Termites eat wood, and can consequently cause great structural damage to your home if left unchecked. A typical homeowner's insurance policy does not cover destruction caused by termites, even though they cause over 1 billion dollars in damage to homes throughout the United States each year. Our inspection and treatment program can help you understand the threat of termites, and take the necessary steps to protect your home. Termite Inspection You cant assume your home is termite-free just because youve never seen them they only swarm once or twice a year, and you might miss it! We thoroughly inspect your home or business, looking for the tell-tale signs of termite infestation. Some of the things we look for are: Mud tubes built for traveling above ground Damaged or hollow-sounding wood Pinholes in drywall or wallpaper Small piles of sawdust Piles of small wings Other specific termite indicators In addition, we offer Real Estate transfer termite inspections. Termite Treatments To control these unwanted pests we provide an effective treatment plan, which may include: Exterior Protection - a continuous chemical barrier is created around the exterior of your home or building to keep termites from entering Direct Contact - as possible, we apply chemicals directly to the pests Insect Growth - we apply chemicals which duplicate the insect's natural hormones to disrupt their growth and development Termite Facts Subterranean termites are extremely destructive. First they build tunnels to wooden structures, and then they burrow into those structures to obtain food. Any wood or cellulose-containing material constitutes termite food, and given time to do so, theyll eat until nothing is left but a shell. Termites avoid light and air, so they build their colonies where youre not likely to stumble upon them.

Is it a termite or an ant? On the off chance you do see them, remember that its easy to confuse termites with ants. Fortunately, there are features that distinguish them.

    KNOW THE ENEMY: TERMITES

These home invaders actually serve a purpose in nature. They digest wood and other cellulose material, breaking down dead trees and vegetation.

There are three termite types to worry about in the United States. Knowing the types helps you know where to watch out for termite invaders.

This type builds its colonies underground. They need contact with soil to maintain their moisture levels. A regular source of moisture is critical to a subterranean colonys survival.

Subterranean termites are the most common type in the United States.

There are numerous species of subterranean termites one of the most aggressive and destructive species are Formosan termites. They can form a carton nest above ground, limiting their need for ground contact.

This type colonizes in wood above ground. Unlike subterranean termites, they dont need contact with soil to survive.

This type typically lives in damp and decaying wood. They require regular contact with water as well as a high humidity level to survive. Dampwood termites are the largest in size of the three types.

Termites are social insects and live in colonies with specific roles. There are workers, soldiers, reproductives and even queens.

As a colony matures, it may release winged males and females or swarmers. If they survive, swarmers will settle, shed their wings and form a new colony.

Termite Inspection – Reynolds Pest - August 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

To provide a termite inspection, the termite inspector must have at least an ID card issued from the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DACS). Aunit of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is the Bureau of Entomology and Pest Control. The Bureaus Pest Control Section regulates the activities and issues licenses to the pest management industry. Their authority is given through the Structural Pest Control Act, Chapter 482, Chapter 5E-14, Florida Administrative Code andFlorida Statutes and the Associated Rules of the Department. Termite inspection ID cards are issued to State Certified Operators that are licensed in the category of Termite and Other Wood Destroying Organisms, or licensed applicator/inspectors working under the State Certified Operators direction. These licensed applicator/inspectorsmust have additional training and sign an affidavit stating that they have had this training. Card holders are allowed to perform WDO inspections in Florida. Home Inspectors who do not possess one of these credentials may not perform a termite inspection Florida. Reynolds Pest Management, Inc. is properly licensed to do a termite inspection Florida (WDO reports).

Florida is a great place for termites to flourish so it is important to do a termite inspection regularly. So what does a termite inspection, and other Wood Destroying Organism consist of; First of all, consumers need to know what the major types of termites and what are other wood destroying organisms. Basically, there are three different types of termites that are in Florida, and within those types are different species. But, really all you basically need to know is that a termite inspector will be looking for evidence of following three types:

Subterranean termites are by far the most common termite found in Florida. Most subterranean termites live in the ground because they need an additional moisture source, and build mud tubes from the colony in to structures to find wood to consume. Since subterranean termites usually have a large colony when they invade a structure they usually cause damage pretty rapidly. Termite inspectors look for mud tubes, damaged wood, wings from swarmers to determine if you have subterranean termites. The good news is that this type of termite can be prevented.

Drywood termites obtain all the moisture they need from the wood itself. Therefore, prevention is difficult at best. Drywood termites are primarily found along coastal areas. Drywood termites swarm in the spring and summer months. They pair off and find a suitable wood source to start their colony. Unlike subterranean termites, drywood termites start as a pair and so the damage is slower since it takes time for the colony to grow. Inspectors look for termite pellets, damaged wood, wings from swarmers to determine if you have drywood termites. Wings are usually found on or along window sills and near other light sources and have a prism color like effect when looking at them

Dampwood termites as their name implies primarily live in dampwood. There are situations such as homes that are built on wood pilings that are in the water have needed treatment, but for most part the method of eliminating dampwood termites has been to get rid of the damp wood. Dampwood termites require a high moisture content in wood, so usually they are not a problem in structures. If they are, the damp wood situation needs to be corrected.

There are a variety of types of wood boring beetles that may infest seasoned wood in structure including furniture. Below are images of the major wood infesting beetles such as theAnobiid powderpost beetle, Bostrichid powderpost beetle, Lyctid Powderpost Beetles, Old House Borer, and other less common species.

We can handle all your inspections and treatments too when they are needed all in a timely and professional manner. We will do our part to help you close the deal.

We are so confident in the thoroughness of our real estate inspections that we offer a ONE-YEAR INSPECTION RESULTS GUARANTEE on qualifying homes. Go ahead, click on LEARN MORE, just above to read about this valuable offer.

Our first goal is always to seek understanding of the situation. We want to listen to your story and then we will want to do a thorough inspection of your entire home. Once we have our minds around the entire situation we then create a written and detailed treatment plan. From this plan we explain the process so that you may understand what will happen. Any questions or suggestions that you might have will be integrated into the solution so that the pest issue is solved in a manner that you are comfortable with.

Thorough inspection of your home is so critical that we must precede ant considered treatment with a comprehensive examination of all areas of your home. While you may have found termites in only one location, experience has taught us that we would be doing you a dis-service if we did not review the entire structure. Beyond looking for termites we are also interested in identifying any possible treatment challenges as well as any issues that might encourage wood pest infestation.

While there are many treatment options and even more opinions on which treatment to consider, we at Preventive Pest Control keep it pretty simple. Our standard offering for subterranean termite control is liquid soil treatments using non-repellant class termite control products. We have been using this class of material since 2000 and have had excellent results. We are successful due to the comprehensiveness of our initial inspection followed by our aggressive treatment tactics.

Through our years of experience we have run into some pretty common questions and have encountered some similar scenarios. We've been asked many different questions, below you will find the most commonly asked questions we encounter. To find a more comprehensive selection of questions please click the image above.

A Termite is defined as a small, pale soft-bodied insect that lives in large colonies with several different castes, typically within a mound of cemented earth. Many kinds feed on wood and can be highly destructive to trees and timber. The two types we encounter here are the subterranean termite and the drywood termite. The subterranean termite is the most common type and they live and breed in the soil. They are indigenous to New Mexico and enter your home via construction breaks and cracks. The drywood termite is less common and they live and breed in the wood they are infesting. They are not indigenous to New Mexico but have made their way here. Preventive Pest Control has expert knowledge on subterranean and drywood termites and is well-equipped to deal with both types.

Our success for termite control is 99% on the first attempt and 100% including all efforts. Sometimes it is hard to solve a termite issue, but if we follow all of the basic principles of scientific termite management it is an easy win.

L.A. ranked most termite-infested city in America - March 22, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Map courtesy of Terminix

Los Angeles is number one on yet another list, but is this one we should celebrate?

Terminix, a provider of termite and pest control services in the United States, released its annual ranking of the most termite-infested cities in the country. Cities in California and Texas dominated the list, earning six of the top 10 spots.

This announcement comes during the National Pest Management AssociationsTermite Awareness Week, March 15-21, during which the NPMA educates consumers on termite damage and pest prevention.

The 2015 list of most-infested cities include:

1.Los Angeles, Calif. 2.San Francisco, Calif. 3.Dallas-Forth Worth, Texas 4.San Diego, Calif. 5.Houston, Texas 6.Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 7.Phoenix, Ariz. 8.Atlanta, Ga. 9.Sacramento, Calif. 10. Oklahoma City, Okla. 11. Tampa-St. Petersburg, Fla. 12. Boston, Mass. 13. Washington, D.C. 14. Honolulu, Hawaii 15. Cincinnati, Ohio 16. Philadelphia, Penn. 17. Baton Rouge, La. 18. New York, N.Y. 19. Kansas City, Kan. 20. San Antonio, Texas

This list was created by compiling termite-specific inbound lead data from the more than 300 Terminix branches across the country. The rankings represent Metropolitan Statistical Areas with the highest volume of leads throughout 2014. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas-Forth Worth and Houston all moved up the list this year, previously holding spots two, eight, five and nine, respectively. San Diego, the previous leader, dropped three spots.

Termites thrive in warm, moist environments, making southern states like California, Texas and Florida the perfect environment for their destructive behavior, said Doug Webb, Terminix technical specialist and expert on wood-destroying insects. But living elsewhere doesnt mean youre safe. Termites are active in all 50 states except Alaska, and regularly cause thousands of dollars of uninsured damage across the country.

According to a recent study from Harris Interactive, the average damage caused by termite infestations is $8,184. Most of the time, this damage is not covered by homeowners insurance.
