Duke Energy receives backlash in Greensboro for its tree removal maintenance - May 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

GREENSBORO -- Backlash over Duke Energy's tree removal maintenance is back in Greensboro, after an incident Thursday morning in the Westerwood neighborhood. It's the same area of the city that spurred council members to pass an ordinance regulating the utility company's trimming last year.

The neighborhood has been preparing for its first Tour of Historic Homes and Gardens, put on by Preservation Greensboro.

"They're all uniquely different, very eclectic homes, built in the early 1900s, and everybody has been excited about this tour," said Gail Barger, a Westerwood homeowner who's helped plan the event.

Barger said the Clegg's home on Crestland Avenue was on the list for the tour.

"They have been working on this yard and this home for a year," said Barger.

On Thursday morning, Duke Energy crews were at the home to remove tree limbs around the power lines.

"She had specifically cautioned them about her shrubs, and they were trampled. At least two bushes were trampled," said Barger.

Davis Montgomery of Duke Energy said the company complied with the ordinance, putting out door hangers about the work seven days before it began. He said they were never asked to change their date, or told about the upcoming home tour, but Mayor Nancy Vaughan said, "I'm not sure I would agree with that just based on some conversations I've had with the city manager's office and what I believe was relayed to Duke Energy."

After Greensboro police were called to the home, Thursday morning, Duke Energy decided to postpone the work until after the tour event takes place. It's scheduled for May 17-18.

"I had hoped that Duke would be more sensitive to their costumers, to our customers," said Vaughan.

Bartlett Tree Experts: Tree Removal (Felling and Stump … - May 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tree removal is not a service we like to emphasize, but it is a very necessary part of arboriculture and one that Bartlett executes professionally and safely. Our goal is, and has always been, to provide services that keep trees healthy, but there are instances when removal is the best alternative for the landscape and homeowner.

Tree removals are performed to eliminate dead and dying trees as well as those that have become hazardous. Removals can also be useful in eliminating competition for light and space so that the remaining plants are better able to grow and thrive. In some cases, trees may also be removed to allow for new construction, home additions and to provide clearances with those structures.

Tree removal is the most hazardous aspect of arboriculture. Often, tree workers must remove trees growing in confined spaces near houses, utility lines and other sensitive areas. Tree removal requires considerable expertise to successfully perform this task.

At Bartlett Tree Experts, our arborists are highly trained to work safely and efficiently in all tree removals. We provide thorough clean up of debris and strive to minimize the impact to surrounding vegetation.

As part of the tree removal process, the stump will typically be left as close to the ground as possible. If needed, removal of the stump can be provided. Stump removal can be challenging and often special machinery is required, but it may be necessary if the stump is a hazard in the landscape or simply an eyesore. Stump grinding by a professional is the easiest and safest way to handle this work.

Old trees fall victim to 'plot' for million-dollar views - May 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Ascot homeowners are suspected of poisoning six 40-year-old eucalyptus trees to make way for multi-million dollar city views.

A Brisbane City Council investigation is underway to find the perpetrator, who could be fined up to $55,000 per tree if convicted.

However, aside from the potential for hefty fines, the environmental destruction on Crosby Road looks set to remain a successful one for the offender, with the council only able to replace the dead trees with saplings, which could take years to mature.

The council will also be left to bear the removal costs of up to $20,000.

Hamilton ward councillor David McLachlan said there had been a rapid decline in the health of the 20-metre trees over the past six weeks, much to the disappointment of many neighbouring residents.

"This is just pure, wanton vandalism to provide an economic benefit," he said.

"Any tree vandalism can only be condemned. There is no justification for people taking tree removal into their own hands."
