Elkhart airport undergoes tree removal for FAA compliance - May 4, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Elkhart Municipal Airport is getting a face lift of sorts now that Crossing Education Center Tree Team is removing almost 200 trees from the premises.

Students and staff of Crossing partnered with the City of Elkhart to cut down over 100 trees and about 90 tree stumps near runway 36. Elkhart contracted the Crossing team to complete the project in order to comply with new standards from the Federal Aviation Administration.

"Well, we got a call from the airport about a month ago and said hey the FAA is shutting down some of the directional lighting systems to one of our runways because of interference from trees and such. Would you guys come out and look at the trees and let us know that's a job you guys can tackle and we said absolutely," said Matt Hogarth, principal of Crossing Educational Center.

The Crossing team operates as a tree removal service run by staff and students from surrounding St. Joseph counties. Part of its job training program includes training Tree Team members for project such as this one.

The project has been underway for nearly three weeks and those working on it say it will be completed soon.

Massive tree removal may delay traffic - May 2, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

May 2, 2013 Massive tree removal may delay traffic

Anonymous Meadville Tribune The Meadville Tribune Thu May 02, 2013, 08:30 AM EDT

MEADVILLE Drivers traveling along Park Avenue between Willow and Linden streets may experience delays throughout the day today as the swamp white oak tree in front of Fullerton Appliance Center, 1196 Park Ave., is taken down.

The 51-inch-diameter tree, believed to have the largest diameter of any street tree in the City of Meadville, is being removed because of failing health, Rick Williams, the citys development manager, said Wednesday. Because the tree stands in the city right-of-way between the roadway and sidewalk, the city is responsible for its welfare.

Its declining badly, Williams said, noting that last year the decision was made to give it one more year and now its time is up.

The canopy is dying, Eric Proper of Hazlett Tree Service, who will be handling the removal, told the Tribune Thursday. Its started to drop limbs at various times the last couple of years and its a worry to the city.

Because the trees condition has been carefully monitored for a number of years, its replacement, an elm, was planted nearby about three years ago.

Hazlett will use a 23-ton crane to lower tree parts to the ground as theyre cut, according to Proper, who noted that work is expected to start around 7 a.m.

The trees age, which is believed to be between 100 and 150 years, will be revealed today when rings on its trunk can be counted.

Grand jury calls on Thousand Oaks to document oak tree removal - April 27, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Though Thousand Oaks requires property owners to replace oak trees when they are removed, the city has no such policy for its public projects, according to a Ventura County grand jury report.

Since 1989, the city has removed 128 oak trees the majority of them hundreds of years old but did not document the removal process, the report says.

The report is a result of grand jury interviews with City Hall staff members and research of city documents and newspaper articles.

Grand jury foreman Jay Whitney said he was surprised when he learned the city didnt document its tree removal process.

Its such a part of the community, and its so well-known. Oak trees are protected, said Whitney, a Thousand Oaks resident. Seems funny that was not codified in law.

The city has 60 days to respond to the grand jury report.

Asked whether the report contained inaccuracies, Community Development Director John Prescott said, Well be taking a look at that.

The city requires property owners to plant one or three trees in place of each oak tree removed. The requirement differs depending on whether the owner has private or commercial property and whether the tree is near an existing home.

Because oaks are not protected under state and federal law, Prescott considers the report unusual.

It seems sort of unusual to weigh in on what local development policy should be. Im assuming its within their purview, Prescott said. We are taking it seriously.

Northern Virginia Tree Removal company, JL Tree Service, Discusses Reasons Why Trees Go Into Decline - April 22, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Residential clients need to look at tree removal as the preferred option of removing dead trees that did not make it through the winter months.

Fairfax, VA (PRWEB) April 22, 2013

Oak, Locust, and Ash trees are two species in the Northern Virginia area that their leaves are some of the last to come out. Many other tree species canopies such as Maple, Poplar, and Dogwood trees will likely have already bloomed before Oak, Locust, or Ash trees. Naturally this is usually the case, however each tree is different based on where it is located. It is a possibility that if a tree is in decline, it could take longer to bloom than a healthy tree of the same species. Maple, Poplar, Redbud, Dogwood, and many other tree species native to the Fairfax Virginia area bloom the earliest. The warm weather causes flowers and leaves to bloom, so depending on how early or late in the season it heats up determines when the blooming will occur. Our famous Cherry trees in Washington DC are generally a good guide for when things buds start popping.

Spring is such a beautiful season that represents growth and life. It is such an amazing scene to view all the flowering trees and shrubs in full bloom. The sad part is when you look around your yard, and see that one tree or shrub has not made it, and it stands out like a sore thumb. A large brown spot in the yard is never a pretty scene. Especially when its a large old White Oak that has died from construction damage. Most of the time, a tree dies from issues in the root system. The problem is usually underground. Too much cutting in the CRZ (critical root zone) of a tree often leads to negative consequences. Sometimes it can take a long time for a tree to die, while others it can happen very quickly. Trees such as Maples are very hardy, and can live through many inadequacies. On the other hand, trees such as some species of Oak do not have the same tolerance to unfavorable conditions. For example, Red Oaks in our area have a common problem with root rot caused by droughts or dry spells. Fungus will grow from the ends of the root system back to the trunk. Many times, compacted soil does not allow oxygen to the root system, and other cases construction damage to roots cause a tree to decline or die.

Tree removal is a necessary option many times if a tree has experienced these kinds of issues and is dead or in decline. Hazardous trees should be taken down immediately so they don't cause further damage to people or structures. It is common that trees fall onto houses. Thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, high winds all can blow trees over, specially when trees have a full canopy after rainfall. Trees can topple over, especially ones with root or fungus issues. It is easy to discover if a tree needs to be looked at by a professional arborist. Any signs of issues with the leaves, bark, present decay, trees with a heavy lean towards a structure, dead limbs, etc are all occasions when a home owner should call in for a professional opinion.
