Redwood tree removal permit withdrawn - November 22, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The owner of the CitiBank building on the corner of California Avenue and El Camino Real has withdrawn his permit to have two mature redwoods cut down, Mike Sartor, City of Palo Alto public works director, said Tuesday.

The two stately, 2.5-foot-diameter trees are located near the parking lot behind Citibank, which sits on the south corner of El Camino Real and California Avenue. Notices appeared on Nov. 14 informing the public that the trees were scheduled to be taken down by the Public Works Department no sooner than Nov. 28.

The city issued the removal permit after learning that conditions met the Palo Alto tree ordinance. The trees and their roots had caused cracks in the building foundation and walls, had broken a water line, were lifting the public sidewalk, and were likely to make things worse as the trees continued to grow, city officials noted in a Nov. 15 press release.

The trees were to be replaced as part of an overall landscaping and parking reconfiguration for the site, city officials said.

A residents' group, Friends of California Avenue, sent a protest letter by email to city officials, which kicked into gear a requirement for the property owner to hold public-outreach meetings. The issue could have been heard before the City Council, Sartor said.

On Monday, Nov. 19, city officials met with the property owner and an engineer, Sartor said. After exploring their options, the owner indicated that a water line that was damaged by the trees' roots would be relocated, and a gas-service line would also be moved with assistance from the city, he said.

The owner will still need to get a street-work permit from the building department, he said.

Tree removal is a sensitive issue along California Avenue since more than 50 mature street trees were cut down in September 2009 in the retail district, with little warning to businesses and residents. Even though new trees were planned as replacements, public outrage ensued at the trees' sudden disappearance. City leaders vowed to institute policies that would prevent a repeat incident.

City officials rescinded the permit on Nov. 15 to allow staff to explore safety issues and alternatives to tree removal.

Two arrested at tree removal protest in Middletown - November 22, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MIDDLETOWN, DAUPHIN COUNTY

Last week, Middletown Borough officials voted to remove the trees on South Union Street between Emaus and Mill Streets. The vote came about after consultants told borough officials that Linden trees block store fronts and their roots have the potential to damage sidewalks.

"All we're hoping is that we could maybe delay cutting down the trees so that maybe we're allowed to give some of our input," said Sukle.

Chris Courogen, Middletown Borough's Director of Communications, says the Shade Tree Commission meeting was posted on Middletown's website.

"It's removing the trees now so that we could put the right trees in. It's so we can fix the downtown and revitalize the economy of the Borough of Middletown," said Courogen.

Sukle and her brother, David Graybill, was arrested around 4:30 p.m. during the protest. Sukle was charged with disorderly conduct and defiant trespass. Graybill was charged with inciting a riot and failure to disperse.

Both were warned by officers three times to disperse before they were taken into custody.

A YouTube video entitled "Save Our Trees 1" is circulating the internet and captures the protestors arrest.

2 people were arrested during tree removal in Middletown business district - November 22, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Two people, both part owners of the Middletown newspaper company Press And Journal Publications, were arrested during a demonstration during tree removal in the town's business district today.

According to The Press And Journal, Sukle was charged by Middletown police with disorderly conduct and defiant trespass. She had been chained to a tree. Graybill was charged with failure to disperse and inciting a riot.

Protesters this morning were holding signs saying 'Save Our Trees!' and distributing Middletown Borough Council members' contact information.

Borough secretary Chris Courogen, confronted by protesters downtown this morning, said the trees would be replaced in "less than a week" for a total cost of less than $800.

He said 5-foot-high Norway spruce, decorated for Christmas, will be put in temporarily. They won't be placed permanently in the ground.

A businessman, James Nardo, is donating the services to take down the trees, the secretary said. Nardo is a principal in the family-owned development company Abbco Real Properties Corp., which is developing the Westporte Centre, combining the vacant A.P. Green warehouse site on Ann Street with the former Middletown Plaza.

Tree removal, protest just the latest news in Middletown saga - November 22, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

You need to communicate with your people, then you dont end up with scenes of people chaining themselves."

Louise Sukle chained herself to a flowering pear tree outside the Press & Journal newspaper office on South Union Street in Middletown, where men with chainsaws began cutting down nearby trees Monday morning.

She stayed there, even after police warned her three times to move, and at 4:30 p.m., she was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and defiant trespass, according to her husband, Joe, who, with her, owns the newspaper. Her brother, David Graybill, was charged with inciting a riot and failure to disperse.

Monday was just another odd day in Middletown, where officials resign at a dizzying clip, council members are charged with felonies and council meetings spill out the door with residents shouting and crying over decisions.

The boroughs shade tree commission voted last week to remove the trees on South Union between Emaus and Mill streets, borough Secretary Chris Courogen said.

On Monday, residents saw Save Our Trees signs, yellow ribbons and demonstrators on South Union Street.

All these negative things are happening, and its pulling the town apart, resident Maxine Etter said. They have all this money for trees, but you dont have money for the library?

The borough should cut down one or two per year and plant trees gradually, she said.

Louise Sukle said it doesnt make sense for the borough to be replacing trees if its so financially strapped that it had to stop funding the library.

Where is the money coming from for this? Nothing in this makes sense, she said.
