Katzer got into the business when he was about 16 because he needed work and a friends father owned a window washing company. And today, roughly 30 years later, its still what he does for aliving.

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

It's a job that starts 85 feet in the air.

"Check that everything is locked, safety's on, pins, pins, pins. And you go over," Matt Donahue said.

Donahue has no problem rappelling off the roof of the National Life Building in Montpelier.

"And you descend down," he said.

He's a high-rise window washer. In fact, he and his wife run the family business. It's an idea Donahue got from his dad.

"He figured out that he could make as much money with a $20 squeegee, than he could with a $20,000 backhoe," Donahue said.

He grew up learning the business.

"When I was 14 years old I did my first drop at the McClure building at Fletcher Allen when it was new," he said. "And every summer since then, I've been washing windows."

In 1995, he started Donahue Window Cleaning. He only had four contracts that year. Now he has 88 clients and got so busy he had to quit being a Montpelier volunteer firefighter.

The top five largest single occupational groupings include 1.1 million sales and retail assistants, 600,000 cleaners and domestics and 450,000 kitchen and catering assistants, said the Jobs Economist consultancy.

The three occupations which have expanded most over the past three years are taxation experts (up 88 per cent to 34,000), advertising accounts managers and creative directors (up 75 per cent to 33,000) and window cleaners (up 73 per cent, to 47,000).

The occupations which have contracted most over the past three years are debt, rent and other cash collectors (down 52 per cent to 20,000), TV, video and audio engineers (down 46 per cent to 6,000) and insurance underwriters (down 45 per cent to 20,000).

Dr John Philpott, director of the Jobs Economist, said: "It's clear that so-called 'knowledge work' is firmly on the rise, requiring a high level of professional and technical skill and offering decent pay prospects.

"Yet equally apparent is a substantial bedrock of low-skill, low-wage service work which accounts for the UK's relatively high incidence of low pay, with around one in five employees earning less than the commonly used low pay threshold for developed economies.

"While with considerable justification we like to portray ourselves as a nation of increasingly better educated and skilled professionals, we could also reasonably be described as a nation of shop assistants, cleaners and restaurant or cafe washer-uppers."

The owners of a sushi restaurant on Academy Road are cleaning up after a car crashed through their front window this afternoon.

At about noon, Sushi Kudaras owner, Kyung Jae Lee, had just finished cleaning some tables and made a visit to the washroom when she heard the crash. "Very scared, very surprised," she said of the scene when she emerged.

Witnesses said a woman was trying to park in front of the restaurant when her brakes failed and smashed through the cafs picture window.

The driver, believed to be in her 50s, was not injured.
