The City of Morgan Hill is about to undergo a tree removal project that will significantly change the appearance of a southwest Morgan Hill park, according to city staff.
The city annually pays a professional arborist to evaluate trees in all city parks to ensure that they are healthy and safe for the public, reads a press release from Morgan Hill Communications Manager Maureen Tobin. The 2014 tree evaluation identified about 50 trees that need to be removed from city parks.
Most of the trees are scattered throughout the city, but about 20 are slated for removal from Paradise Park on LaCrosse Drive, city staff said. Removing these trees will create a very noticeable difference in park appearance.
Even though some of the trees remain in good health, city staff said the structure of the plants is unstable. Large branches could fall without notice, resulting major damage to surrounding property and threatening injury to people below the branches.
The work to remove the trees is scheduled for Jan. 19, to be completed by the citys contractor West Coast Arborists, city staff said. The removal of each tree will be posted for two weeks before their removal.
The removed trees will be turned into mulch and spread throughout the city, the press release said.
Anticipating the declining health of the Paradise Park trees in recent years due to the annual evaluations, the city began planting replacement trees two years ago in order to restore the park canopy, Tobin added.

After Tropical Storm Iselle brought down countless albizia trees in lower Puna last August, there was renewed focus on the dangers posed by the invasive species
Click here to watch Andrew Pereira's report.
Mei Kiese of Pacific Palisades said she began taking notice of the huge albizia tree in her neighbor's backyard about 15 years ago, long before Iselle struck the Big Island. Kiese said her neighbor refused to cut the tree down decades ago when it was still a sapling, and believes shes spent more than $24,000 trimming it back throughout the years.
When they building the house down there, this tree is below my fence and then we never can able to settle to cut (it down)," Kiese, who speaks broken English, told KITV4.
But as luck would have it, Kiese was eventually contacted by the state about her tree problem, which may result in the albizia being cut down.
Late last year the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, formerly known as State Civil Defense, came to Kiese's home to take a look at the situation and delivered some good news. Under a state law passed in 2009 that assesses potential hazards to public safety from trees, rocks and flood-prone streams, HEMA issued a $58,000 contract to have the albizia tree removed on Nov. 20. However, the contractor hired by the agency failed to cut down the tree before a large branch came down during a windstorm this past weekend and damaged Kiese's roof.
"It's driving me nuts," an exasperated Kiese said of the albizia tree. "I hope the state comes and takes care of it."
Last year, HEMA received $1 million from the state Legislature to fund the 2009 law known as Act 76, but nothing in the law says the state is now liable for damage done to Kiese's roof.
"The latest branch is as wide as my car, said Kiese. They hit the roof and broke my skylight."
HEMA spokeswoman Shelly Ichishita said the tree next to Kiese's property is still slated for removal, although she couldnt say when. Under the law, the state must provide at least 10 days notice before entering a property to remove a known hazard. If a homeowner refuses permission, the governor can obtain a court order to gain entry. The governor can also bill the property owner for all costs associated with the removal of the hazard and place a lien on the landowners property.

The winter weather has delayed tree removal in Iowa City.
The Park Road closure will be postponed one week and will now occur on Monday, January 12th and on Wednesday, January 14th.
Park Road will be closed to traffic from Lexington Avenue to Magowan Avenue.
A detour route will be posted and traffic will be directed onto River Street and Riverside Drive. This closure is necessary to accommodate the safe removal of trees located along Park Road in the area and will occur between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. each day. The closure is weather dependent.
Drivers are asked to take another alternate route during this time period. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling in all construction areas.

CARY During the course of the winter, workers from Trees R Us Inc. will be going through town. In the course of several minutes, the workers apply a saw toward the bottom of an ash tree to bring it down.
The logs are hauled away and some of the limbs are put through a wood chipper and turned into mulch.
The scene will repeat itself over and over in Cary as the village removes the remaining 1,800 ash trees in town to combat the infection of emerald ash borer.
Like every other town out there, our ash trees are in decline, Public Works Director Erik Morimoto said.
The village was able to get favorable per unit cost for tree removal, Morimoto said.
The contractor is expected to work through the winter and be done by the spring. As trees come down, the villages public works crews remove the stumps and prepare each tree site for landscaping.
Over the next six to seven years the village plans to replace the trees as budget funding allows, Morimoto said.
We dont want to get into a bind when whatever diseases or insects come along, Morimoto said. We want to encourage a [diversity] of trees to try to get a balance.
Morimoto said the village will be thoughtful in how it replaces trees, such as how they are spaced to make sure the trees will thrive. The intent is to replace as many as possible.
In the 1980s and 1990s, ash trees were very popular with developers. The invasive insect eventually migrated to the country and worked its way to the midwest.
