More hotels are going green and not just to save water or money - November 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LOS ANGELES In the hotel industry, being green sometimes means ripping out the greenery.

The Intercontinental Los Angeles Century City Hotel is removing draping ivy plants from the balconies of all 361 rooms, replacing them with drought-tolerant succulents.

The Courtyard by Marriott in nearby Torrance tore out 900 square feet of turf and flower beds, swapping them for native California grass to help cut water use by 15 percent.

Some hotels have gone beyond simply installing low-flow shower heads and urging guests to reuse towels. The goal is not just to save water or money. Its about creating an eco-friendly image to appeal to environmentally minded guests.

Its not a huge savings, Steve Choe, general manager of the Intercontinental, said about dumping the ivy planters. I think its about sending the right message.

Nearly 60 percent of travelers say they plan to make eco-friendly choices when booking hotels, with half saying they would pay extra to stay at an environmentally friendly hotel, according to a 2012 survey by the travel website TripAdvisor.

An Earth-friendly image is also important because many corporate travel managers insist that their workers stay at hotels that do their part to improve the environment.

The percentage of companies with travel booking policies that either require or recommend that a hotel adopt sustainability measures has jumped to 19 percent in the U.S., up from 11 percent in 2011, according to a new study by the Global Business Travel Association, the trade group for the worlds business-travel managers.

The best thing hotels can do is say, Look at what we are doing to help the environment, said Patricia Griffin, founder of the Green Hotels Association, a Houston-based group that promotes green policies for hotels.

Arts Feature: A crash course in UC Daviss sculptures - November 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

On the UC Davis campus, public art is more than just a part of the scenery. Art unifies the campus, inspires myth among the student body and is the result of some very rich history.

The majority of the campus sculptures are a result of an art-in-public-places campaign by the Nelson Gallery Price Amerson and the UC Davis Fine Arts Collection.

In Davis, students and community are connected to our arts, which is unique for a college campus, said Rachel Teagle, director of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art.

The pieces are the result of the many talented artists who have passed through our university over the years, and their diverse styles match Daviss quirky atmosphere.

In selecting pieces, we consider what is appropriate to our audience. We pick pieces that reflect our history. said Teagle.

In addition to staying true to the campus history, the art is also selected to spark conversation and sometimes, debate.

If nobody is talking about it, its probably a [poor] work of art, Teagle said.

Here is an overview of some of the campus most interesting sculptures:

DUAC for sprucing up South Delhi neighbourhood - November 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The affluent and cosmopolitan neighbourhood of South Delhi - Chittaranjan Park, Kalkaji DDA flats and Alaknanda - might soon be upgraded in social and physical infrastructure with a better planning process.

In order to upgrade urban environment and social infrastructure based on policy of urban renewal, the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) has conducted a detailed study of ward 190, which includes the three areas, and found the need for bridging the disconnect between the Zonal Plan and Local Area Plan.

Ward 190 is surrounded by a mixed urban fabric such as Kalkaji, Greater Kailash and Nehru Place; unplanned areas such as Govindpuri; and green areas like Jahapanah forest. The land use as per the Master Plan 2021 is residential.

In its site-specific ward design study, the commission has found that the major issues faced by the residents of the ward relate to transportation, parking, urban design, parks, stormwater and solid-waste management under the Local Area Plan.

The study analysed each of these issues and made recommendations for urban renewal of the area.

The ward, the DUAC said, lacks healthcare facilities and AIIMS is the nearest hospital. There is lack of basic amenities like drinking water and public toilets.

Lack of lane division for motorised and non-motorised vehicles and inadequate footpaths were noticed in the ward.

Absence of facilities for the differently-abled and senior citizens, no dedicated lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, no signage and streetlights, and grating at the base of trees were some negatives. Absence of organised hoardings and dirty back lanes of the houses and absence of dustbins at regular intervals were some of the issues taken up in the study.

The DUAC also found the Right of Way (ROW) designated in the Master Plan not available on site and was either encroached upon due to vehicular parking, by street hawkers or by rampant construction leading to traffic congestion during peak hours.

The DUAC recommended clearing of all encroachments, proper lanes for motorised and non-motorised vehicles, well-designed footpaths keeping in mind the needs of the disabled and the elderly, a dedicated lane for cyclists, proper signage, and segregated waste bins at regular intervals.
