A stand of about 25 pine trees in Rainbow Point Reserve will be removed in a bid to ensure the safety of the community.
Taup District Councils Fences, Reserves and Dogs Committee made the decision to remove the trees at yesterdays meeting following safety concerns being raised by a neighbouring resident.
Council staff said the trees were alongside State Highway 1 and in poor condition. There was a lot of dead wood in their canopies and they deteriorated with every storm.
District manager of parks and open spaces John Ridd said if the trees were not removed, they could pose a risk to people and surrounding property. "A replanting programme can take place in autumn and winter once the trees are removed," he said. The cost of removal would be minimal as it would be offset by value of the wood that could be sold.
Two cypress trees that pose a risk to graves in Settlers Cemetery on Spa Road will also be removed. Mr Ridd told the committee the trees were planted after the construction of the cemetery and have no known historical significance.
"Its always a difficult balance between retaining trees and the potential hazards they can cause," he said. "In the case of Rainbow Point it is a matter of public safety and with the Settlers Cemetery trees, the cultural and historical significance of these graves is paramount."
Although the trees were healthy, as they grew they would affect the graves, Mr Ridd said.
Work on the trees was expected to be carried out within the next month.

NC Attorney General: Beware tree removal scams

Montvale's first tree ordinance, which the borough council was slated to adopt at its Feb. 11 council meeting, was tabled that evening to be further reviewed by professionals.
The ordinance, which was drafted by a committee that Councilwoman Leah LaMonica assembled last summer, proposes to prohibit clear-cutting in the borough by means of limiting the number of trees residents are allowed to cut down in certain residential zones. The proposed ordinance covers three zones - R-10, R-15 and R-40 - and residents are allowed to cut down three, four and five trees in those respective zones with a $35 permit. For any tree removed thereafter, residents would be given the option of replacing it or paying $500. A $2,000 fine is planned for violators of the law.
The governing body introduced the ordinance at its Jan. 14 meeting and then sent it to the Montvale Planning Board for review. At a recent planning board meeting, the board engaged in a thorough discussion of the ordinance, with most voicing concerns over the chosen zones, permits and fines. Planning Board Chairman John DePinto, who was present at Tuesday's council meeting, told the governing body his recommendations, which were outlined in the agenda packet. Among them was adding multi-family and commercial zones, one of which includes a heavily forested commercial property on Chestnut Ridge Road used for residential purposes.
Planning Board Planner Richard Preiss, who DePinto said has experience with tree ordinances, will review the proposed ordinance with other professionals and make recommendations to the planning board.
At the public hearing that evening, a few residents voiced their own concerns about the ordinance. John Worth, a resident who lives in a "heavily forested" property in the R-40 zone, said the proposed number of trees he would be allowed to cut from his property is "not a workable number."
"Someone like me is severely limited with five trees a year," he said, adding that he thinks the ordinance is "uncalled for" and "not necessary."
Kathy Cullen, another borough resident, was in favor of the ordinance. She said, however, that she did not like the fact that there is no mention of commercial properties in the ordinance. In regard to the tree removal aspect of the ordinance, which states that one must either pay $500 or replace a tree after exceeding the limit, she asked if the council would consider planting a different tree species in its place to enhance the beauty in the borough.
Robert Hanrahan, president of the tree ordinance committee who helped draft the ordinance, implored the council to include the opinions of residents along with the professionals when revising the draft.
LaMonica said the revised ordinance will be in the best interest of all the residents.
"There's work to be done in it," she said.

RALEIGH Snow and ice expected to fall on much of North Carolina could be followed by scammers seeking to take advantage of consumers who need help removing trees brought down by the storm, Attorney General Roy Cooper warned Wednesday.
Tree damage from ice storms brings out scammers trying to rip you off, said Cooper. After a bad storm, tree services will go door-to-door looking for customers. If you need help getting a fallen tree off your home or car, find someone qualified to do the work instead of falling for a scam.
While many tree removal companies are reputable, unscrupulous scammers often travel to areas that have been hit by natural disasters to take advantage of consumers. Consumers should report tree removal scams to local law enforcement and to the Attorney Generals Consumer Protection Division, Cooper said.
North Carolina residents can report scams and frauds to Coopers office by calling toll-free 1-877-5-NO-SCAM within the state or by filing a consumer complaint.
To avoid problems when hiring a tree removal service:
* Dont pay upfront. Be very wary of any request to pay deposits or other fees for tree work in advance. Out-of-state tree cutters have been known to collect deposits from entire neighborhoods and then disappear without performing any work. Only pay when the work is done and you are satisfied.
* Avoid fly-by-night companies. Tree services that knock on your door or that just arrived in town from another state may not stick around to finish the job. Choose local companies with good reputations for the best results.
* Check out the company. Contact our Consumer Protection Division and the Better Business Bureau to see if they have complaints against the company. Ask the company for local references, and look online for reviews of its work.
* Make sure the company is insured. If a tree removal service claims to have insurance, dont just take their word for it. Contact the insurer directly and ask them to send you a copy of the tree removal services certificate of insurance.
* Find out a fair price. Be skeptical of any price that seems unusually high or low. To find out the going rate for tree removal, get written estimates from more than one company. Check with friends whove had tree work done recently to see what they paid and who they would recommend.
