the Edison School District has not built a new school since 1972.

SEATTLE People living in the path of a deadly Washington state landslide had virtually no warning before a wall of mud, trees and other debris thundered down the mountain. Some of the homeowners didn't even know the hillside could give way at any time.
Unlike the warning systems and elaborate maps that help residents and officials prepare for natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes, there's no national system to monitor slide activity and no effort underway to produce detailed nationwide landslide hazard maps.
The U.S. Geological Survey doesn't track or inventory slide areas on a national scale, despite an ambitious plan to do so more than a decade ago when Congress directed it to come up with a national strategy to reduce landslide losses.
That's left states and communities to put together a patchwork of maps showing landslide hazards. In some cases, they are discovering that more buildings than previously thought are sitting on unstable ground. Even then, that information may not make its way to property owners.
Building a nationwide system is now possible with new technology, experts say, but would require spending tens of millions of dollars annually and could take more than a decade to complete with the help of states and cities. So far, however, there has been little public outcry for faster, concerted action.
''No one has pushed it, and it hasn't been a priority,'' said Scott Burns, a geology professor at Portland State University. ''It's costly to monitor it, and we don't want to pay for it.''
He added, ''Now they're seeing these large disasters and saying this is important.''
The challenge, experts say, is that many landslides are inactive or cause consistent low-level damage, while big, destructive landslides happen only sporadically and don't cause the type of spectacular devastation hurricanes, earthquakes or tornadoes do so they often don't get the same attention or resources.
Despite this, landslides have exacted a toll in all 50 states, causing 25 to 50 deaths a year and up to $2 billion in losses annually. The last national map, which shows high landslide risk areas in the Appalachians, the Rockies and along the West Coast, was published in 1982, but it is outdated and lacks detail.
The lack of attention on landslides comes as experts say increasing numbers of people are moving farther out from cities and suburbs or onto previously uninhabited slopes within them and are more likely to come face to face not just with the views they sought but also with nature's destructive forces. Development on vulnerable land can disturb soil, put too much weight on slopes, or increase soil moisture, whether it is from runoff or a prolific sprinkler system.
